# User Study Instructions

## User Study overview

Thank you for participating in this user study. The goal of this study is to measure the timing of your eye movments for a variety of visual tasks. The trials are split into $4$ blocks. Each block of trials will have different instructions so I will describe the task prior to each block and run a short mock block to learn the task flow. The user study will last approximately one and a half hours.

## Shared Preamble

In this task, you are asked to discern a target stimulus from a non-target stimulus. Once a trial begins, you will first see a green crosshair at the center of the screen. Please look at the crosshair until additional stimuli appear in your field of view -- the task proper commences as soon as the stimuli appear.

## Object Identification Task

For this block there are a total of ~150 trials.

At first you will see an image with a number of objects / characters. Please maintain your gaze at the green crosshair during this phase. After a 1-1.5 second delay, an additional object / character will appear in your field of view. This object will be either the target or non-target. I will show you what the target and non-target object / characters are.

If the object / character is a target, please quickly move your gaze to it. Once the system recognizes that you've successfully done so, you will see a green flash to signal success. If you made an error, you will instead see a red flash. If the object / character is a non-target, please press the space bar without moving your gaze. You will likewise receive feedback on the correct label of the object / character.

## Gabor Orientation Task

For this block there are a total of ~250 trials.

There will appear 2 grated patterns on your left and right periphery, as well as a third one to replace the green crosshair. Your task is to identify the orientation of the grated pattern at the center of your vision and move your gaze quickly to either of the two grated patterns in your peripheries that have the same orientation as the central grated pattern. You will see a green or red flash for feedback right after each trial.

## Shared Notes

If at any point during a trial you blink, or the gaze tracker input becomes invalid due to eye tracker issues, you will see a yellow flash. You may proceed forward if you observe this, but if this issue keeps repeating please let me know and we can address the issue.

After every 15 trials, the system will pause giving you an opportunity to take a short 10-30 second break if you'd like. Otherwise feel free to press the space bar to resume the trials once ready.
