#
Experience sharing on BMW Lab
###### tags: `Internship` Having great interest in 5G development, I took OpenRAN topic under BMW Lab for my internship. Before the internship, I need to study pre-internship materials consisted of 5G and OpenRAN background learning. I made study notes on it [here](https://hackmd.io/@ferlinda/r1R0VVsAB). My supervisor for this topic is Professor Ray-Guang Cheng and my mentor is Jonathan, an alumnus from my university with the same major (computer engineering). Initially, TEEP@AsiaPlus internship program was held on site in the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). However, Wuhan corona virus emerged and became a major pandemic. Due to this pandemic, travel to Taiwan is not possible. This on site internship was then held remotely for the first time. July 1st 2020 marks the start of internship and we met through WebEx. We reported our progress with [Daily Notes](https://hackmd.io/@ferlinda/r1JyWjdRU). Our weekly progress was presented in weekly meeting every Wednesday via WebEx, you can see our meetings on [TEEP@AsiaPlus Remote Intern](https://hackmd.io/@RayCheng/SkUY5PFAI) main page. There are two more students beside me who took OpenRAN as their topic, they're [Hary](https://hackmd.io/@haryridart/Hk-gLC_AU) and [Patrick](https://hackmd.io/@alexanderpatrick/SJ2vSpOA8). Although we're all taking OpenRAN as topic, we took care of different parts of OpenRAN. I'm responsible of RAN Intelligence Controller, while Patrick's O-DU High and Hary's O-CU. RAN Intelligence Controller realize one of the core principle of OpenRAN: intelligence. It allows AI/ML integration in RAN, one of it is through Acumos Platform. Acumos interns' topic, [Akmal](https://hackmd.io/@akmalns/Checklist) and [Christofel](https://hackmd.io/@christofel04/TEEP2020_Checklist) from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), is related to my topic. There are two parts of RAN Intelligence Controller: near-RT RIC and non-RT RIC. My focus is on [near-RT RIC](https://hackmd.io/@ferlinda/H1xN0cdAU), Akmal presents detailed explanation on non-RT RIC, and Christofel is more about Acumos itself. We improved our understanding of the topic through reading each others study notes and weekly meetings. Although we unfortunately can't directly come to NTUST to experience the internship, it has been an interesting journey for me to explore more about OpenRAN under the guidance of my mentor, Jonathan, and Professor Ray-Guang Cheng as my supervisor.
