# TA notes (by ???) # Takeaways & Ideas ## Things to keep in mind 1. What assumptions do we have about reaching out for help? - That students are comfortable with it 2. How do we encourage students to ask for help? How does it vary across students from different cultural/social background? - Be careful of doubling down (enforcing checkins, office hours) - Connect with students on a personal level and identify the best way to help each individual student 3. Help students develop a sense of belonging to the subject; help students develop an identity as someone who belongs to CS. ## Potential Logistical Solutions 1. Clarify when grades will come out/ make sure that the timing is consistent 2. Sample project for final project 3. Regular grades checkinĀ  4. Have quiet hours on Piazza, set expectations about when questions will be answered 4. Provides alternatives when a student has trouble with accessing the course material due to VPN/hardware issues 5. Make more-than-usual announcements to increase instructor's presence and make sure students understand that instructors are always there to help 6. Promptly answer questions 7. Pre-course surveys and keep track of timezone 8. Clear rubrics 9. Weekly assignment recaps on Monday? 10. We could have some sort of interview question contest hour where everyone zoom/vscode and do the same question..? and afterwards everyone can post their solution on piazza/canvas 2. We can match students so that they can be mock-interview partners 3. We can have a discussion board where students can post cool packages that they've found, like the #reference channel 4. Community slack 5. Regular feedback surveys, especially after the first few classes
