We are working on the this year's Fedora Week of Diversity and we would like to invite you to participate as a speaker. We found your name through tapping personal networks from the Fedora DEI Team. We feel you would be an ideal fit to be a part of this years event. The dates of the event are October 14th & 15th (virtual). We know the event is coming up quickly, so we are happy to host whatever DEI related talk you may have in your back pocket. The goals of the event are to celebrate our diverse community and inspire everyone for growth. Please let us know if you are interested in speaking at Fedora Week of Diversity. We are happy to host pre-recorded sessions if the dates don't work for you. Feel free to follow up with any questions or thoughts, and we hope to hear from you soon! Best wishes, ##### Email samples We are inviting folks who have had an experience of participating in the community as a mentee. Our goal is to inspire mentees for the coming years. We like to think that your experiences as a mentee could help us understand what went well and what could be improved upon in our initiative. Would you be interested in joining us as a member of a discussion session? We are inviting folks who have had an experience of participating in the community as a mentee. Our goal is to inspire mentees for the coming years. We like to think that your experiences as a mentee could help us understand what went well and what could be improved upon in our initiative. Would you be interested in joining us as a member of a discussion session? I'm Marie Nordin, the Fedora Projects Community Action and Impact Coordinator at Red Hat, and I'm emailing on behalf of myself and Monica Ayhens-Madon, Ubuntu Community Representative at Canonical. We are fellow community professionals in open source, and we would like to invite you to be a part of a panel submission for the Open Source Summit Europe in Dublin, September 13th-16th 2022. The topic for the panel we are proposing is "Mental Health in Community Caretaking." We found your name through research online and tapping personal networks. From review of your previous speaking engagements, we feel you would be an ideal fit to be a part of this panel discussion. Through our research we found that there are a handful of presentations out there about mental health in open source communities, but none (that we could find) specifically geared towards professional community caretakers. We also didn't find any panel sessions on this topic. We feel a panel discussion could provide the possibility for more insight and ideas to emerge. If our proposal gets accepted, speakers on the panel would then collaboratively determine the exact topics we will examine. Please let us know if you are interested in being a part of this panel session. The deadline for proposals is May 30th, so please let us know by this Friday, May 27th, if you are interested and able to participate. We'd like to note that if you don't think you can make it in person, there is a good chance you would still be able to participate as the event is hybrid. If you are interested, we would like to share the abstract with you and other panelists to refine our draft and give our best shot at acceptance to the conference. Feel free to follow up with any questions or thoughts, and we hope to hear from you soon! ## August 29th, 2022 ### Chair - Marie Nordin ### Attendees - Coty Sutherland ### Welcome, and hellos! - How are you today? ### Social Agreement - Focus on listening - Stay present as much as possible, refrain from email/chat/etc - Let everyone have a chance to speak, be aware of how much time you are talking - Be mindful of the meeting schedule and help to move the dialog forward - Use the raise hand function - Stay on mute when you are not speaking ### Discussion - Coty and Marie discussing whats going on with DEI efforts at RH - Meetup happening in October to work on DEI topics - Evaluation of Red Hat's DEI culture - Deloitte - Apco - How do we feel as red hatters about red hat DEI - its a mixed bag, often we work with a team that is great, might not be exposed to the "rougher" parts of the tech community - Coty works with Apache a lot, they have an issue with cultural appropriation - Apache Software Foundation is 501c3, they have many projects underneath them - Red Hat relationship with Apache is, we pay engineers to work on Apache - We hope to have Red Hat influence Apache for betterment - Apache SF does great things by giving free software to the world, but they can do more by giving back to Apache, rebranding, to reach out to the Apache Nation - Marie works in OSPO, which is a very diverse team. Feels lucky to be on a team that cares so much about DEI. - That being said, I have personally felt the effects of casual sexism - In the Fedora community, I am often the only woman "in the room" ## August 15th, 2022 ### Chair - Marie Nordin (riecatnor) ### Attendees - Luna Jernberg (bittin) - Vipul Siddharth (siddharthvipul1) - Marie Nordin (riecatnor) - Justin Flory (jflory7) ### Welcome, and hellos! - How are you today? ### Social Agreement - Focus on listening - Stay present as much as possible, refrain from email/chat/etc - Let everyone have a chance to speak, be aware of how much time you are talking - Be mindful of the meeting schedule and help to move the dialog forward - Use the raise hand function - Stay on mute when you are not speaking ### Discussion - Nest with Fedora wrap up - 5 Lessons from DEI team session - Justin & Vipul met to discuss/plan - Its okay to not do everything you want to do - Read directly from speaker notes, for accessibility - Was an interesting new experience - Changes or difference for next time? - Wish there was more energy for preparation, but overall it was well constructed and went well - Open Source, Diversity, & Fedora - Was second or third time presenting, so content was well structured, Rikard knew the content well - Would be happy to present again at Fedora Week of Diversity - Idea for future: 30 minutes Rikard talking, 30 minutes from another person - Some issues with slides through hopin Libreoffice only stayed on 1 slide and in Windowed mode - Could add some more things to create visual interest, backgrounds and pictures - Feedback from the audience: Paul talked about he had accommodations in the states of Massachussetts in the US. Linux/FOSS community is fairly welcoming to people who are neurodiverse. GNOME is easier than other desktop environments. Paul would be interested in presenting on this topic as well. - Rikard thoughts on general event: liked the practical sessions - Fedora Week of Diversity - Working group has been planning, meeting - Lean Project Discussion planned - Requesting Hopin - Team building event planned - DEI focused swag, for speakers/organizers - A lecture on diversity from public speakers/professionals - Amanda Kirby - Badges: - participation - appreciation day - social media plan to appreciate others in fedora - Can we get a public link to invite for meeting? - Outreach to other organizations and companies doing work on accessibility and diversity, to attend or participate in FWD ### Tickets - https://pagure.io/fedora-diversity/issue/233 - Accessible hardware (keyboards) - Can ask what kind of accessibility hardware do people use/have? - Is it compatibile with Linux/Fedora? - Justin asks: - What do we hope to do with the information beyond recommendations - What actions would come out of the survey - Wants to remind us of scope creep, we could come up with questions forever, maybe we need to know exactly what the A11y group wants to do with the survey - Can be a problem if we ask too many questions, and we aren't able to do action on them - DEI team can absolutely spread the word, promote - We want to understand what they want to do with the survey? - Marie to grab questions about how to design survey/questions - LinkedIn could provide some resources about how to do these surveys - User interfaces - What are peoples diversity intersections? - What do people need? What would make Fedora/Linux more accessible for you? - Where to send/advertise - Diversity in Open Source - Orca mailinglist/group - https://wrongplanet.net/forums/ - Autism and Aspergers forum ## August 1th, 2022 ### Chair - Jona Azizaj ### Attendees - Luna Jernberg (bittin) - MaΓra Canal (mairacanal) - Jona Azizaj (jonatoni) - Marie Nordin (riecatnor) - Coty - Onuralp (thunderbirdtr) ### Welcome, and hellos! - How are you today? ### Social Agreement - Focus on listening - Stay present as much as possible, refrain from email/chat/etc - Let everyone have a chance to speak, be aware of how much time you are talking - Be mindful of the meeting schedule and help to move the dialog forward - Use the raise hand function - Stay on mute when you are not speaking ### Discussion - Fedora Nest 2022 later this week - three sessions: - Group photo session - 5 lessons learned - neurodiversity, open source, & fedora - join in and give our teammembers support :) - https://hopin.com/events/nest-with-fedora-2022 - Fedora Week of Diversity 2022 Updates - looking for more volunteers - Online with maybe smaller IRL events?
