# Disclaimer :bulb:
- The following class shows you a guideline, which covers the common ground of research methodology.
- However, later on you may find that each supervisor has different style. So go along with it and try to make some adjustment.
- You may use and/or distribute the course material as long as you put a proper citation.
----
# Disclaimer
- I can’t guarantee a full success story to all of you. It’s really depend on yourself to follow and to develop your own style and path.
- I also can’t force something that’s not your style and believe and vice versa. So the relationship in the course is based on respect and mutual benefit.
---
# Objectives :bulb:

# How I set the final mark
- All of you are top notch students and your job is to prove the reason why I should give you an A.
- There’s an very short exercise each week.
- It’s very short that you won’t think of it as an exercise. I won’t give you more load than you’ve already had from other courses.
----
# How I set the final mark
- Percentage: tests (60%), exercise (20%), printed proposal (20%).
- If you do all of them, you’d be fine.
- So let’s have a fun course.
---
# What you can expect from me
- **Motivation**: this is the most important one. Failing student is mostly unmotivated student.
- **Research basics and some examples**: I will guide you to learn step by step and I’ll show you the dos and don’ts
- **Research ideas**: I might give you topic suggestions
----
# What you can’t expect from me
- A rocket science: I only teach something simple, something I know, something I experienced in the past
- Source of fund: but I can recommend you how to get a fund
- Detail explanations: I will choose what to give you and I’ll help each of you to get in to detail in each of your case.
---
# What I from you
- Active communication: email me as frequent as you want (but) with a clear subject. Ask me something when we are Skyping etc
- Two way interaction: I’d like to exchange information with you.
- Think beyond A, B, C: Always think that the goal of each course you take (including this one) will be your thesis. So the output of the course is beyond grade.
---
# Some common mistake
- I’ve been doing this half of my life.
- Plus I get to experience it myself.
- So the following are some common mistake in research that I identify.
- I also may use your experience for future students.
- But don’t worry name and places aren’t kept in private.
----
# Too late to start
- Time is your biggest enemy.
- I often see students that start to find their research question in second semester.
- That’s way to late my dear friends.
- But they say, ”the enemy of your enemy is your friend”. That’s habitual routine.
- This class develops research habits out of you.

----
# Too late to start
- Introducing ”start from the EaST”
- Start Early: start your research from day one (1st semester).
- Start Simple and Small: try to find small and simple problem from your neighbourhood.
- Start Talking: try to talk your ideas to as many as students or lecturers and see what you can get from them.

# Being unrealistic
Here are some examples of unrealistic topic in master level (or in any other level):
- Mapping the hydrogeology of Indonesia
- Solving floods/drought/poverty in Indonesia
- Proposing farming irrigation system for Indonesia
----
# Being unrealistic
I’m not saying that they are all un-doable. You can fix them by:
- Mapping the hydrogeology of Indonesia: focussing the area e.g: volcanic system of xxx area, karst system of yyy, etc
- Solving floods in Indonesia: focussing the methodology and the area e.g: using injection well in xxx area, using artificial aquifer in yyy area.
- Solving drought in Indonesia: focussing the methodology and the area e.g: using rain-harvesting method in high rainfall area of zzz.
----
# Lack of resources an skills
You pick a topic that probably involving:
- specific equipments:
- world’s fastest super computer that is stored somewhere in Switzerland.
- expensive reservoir modelling software that needs extensive training in Norway.
- etc

----
# Lack of resources an skills
- specific skill that required new timely training:
- high level MatLab or python programming.
- operating a radiometric dating equipment.

# Lack of resources an skills
- specific rare dataset:
- time series rainfall dataset from the year 1945
- horisontal drilling well data from a big oil/geothermal company.
----
# Lack of resources an skills
- Again I’m not saying that I forbid all of you to think about such topics nor I underestimate your knowledge.
- I only need you to re-think and ask yourself, ”am I capable of doing that?”
- Master or PhD degree is not a Noble Prize.
- You need to self-evaluate:
- your skills
- the resources you can’t get in respect to your funding and your network

# Short of funding
- The basic funding for master or PhD level is: tuition fee and research funding. You are aware of those needs, but you do nothing about it.
- You probably has funding support for tuition fee, but you most likely don’t have research funding yet.
- To find a research funding, there’s no other way than writing a research proposal. We’ll discuss about it later on.
