# 1888(588)8639 Google & Gmail 2 Step Verification Process Guideline 2023
## Google 2 Step Verification Process
The difference between two-step verification and two-factor authentication:
Two-step verification is sometimes confused with two-factor authentication (2FA), which also involves two generally sequential methods used for verification. However, in contrast to 2FA processes, the methods in two-step verification can belong to the same category of authentication factors, and the methods used for 2FA are not necessarily sequential.
## Google 2 Step Verification Process
Also, verification and authentication are not entirely synonymous. Verification can be part of a real-world process, providing a driver’s license as proof of identity, for example. Authentication is considered an adaptation of verification processes designed to protect automated and online systems.
However, many two-step verification products and services are also examples of two-factor authentication. Google’s two-step verification service, for example, involves the usual password (something the user knows) and a code sent to the user’s device (something the user has). Most other current web-based user authentication systems described as two-step verification also qualify as two-factor authentication.
* Two-step authentication adds another layer of security to prevent unauthorized access to an individual’s email account. To configure two-step authentication, see the following:
* Visit Google 2-Step Verification
* Click on “Start”
* Click on “Start”
* Sign in to your Gmail account
* Click to activate two-step verification and enter a phone number in the “Voice or text message” option. This number will be used to receive a numeric code from Gmail, which is necessary to authorize access to Outreach or other third-party applications that may be used in the future.
* Click ‘Submit Code’
* Enter the verification code sent from Google and click ‘Done’
* Check ‘Trust this computer’ if the user is on a trusted computer and click ‘Next’
* Click ‘Confirm’ to activate two-step verification.

### What is two-step verification?
Two-step verification is an additional security measure on your Google account. In addition to your password, you will also need a unique code to log into your account.
### How does it work?
Signing for the first time will work a little differently. As you currently do, you will log into Google with your username, username@selu.edu, and enter your password. Then, a code will be sent to your mobile phone by text message, voice, or the Gmail application. Once you enter the code, you will be able to complete the login process.
### Will I have to enter a code every time I log in?
No, with the option “Don’t ask me again on this computer”, you will not be asked for a verification code every time; only occasionally. However, if you erase your browsing history or use a new browser on your computer, it will prompt you to enter a verification code. Then a new code will be sent to your mobile phone by text message, voice, or the Gmail application.
### Why do we need it?
There are many ways that attackers can steal your password. Using the same password on multiple sites, phishing and malware attacks are just a few. With two-step verification, the attacker would also need their one-time code, which is much more difficult to obtain since the code is only sent to their mobile phone. While two-step verification will protect your Southeast Google account today, it will soon protect other systems like Moodle and Workday as well.
### Sounds great. How do I enable two-step verification?
* Just visit https://myaccount.google.com/security and log in with your account firstname.lastname@selu.edu. Click 2-Step Verification and follow the instructions.
### What should I choose for the second step?
We recommend one of the three options below:
* If you already use the Gmail app on your iOS or Android phone, choose Google Prompt. When you log in, the Gmail app on your phone will display a message, and just tap Yes. This option is simpler since you don’t need to enter a 6-digit code.
* If you don’t use apps on your phone, choose a text message. You will receive a 6 digit verification code by text message.
* If your phone does not support SMS, choose a voice message. You will receive 6-digit verification through an automated phone call.
### What happens if I lose or break my phone?
In addition to your phone, you can set up alternative second steps that you can use in case you lose your phone. It is recommended to configure alternative steps.
* Add a step for the voice message and use the phone number of your Southeast office.
* Use backup codes. You will see 10 single-use codes. Print the codes and keep them in a safe place, such as in your wallet/purse or in your desk drawer.
* We recommend configuring the two previous options. If you later lose your phone, you can receive a verification code on your office phone or use one of the backup codes to return it to your account. If none of the alternative options are available.
### Is this mandatory for everyone in Southeastern?
It is highly recommended for all students and mandatory for employees. It was implemented for administrative units in the fall of 2019 and will be implemented for all academic units in the spring of 2020. An implementation schedule has been published. Please note that the implementation schedule may be subject to change.
When two-step verification is implemented for your department on schedule, you will have 2 weeks to enroll. Every time you log in, you will see a reminder to sign up on the specified date. After that date, you won’t be able to sign in to your Google account if you haven’t signed up for 2-Step.
