## **!! this page is in the process of being adapted !!** Gavin & Pan are experimenting with hosting sessions that optimize for valuable, meaningful engagement from a diverse set of participant so that these sessions can be hosted with minimal overhead. Ideally the people who join will get a high amount of value for their time, will find points of connection, and will be inspired to host a future session and/or take something to the next level. ## Session Format The host breaks the topic into sections. For each section, host(s) give a brief intro and then invites questions. We swiftly move on to the next question and topic sections so that we can save lengthy discussions for after the session. Sessions are totally optional! There’s never any pressure to attend or stay—only stay if you are getting value. ## Preparing for the session - **know a bit about what people care about** to have an engaging session, based on conversations (prev sessions, Discord chats, newsworthy event, etc) - **pick a topic** that you think will benefit everyone to explore *together* (you don’t have to be an expert to learn with our community!) - **make a one-pager** with HackMD for people to see what the session will be about and to follow along ([example page here](../%E2%80%9CWeb3%20Surfacing%E2%80%9D%20sessions%2097865405b74546e387eccfe3d5a1f3d4.md)) - break your topic up into sections and have at least one engaging question for each section - use this only as a guide—sessions could deviate based on meaningful engagement - **TO DO:** how to add your session to schedule? # !! nothing beyond this point had been adapted yet !! ## Scheduling & advertising the session **Scheduling** —> enagage with Pan & Winfred in (channel) for help with scheduling. Heliax team could potential endorse/promote via Discord, Twitter, mailing list. - I used this description for the calendar invite: Crypto a is weird and wonderful place. If you feel like an imposter or just in over your head, that's okay. We all do. So each week (typically Friday) we chat together about an important Web3 topic. **This week's topic will be about writing. If writing is unappealing, this session is for you. It's time to unlearn what you think you know about writing.** [Preview here](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://docs.google.com/document/d/17hsJ9wsZoXkFncs1JmOyoSmD9HVN7LgXGe4U2KovkR0/edit?usp%3Dsharing&sa=D&source=calendar&ust=1652897447530122&usg=AOvVaw1H4GkYqSIx97zFQD0-6aUG) **In the meantime you can either DM/email Gavin or start a thread in #protocol-chatter with Qs & ideas in Slack. [Previous & future sessions can be found here in Notion.](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.notion.so/figmentnetworks/Web3-Surfacing-sessions-97865405b74546e387eccfe3d5a1f3d4&sa=D&source=calendar&ust=1652897447530122&usg=AOvVaw3Ap07oOkr9-4wCDwVVcGaD)** **There's no obligation to attend! We will record each session and post it in the #team-random Slack channel.** Format I'll break the topic into sections. For each section, I'll give a brief intro and then invite questions. We'll swiftly move on to the next question and topic sections so that we can save lengthy discussions for after the call. - **Slack post** examples (I’ve posted in #team-random and #protocol-chatter) [Example 1](https://figment-work.slack.com/archives/C01J26LJCGJ/p1652457302181669): Hey all! in 5 mins we'll be starting this week's Web3 Surfacing session: What’s our responsibility? We're a big staking service, and crypto is getting closer to being mainstream. Besides making blocks, what’s our responsibility in Web3? Here's the 1-page preview There's no obligation to attend! We will record each session and post it in the #team-random Slack channel. Feel free to come and go throughout the 45 min session. [Example 2](https://figment-work.slack.com/archives/C01J26LJCGJ/p1650591966666389): Hey all! Tomorrow's Web3 Surfacing session is DeFi: Yield opp or Ponzi scheme? DeFi products/apps tempt us with promises of sizeable returns. How do we know what’s legit? (One-pager preview) The session is optional, so feel free to come and go as you see fit. The session will be recorded :slightly_smiling_face: Feel free to drop Qs as replies in this thread ahead of the session. Last week's session can be found here in Notion. - it could be cool to try bringing in externals, like customers, partners, friends ## Running the session - hit the record button! 🚨 - remind people that it’s optional to attend and will be recorded; invite others to host a session in future - remind people of the format (particularly that we want to move along swiftly, so no lectures or prolonged discourse from one person) - prioritize new voices - @Gavin Birch found this most challenging and in need of optimization - Experiment! here’s @Gavin Birch’s recommended process: - short topic intro, then a question or two to begin engagement in each topic section - a “win” is when we naturally cover much of the topic section material organically together from the question - another win is when you unexpectedly learn something important - another win is when you have a new question that deserves further exploration - short summary sentence that leads to next topic question - open Q&A - at the end, encourage participants to message each other to continue their points of interest afterwards ## After the session - DM contributors about points of interest; thank them for contributions - update [the Notion page](../%E2%80%9CWeb3%20Surfacing%E2%80%9D%20sessions%2097865405b74546e387eccfe3d5a1f3d4.md) with links; add pointers to this playbook - make a Slack post and share links to both the recording and the chat log ([also the link to Notion](../%E2%80%9CWeb3%20Surfacing%E2%80%9D%20sessions%2097865405b74546e387eccfe3d5a1f3d4.md)) - toggle to see an example [Example](https://figment-work.slack.com/archives/C01J26LJCGJ/p1650656757665679): I'm really grateful to have gotten together for our "Web3 Surfacing" session on DeFi! Questions in an email that @Karn sent me last week inspired this one, thank you. Shout-outs to x, y, z, everyone in the Auditorium chat, everyone has who has DMed me :raised_hands::blush: Here's the recording (45m session plus 15m open chat) All past & future sessions will be found here in Notion. It feels like the evolving format is improving our engagement--more "real talk" (and ideally not too abstract or conceptual). One theme that really stuck out to me is how we might go about judging a DeFi opportunity by the likelihood of the protocol (and value of its token) being sustainable, so hopefully you'll find those tips useful. Crypto a is weird and wonderful place. If you feel like an imposter or just in over your head, that's okay. We all do. So each week (typically Friday) we chat together about an important Web3 topic. Let me know if you have thoughts, questions, and/or are interested in co-hosting :) - Optional: write an article! tweet important discoveries! keep the convos going with the people you
