--- tags: Sprint, Farms, Dairy title: Borden Milk Dairy Sprint --- # Borden Milk Dairy Sprint :cow: :::info MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF FREE MILK!!! THIS IS A HUGE DEAL. PLEASE read all of the Background! It's time to MOOOOOOOve!!! ::: ### Background **We have a new connection with Borden Dairy in Texas.** This farm has distributors all over America, and they currently have a USDA grant to ship ready-to-go gallons of milk (pasteurized, processed, packed in gallons just like in the grocery store). Here's the information they shared: *"The USDA has awarded Borden a contract to distribute millions of gallons of free milk from May 15 - June 30 to 501c3 organizations. The contract will hopefully be extended beyond this date. Borden will supply milk to consumers in the Southeast, Southwest and Midwest regions, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas."* We want to find organizations that will get the milk into the hands of folks in food deserts. Borden is producing this milk specifically for this program, so the milk is ***entirely free***. There's no legal issue here because Borden Dairy is doing all of the transportation (and has all necessary clearances). :::warning #### Warnings! (1) Do NOT call **Feeding America** or **Second Harvest** Food Banks! (2) Do NOT call food banks in Florida! ::: ## Core Details of the Deal :glass_of_milk: - ***All milk is entirely free*** - Borden can transport at **minimum** 1 pallet of milk - 1 pallet = 180 gallons of milk (40 x 40 x 5.5 feet) - Milk is packaged in individual gallon jugs (just like a grocery store) - Shelf-life = 14-16 days (lots of time to get it into the hands of people who need it!) Here's some information from the folks at Borden Dairy: *"Our preference is to do a larger drop less frequently if you have the storage space. If not, our minimum drop is 1 pallet and we can schedule that as often as needed. I want to emphasize we can do as little (1 pallet) to as much milk as your organizations need."* :::info ### Phone call template *Hi __<insert contact’s name>__, my name is __<insert your name>__ and I am calling you to talk about FarmLink. We are a 501c3 eligible non-profit looking to connect farms with surpluses to food banks in need in order to fight the growing food instability crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. We're currently working with Borden Dairy in Texas to get fresh refrigerated milk to food banks all over the country for free.* ::: ## MUST-HAVE INFORMATION :bangbang: **** Each question below lines up with a column on [this Google Sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lfFcgdX6tWSJzoihAZGu3y1F9m1mYeAXk2KQNM3FY0s/edit?usp=sharing). **** - **"Do you have refrigeration space?"** - We have to first make sure that they can take a milk donation! - **"How much milk can you take?"** - Minimum: 1 pallet (180 gals) - Maximum: 1 full truckload = 42 pallets (7560 gals) - **"What frequency of delivery would be helpful?"**   - *THIS IS HUGE... THEY COULD SET UP WEEKLY MILK DELIVERIES...* - One time delivery, weekly, every other week, etc.? - **"What is your preference for days and times for deliveries?"** - Borden can be fairly flexible, but as many time intervals with as wide of windows as possible is ideal - *Borden needs 48-72 hours to schedule a delivery* - **"What is your address for delivery?"** - **"Do you have a loading dock?"** - If no: **"Do you have a forklift or pallet jack?"** - **Delivery contact person and phone number** - **501c3 documentation** (see below) ### 501c3 Documentation **** For Borden to send milk to a food bank, we must provide Borden with the food bank's 501c3 documentation. When a food bank has agreed to accept Borden milk donations, please ask the food bank to send a certificate of their 501c3 non-profit status to your personal email. Then, when you receive the document, please rename it in the format "Food Bank Name, City, State" and place it in the "Deals" folder (in the Google Drive) in the folder "Borden Dairy 501c3 Documentation." [Here is the folder.](https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Muuq2I6_1k37t7RepfzM8tNW61m0PcKW) *Please make it clear that this step must be completed in order to receive deliveries.* If you do not feel comfortable sharing your contact information with the food bank, if you run into any permissions issues on the Google Drive, or if you have questions, feel free to give food banks my email (jordan_hartzell@brown.edu) or shoot me a slack message! Thanks for your flexibility, you rock :sign_of_the_horns: ****
