How we are affected in everyday life when we guard mother earth. #### Nature our Teacher … sowing, planting and assembling elements that organically cooperate without human interaction. --- ## About the Centre *Cornucopia farm* is a seventy-two acre site that was purchased in 1994. Always evolving, it has been managed as an organic market garden (selling locally), a tree nursery and it now functions as a working organic permaculture farm, currently feeding two families and visitors. Nearly half of the land has been reserved for over 45,000 planted trees. The farm is also used as a healing ceremony centre with people-care taking precedence. With a combined educational element, people are also taught how to move forward towards a more sustainable way of living. How is it structured, and how do we maintain optimum soil health?** This applied course examines the practical application of the processes of **building fertility**, **making biofertilizers** and **soil amendments**, **soil type identification and testing**, and gives a clear picture of **soil biology**, and of a healthy soil food web. It describes a complex living system in the soil and how it interacts with the environment, plants, and animals. ### Thermophilic composting …is the practice of breaking down biological waste with thermophilic (heat-loving) bacteria. The key advantage of thermophilic composting is that the high temperatures kill diseases. Human faeces composted by worms is not safe to use on food-plants, but several months of thermophilic composting will render it quite harmless. All the organisms that cause human diseases are adapted to live around human body temperature. Higher temperatures kill them. Compost that stays at 50°C (122°F) for 24 hours will be safe to use to grow food. A temperature of 46°C (115°F) will kill pathogens within a week. 62°C (143.6°F) will kill pathogens in one hour. ### Anaerobic digestion …is a collection of processes by which [microorganisms](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microorganisms "Microorganisms")break down [biodegradable](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodegradable "Biodegradable") material in the absence of [oxygen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen "Oxygen"). The process is used for industrial or domestic purposes to [manage waste](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waste_management "Waste management") or to produce fuels. Much of the [fermentation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermentation_(biochemistry) "Fermentation (biochemistry)") used industrially to produce food and drink products, as well as home fermentation, uses anaerobic digestion. ### Anaerobic organisms …work without oxygen, so most anaerobic takes place underground without fresh O^2^. Anaerobic organisms work at slower rates than their aerobic counterparts and they exude smelly gas as a byproduct of their exertions. Because of the colder conditions weed seeds and plant pathogens aren’t destroyed. ### Bio-Fertilizer …is the process of remineralizing soils that have been damaged by shortsighted agriculture practices. Working with damaged soils can be a huge challenge.
