# Self-Evaluation of Performance 2019–10 to 2021–03 ## Overall - My employment is 100 % of full time. Please list your highest academic degrees (bachelor, master, doctorate) and when it was awarded. Indicate if you are a docent or professor (or have applied to be assessed as such). - Doctorate, 2018. 1.1 My ability to achieve good, high-quality results is good Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: inadequate, adequate, satisfactory, good, very good, or excellent. Prioritize and limit work according to operational needs. - **Satisfactory**. I have a hard time prioritizing between all my different tasks. It often feels like I am split apart. My main problem is that I often end up saying “Yes” too much. I should be better at saying No. #### Structure and organize my work - **Good**. Unfortunately I have a little too many things to do, which means that there are things that could be done better. #### Carry out work as agreed - **Very good**. I take pride in doing things as good as possible. - 1.2 My ability to cooperate and contribute towards a good working environment is **excellent** Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Contribute towards an open, permissive working climate. - I do whatever I can to be as inclusive at the workplace as possible. One of my main drivers is helping others achieve greatness, at least that is one of the things I believe and try to stride for. #### Treat colleagues and students with respect. - I do my best and try to suck a little less each day. #### Share knowledge and experiences with colleagues - I am a big believer in transparency and openness, so yes. I think I drive towards this. #### Build and maintain relationships and networks, both within and beyond the department or equivalent - This is probably one of my greatest strengths. I am excellent in new networks and contact. Also, this is one of things that I think is really rewarding, meeting new people. - 1.3 My ability to contribute towards operational development is **very good** Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Contribute towards the development of working methods and knowledge environments - I would say that I constantly strive to develop new methods. Especially in teaching, stretching boundaries and going that extra mile to do something which sticks out. Big believer in trying new tools and working in new ways. #### Deal with changes to circumstances, assignments, and work duties - In many ways this is also one of my negative things. I am maybe too open for changes, and cope very well with a flexible environment. This also makes my life very hard to plan, and makes it very hard to be focusing…. So not sure at all this is a positive trait. #### Contribute towards the development of my unit - Yes. #### Contribute towards the development of university-wide issues - To be fair, not always sure of the aim. ### Education - During the revision period, my involvement in education was **60 %** (on average). - 2.1 My ability to implement, develop and lead high-quality teaching is good to **very good** (depending on which context CS or as general lecturer univ.) Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Structure and organize the subject’s knowledge area in courses and my teaching - I do have a long way still in terms of development in the subject area of CS. I am really struggling as much as I can to go towards a deeper understanding. But, I am open with this and compensate with my previous experiences. Regarding the university lecturer role in whole, I consider myself as a very natural speaker and do seldom have any problems with students complaining. In this context (appraisal) I can put forward that my evaluations generally are exceptionally good, and my previous experience from UBC proved that as well, those evaluations could make anyone blush. #### Plan and carry out teaching - Planning is maybe my weaker point, I link this to the fact that I have so many things always in the doing. I am a doer .. Which means that when I do it it’s full hearted, and the teaching, actually standing there with students, is where I thrive. #### Supervise students/doctoral students - Only experience from undergrad and M.Sc, not any PhD-students yet. I think this is really awarding and I consider myself good at this. My weak point here is that I sometimes during higher workloads down prioritise the reading of their papers and rely too much on my experience. ## 2.2 My ability to create a commitment to and an interest in the subject is **very good** Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Motivate students to participate actively in courses/teaching - This is perhaps one of my main drivers. My background from the military has given me a lot of perspective in this area, the most important thing you can do as a leader is to inspire and motivate others. The same applies also in the classroom, there’s really not much of a difference. I really try to do my best here, if I do not think it’s fun and inspiring they certainly will not either. #### Motivate students to take a critical attitude - Yes. Big fan of scientific scepticism and the academic mindset. Of course, this might not be reflected in all my courses and I could perhaps think of this more. #### Motivate students to carry out their independent learning #### Communicate with students/doctoral students ## My ability to carry out educational development work is good Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Participation in development within my subject area - In the area of IoT, I spend a lot of time catching up with both industry and academia. Problem is that time is not enough, and I also am keeping myself in the maritime networks as well... #### Active participation in course development work - Absolutely, even though this is one of the points that I perhaps would like to get some more time for. As I have had a hard time just getting my head around the courses (new subjects) I haven’t done much development yet. But I do have a lot of ideas, and as you might know I have developed more than one course in the CS department even before I started here … #### Ability to cooperate and a desire to share knowledge with colleagues • Participation in development work together with colleagues - Yes. I am working in the ABC-method workshop. And has been involved in the hybrid-course group with other departments. #### Producing teaching materials - Apart from written guides and videos, not any books yet. We’ll see... #### Competency development - If I had more time, which I wish I had. I would like to have at least 20% for just learning the CS-basics. I have a lot still to learn, database, object oriented programming, etc etc. This is really something I would like to discuss on a strategic level. #### Describe how you used your competency development to improve your education or educational skills. - So far I would say that all my competency time, and a lot of my free time (as it is not enough, working too much) goes to building networks, writing applications and also writing articles. So all my development is not in the educational area, but rather in the research. ## 3 Research During the revision period, my involvement in research was **20%** (on average). - My ability to carry out high-quality research is **satisfactory** Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Achieve high-quality scientific results. - Inadequate in IoT. I have not done much in this area. And now I am talking about the CS-domain which might be unfair. I we look at my profile I would say it’s satisfactory, I haven’t researched as much as my ambition was... #### Organize and lead research projects and research teams - Not much experience in this area. #### Participate actively in advanced seminars - Yes. I generally try to be active and join in on seminars. #### Initiate and develop collegial research cooperation - Initiated several collaborations, DISA application with Sensative and Maritime Acedemy. Formas application with Jorge. Vinnova with Welf, Jesper, Rafael and Narges. Energymyndigheten with Karl-Olof and Truong. Tillväxtverket with several other partners and colleagues. RISE for IoT farmer measurement. #### Apply for and obtain external research funding - So far, maybe small money, so I wouldn’t say very successful. But doing my best. There’s a lot of things that might happen very soon. #### Achievenationalandinternationalpublicationinhigh-rankingjournalsorsimilar - Only one conference last year. ## 3.2 My involvement in the research community is satisfactory Motivate your assessment with examples, using the following criteria: #### Guest research - After PhD. Spent two weeks as a guest researcher at Strathclyde University 2019. Not formally, but invited to Japan, KOBE Institute. Collaborations with UBC still. #### Invited talks - Talking about IoT-teaching in the UN committee. #### Involvement in program committees, journals, etc. - Reviewer, but I guess that applies to all active researchers. ### Carry out commissions as anexpert, a faculty opponent, or a member of a grading committee - N/A #### Carry out commissions in external research organizations ## 3.3 Competency development Describe how you used your competency development to do research. ## 4 Collaboration with society - 4.1 My ability to produce information about research and to collaborate with the rest of society is **satisfactory** #### Publish in popular science publications - N/A #### Participate in public debate on issues relating to education and research - Been part of Forskar outreach. Also been part of presenting research at Forskar Grand Prix (2017) #### Participate in public education - Been active with workshops at schools. Really reaching out to the public sector in the IoT area. #### Participate in initiatives to develop contact with industry, the public sector, and the cultural sector - This is where I shine. I have been very active in this area. ## Services to the department, faculty, and university During the revision period, my involvement in administration/other was **22%**(on average). List your engagements below and motivate why these are important to consi- der when appraising your work performance. - Programme director Software Engineering: I have maybe taken a more visionary role rather than administrative. There needs a new path for this programme, and there are things that really needs to be addressed regarding the whole department in Kalmar. I do my absolute best to encourage the students and also build on the idea of a greater vision for the programme. - M&E at DIACCESS project: I think this might be important due to the fact that I volunteered for this, rather than me being a fantastic worker. This is one of the tasks I would rather see disappeared on my list as it takes more time and energy than I get “paid” for it. ## Other information Provide any additional information that you think is important to know when appraising your work performance, such as extended sick leaves, parent leave, engagements that took significant time, etc. If you think that your salary is incorrect, for example, compared to your peers, please note that here and motivate why. Be as specific as possible. - I do think I am both generally OK paid as well as underpaid, it depends on which way I think about it. I am also not sure I can be compared fully to my peers in the department, as I actually have a background from a different field which I still am active within (to some extent at least). An area which at least according to our own internal statistics pays more. But I can say that what I think is important, is that I want to get more support on becoming a programmer and help joining the CS-subject area. Also, I did not change to the CS-department because I thought I was getting a higher paygrade. I can honestly say that I have never worked so much before (so compared to my hourly pay I guess I am even lower now than 2y ago ...), but I switched to the CS-dep because I do have a very keen interest in learning. I love computers and technology, that’s really my biggest interest. Getting to work at this department with what I love might be really the best thing I can do. With that said - salary has obviously a large part to play, but just to get things in perspective.
