#### EDI discussion [00:05 - 00:55]
*We will use the [1-2-4-all strategy](https://www.liberatingstructures.com/1-1-2-4-all/).*
##### 1: Quiet reflection [7 min]
*Instructions*
* Please submit written reflections here:
*Prompts*
* Who is not included in the work you do?
* Can you think of any obvious or hidden biases at your current institution.
* What could contribute to this exclusion?
* What do you wish you'd see in your project/institution to improve inclusion?
*Notes*
* I think the selection processes I've been involved with lately lack some affirmative actions. They **try to mitigate the exclusion built within academia with "blind" evaluations, but it can't, because the original pool is already TOO biased.**
* Lack of **bibliodiversity**
* Lack of **language diversity**
* OMG **neurodiversity** is SO neglected!
* One thing that might be contributing to biases is how things are **structured to not allow a diverse pool of people in positions of power. Why can't an ECR be president or vice-president of an academic society?**
* Academia is a difficult environment to everyone, especially when you are starting. Everyone seems so smart and you think you're not good enough... It's hard to contribute when you don't see yourself as having **"learner safety" (from Mitacs course)**. I think we lack more sincere people who will say that they also have doubts and don't know everything... at least that's what I plan to do as new lab members come in.
* There are many barriers to entry in the academic world, some of them including needing research experience to begin graduate school, many students do not have the opportunities to volunteer or work doing research in the summer because they have need work during school -- **expectations of unpaid labour in order to advance**
* English-speaking institutions (so most academic institutions) can be **biased towards native-English speakers** when questions about word choice come up. Too much of a focus on little details can make folks who are still learning subtleties of the language feel unwelcome.
* There is a **lack of resources for indigenous students**
* Science and the **scientific process is very westernized/elitist**, do not take other forms of knowledge seriously
* it feels like a lot of EDI/inclusivity language is still framed in a colonial context, which almost negates the goals of the efforts. **EDI goals are still framed to reflect the potential benefits to the majority**. We need to "flip the script" to reprioritize benefits to marginalized peoples (with benefits to the majority being a nice bonus)
* I use herbarium specimen and some should maybe be reconnected with the communities from where they came from. Asking for permission to use and properly record information and, with their permission, credit these communities.
* Much fieldwork and in-lab research **limits accessibilty to those with physical barriers**
* A culture of **“paying your dues” through unpaid internships** - just one of many financial barriers for low income students — assumptions of family wealth
* **Biases against non-western knowledge systems**/ignoring valuable potential research collaborators for a lack of formal education
##### 2: Small group discussion [10 min]
*Instructions*
* Go back to your written reflections, share your ideas with each other & build on them
* What are the main points of similarity or differences in your views?
* Discussion points should be captured here
*Notes and insights from discussion*
* Teaching biases/ biases in material that are taught
* Language will always be an issue/consideration especially as Canada does have two official languages and how to accomodate that
* Language as a barrier for getting accepted into journals/ people citing your work
* 'Onboarding' for foreign students/faculty esp regarding the history
* Firmer requirements for being in active contact/collaboration with the indigenous peoples on whose land research/education is being conducted
* Encourage and facilitate [mentorship](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02617-1)
* Socioeconomic background is often a barrier to entry for getting into grad school: If people have to work in undergrad they don't have time to volunteer at a lab to get research experience.
* Thinking actively about the system of values *you* have and want to see around you.
* Cool book mentioned: [Lessons from plants by Beronda L. Montgomery](https://www.amazon.ca/Lessons-Plants-Beronda-L-Montgomery/dp/0674241282/ref=asc_df_0674241282/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=459414844455&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=439576262097519820&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000386&hvtargid=pla-982058745558&psc=1)
* Westernized ideas of science and how it should be conducted
##### 4: larger group discussions [20 min]
*Instructions*
* Two of the previous breakout rooms joined to form one with >4 people, 15 mins + 5mins for documenting feedback
* Larger groups refine ideas, expand them, challenge them, and agree on a set to share with the whole workshop
* Points should be captured in the document under the ‘notes’ section
*Additional prompts*
* __Based on the training, your own experience and the discussions you just had - what is LDP doing right in terms of EDI, and what should we change?__
* What are the actions that can be taken, based on what you've discussed?
* What next steps can you take to learn more about EDI and embracing diversity?
* How will you accommodate EDI in your project? (DRI or thesis or other)
* What behaviours can you work on to be more inclusive?
*Notes and insights from discussion*
##### ALL: everyone joins together for the final discussion [13 min]
* Share the points you’ve discussed in your group
* Points should be captured in the reflections document
* May want to identify a dedicated notetaker from each group for this part
*Notes and insights from discussion*
* interesting to compare/contrast the path of reconciliation between different colonial states (Canada vs. South Africa)
* SA seems to prioritize actually policies that will affect change rather than Canada's approach which seems to be more suggestive/nice-to-have
* How does Canada make active change?
* DRInterns should be encouraged to seek out more information on the history and location of the data they're with. Who are the relevant Indigenous communities? What is the history of the land?
* Can we have each intern draft a land acknowledgement for the data they're rescuing?
* LDP doesn't seem to be engaging with Indigenous students and scholars. How can we improve this?
* One way would be to broaden the reach to more institutions that may have more diverse
* It takes a lot of institutional effort - active search for these students.
#### Final considerations [00:55 - 01:00]
* For the next cohort call (09 August), please complete one additional Mitacs course:
* See the [list of courses](https://www.mitacs.ca/en/programs/training/training-courses)
* Networking skills; Project and time management; Communication skils; Career planning; R&D management; Leadership skills; Writing and presentation skills
* Prepare a __short__ presentation (~5 slides) to spotlight the work that you've done (or are currently doing) during your internship. This should include some brief background information on the project, main goals, central work, main accomplishments. Come prepared and enthused to share with the group!
* In this presentation, you should include 1 slide that highlights the second Mitacs course you took and a few key take-away points

#### Hell-yeah / hell-no moment! [00:11 - 00:20]
_Share with us your story of failure and success this week in your internship. Add your name near a problem to help solving it this month_
* Joey - our [data rescue paper](https://ecoevorxiv.org/ra6ze) (first from LDP) was just accepted; annoyed/confused by [impending changes to mapping functionality in R](https://r-spatial.org/r/2022/04/12/evolution.html), though the [`tidyterra` package](https://dieghernan.github.io/tidyterra/) may resolve any major issues
* Mike - fighting with ArcGIS / ArcMap projects. Finally have data from a data partner. :p
* Charlotte - no story to share because I've just started, but I am determined to write tidier R scripts during this internship (and use pipes).
* Jory - figured out how to impute missing data using a random forest model / didnt work very well, now trying to gap fill using dynamic regression models but just started this morning so haven't made it work yet (how do you do SARIMA???)
* Tanya - Hell no: dates... they are literally the worst. Hell yeah: Managing to extract characters with regex (and somewhat understand how I got it to work)
* Ashton - Hell yeah: Figured out how to split degrees minutes seconds into their constituent parts with regex, then convert to decimal degrees.. Hell no: continually forgetting to check and harmonize classes when merging tables/dataframes :-(
* Fiel - Hell no: Time series are difficult to work with in ggplot. Hell yes: Figured out how to correctly order the dates.
* Janaina - Hell no: hard to communicate with prof - maybe my idea of starting things in person delayed everything; Hell yes: maybe a cool collaboration will happen
*
