## Tl;dr:
Darcel grew up rich and studied history, like his father Krado, who owns the museum in Viroleda.
With his friends, he explored the mountains and found a passage to old tombs owned by the Lightsear Temple and his friends stole artifacts and sold them to the museum.
Krado, not knowing who the members of the gorup were, ensured that they got caught by the temple guards. Some lost their lives in the encounter and Darcel was imprisoned by the temple along with two of his companions.
Upon discovering the identity of the tomb raiders, Krado disowned his son, but negotiated with the temple and got his sentence reduced to 7 years of servitude. Darcel's remaining friends were hanged.
Darcel spent years doing menial labour, but would slowly come to accept his life in servitude to the gods and started planning for a life in the temple.
One night, Darcel came to the aid of a temple guard, who was in combat with multiple would-be grave robbers.
Together, they emerged victorious and upon the request of the guards, Darcel was transferred into their ranks. Here he would develop his survival and combat skills and learn to fight effectively in the dark.
When his 7 years of servitude were up, Darcel was conflicted on wether he should join the temple or stay with the guards, so he decided that he needed to see the world and gain some experience and wisdom, before such a decision could be made.
Darcel travelled North along the coast, from city to city, doing various work, until he ran into a Dragonborn fighter named Zovoloze Brightclaw. The two would form a semi-official partnership, offering their protection services to the highest bidder.
## Upbringing
Growing up in [Viroleda](/B3hHeYCQSweU2YTLysmR6Q), as a member of a [wealthy family](/uckfkD3pQPGeRnG1aKZFlg), Darcel was a spoiled and nerdy kid, spending most of his freetime in the Viroleda History Museum, owned and curated by his father, Krado.
Darcel would follow in his father's footsteps and go on to study history and archaeology.
In his late teens, he would work at various archaeological digs in the [Dragonbane Mountains](/Ie0vj2JPTiGaGyYIC4hzjQ), but would prefer to go exploring abandoned mines and natural caverns in the region.
## Underground adventures
During one of his spelunking journeys near the border between the minable mountains in the west and the hallowed grounds of the [Lightsear Temple](/WI8Td4u5TtyxmKA1ESiwLA) in the south, Darcel came across a group of likeminded explorers.
They teamed up for multiple journeys, referring to their group as "The Tunnel Rats", but quickly shortened to simply "The Rats".
While Darcel came from money, the rest of the members were mostly delinquent youths from poor families.
From his grandfather, Sarek, the current head of the [South-West Dragonbane Mining Company](/7wc5p_InRiWIZ8PL8-Jspg), Darcel had learned about mines that intersected with the old catacombs in the South, so using this knowledge, The Rats decided to go searching for these hidden passageways to the tombs, well-aware of the severity of the crime of trespassing on hallowed grounds.
## Into the tombs
The tombs were famed across much of the world, for holding some of the highest nobility and royalty, who would pay incredible sums of money to the [Lightsear Temple](/WI8Td4u5TtyxmKA1ESiwLA) for an opportunity to be "burried with a view", inside the tall mountains.
Due to the notoriety and vast treasures, burried with former kings and queens, the entrances to the catacombs were heavily guarded and the guards were known and encouraged to ruthlessly cut down any tresspasser. Should anyone be captured alive, conviction of grave robbery came with the penalty of death.
As it was only the known entrances to the south that were guarded, The Rats could largely come and go as they pleased in the old tombs and it wasn't long until the museum would get offers to purchase old artifacts "discovered in the mountains" from unknown young adventurers.
During an exhibit, a nobleman from Goldkeep recognised an artifact as grave goods belonging to one a member of their royal house, who was entombed by The Lightsear Temple. Krado initiated an investigation in cooporation with the temple.
