tags: competitor, strategy
---
## Objective
Compare between DAOhaus and new alternatives (Juicebox, Tokenwalk, Mirror)
## Comparison
| Point of Comparison | DAOhaus | juicebox.money | Tokenwalk | Mirror.xyz |
| -------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Problem | Help people coordinate better to do something | Help projects raise & manage funds, as well as supporters invest in projects transparently | General coordination | Empower creators to publish, monetise and run a community |
| User Persona | More **close-knit communities** who're active in **doing things** | More **investor-investee community** who care about **financial transparency & accountability** | No clear positioning or users - they just seem to be very **reliant on Gnosis** | Started from **writers**. Now, seems more general - **new creators** looking to build communities |
| Solution | **Proposals & voting** focused governance for **consensus & decision making** | **Funding-focused & token-based** governance for **financial accountability** | Still barely formed but **seems very focused on Gnosis' capabilites** | **Publication-first, tightly coupled with fundraising, auctions, community tokens** |
| Membership | **Anyone** who is admitted by existing members | 2 types. **Funders & team members** (generally token-based) | **Yes, unsure how** | Holders of tokens |
| Shares | Non-tradeable **Shares** | **Project's own ERC-20 tokens** | **Yes, unsure how** | **Project's own ERC-20 tokens** |
| Proposals | **Wide range** of proposal types | Mainly re-configuration on **how to spend money** (funding amount/cycles, etc.). If project uses **Snapshot**, can be a **wide range** | Yes, I'm assuming via Gnosis [Reality Module](https://gnosis.github.io/zodiac/docs/tutorial-module-reality/finalize-parameters) | **Wide range** (since it's basically an entry) |
| Voting | **On-chain voting** via **Shares** (Quorum too) | **Off-chain snapshot voting** for "proposals" which are re-configurations on how money can be spent. Not sure how to submit reconfigurations | Unsure, but [Seele module](https://github.com/TokenWalk/Seele) seems to power different voting models (e.g. Quadratic Voting, etc.) |**Off-chain voting** via **Token Races** as an entry |
| Membership Exit | Rage Quit | **Not explicitly**, user can sell tokens to leave | [Seems like yes](https://www.tokenwalk.com/learn#learn_1), via Gnosis' Exit Module | **Not explicitly**, user can sell tokens to leave |
| Bank | ERC-20s & NFTs | Only **ETH**. Reliant on trust in multi-sig for other assets | I'm assuming it's via **Gnosis Safes** | **No**. Done manually outside of Project |
| Interacting with other smart contracts | Customisable via **Minions** | **No**. Done manually outside of Project | [Seems like yes](https://www.tokenwalk.com/learn#learn_1) via Gnosis' Reality Module (i.e. Safesnap) | None |
| NFTs Functionality | NFT Gallery, Rarible Buy/Sell, NFT Tributes | None | I'm assuming it's via **Gnosis Safes** | None. can only do B2C NFT sales |
| DeFi Functionality | Manually via Minion. LP DAO as a Service | None | I'm assuming it's via **Gnosis Safes** | None |
| Available Networks | ETH, xDai, MATIC, Arbitrum, (Celo) | Only **ETH Mainnet** | Currently only **Rinkeby** | Only **ETH Mainnet** |
| Fundraising | CCOs | **Yes. Main value proposition** when creating a project | Unsure, but there's a ['Purchase Token' button in the Dapp](https://www.tokenwalk.com/dao/0xb69707954ad4866dddb82e0cb15b8ef66a814a4a) | Yes. [Crowdfunds](https://mirror.xyz/dashboard/guide/crowdfunds) |
| Composability | **Minions** and **boosts** | **Yes. Can route funds to Juicebox Project on certain events** | **I'm assuming yes**, since it mentioned Safesnap/Reality | Built mostly by Mirror (non-tech audience) |
| Notable users | MetaCartel, MetaFactory, Raid Guild | SharkDAO | None | $Party, $Cabin |
## Discussion
In summary, each DAO focuses on a specific area in order to cater for a specific type of user
* DAOhaus:
* Persona: Very **broad** persona, perhaps due to more mature product
* Product: **Proposals & governance** first, as well as smart contract interactions via minions. Fundraising second
* Juicebox:
* Persona: Communities looking to **invest & get a return / financial accountability**
* Product: **Fundraising & financial accountability** first, governance still work in progress (e.g. Funding cycle, targets, token issuance, funding overflow)
* TokenWalk: Still very early project, so unclear on user persona / product offering. Seems heavily dependent on Gnosis Zodiac functionality
* Mirror:
* Persona: **New writers / creators / thought leaders** trying to create change / communities / movements / projects
* Product: **Creating articles & reaching out to audience** (publication-first) and then adding **crypto functionalities to it seamlessly** (crowdfund, NFT auctions, token issuance, etc.)
### Token voting vs shares voting
For most alternatives, token-based voting is used as tokens are a symbol of ownership which is easier for commnuity members to grasp. As such, for Juicebox and Mirror, they normally kick off the community with an ERC-20 token issued and continue with token-based voting. TokenWalk, while early, seems to support a variety of voting methods, but I assume token-based voting will be a significant feature.
For DAOhaus (the only platform with shares-based voting, for now), how do we navigate this user base? **For existing token-voting DAOs, how do we convert them to using DAOhaus (what form would the voting be like)? For new DAOs, how do we speak to these new DAOs about choosing between token and shares voting?**
### Feature Set
Within the products assessed, there are different levels of feature completeness with DAOhaus being the most complete, followed by Mirror and Juicebox, and finally TokenWalk.
While each of these products try to build towards DAO governance, they have a different feature focus, which can tell us what was their core / first user problems they tried to solve with their MVP.
For instance, Juicebox has a very heavy focus on financials and funding, with terms like 'Funding Cycle', 'Overflow' and a graph UI for each project's page. On the other hand, Mirror shows its roots as a publication / writing tool through its 'entry'-first UI, easy to use UI and crypto features built as a peripheral around the crypto functionalities.
On the flipside, DAOhaus seems to have its core as governance execution tool to execute proposals and voting (Most proposals have social consensus on other platforms before going on DAOhaus). With these core features & user group, we've managed to expand functionality to solving other DAO needs that came up (e.g. interacting with smart contracts via Minions, NFTs support, even fundraising via CCO at some point)
Learning from the other alternatives, we can definitely work on the following:
* Miror: Simple user experience as well as features to directly talk to community members, so that we can convert more non-DAOists to become DAOists
* Juicebox: Fundraising & financial accountability / management features to convert more profit and investment driven DAOs from setting up on DAOhaus
Beyond just expanding advanced functionalities for our current users (who are used to DAOhaus' share-based voting and already DIY their DAO upgrades via Minions), we should look at dedicating some of our efforts towards getting
* Non-DAO users to use DAOhaus
* Token-based / financial DAOs to use DAOhaus
### User Experience
So far, the platform with the best experience seem to be Mirror, as its UI is simple and welcoming to all types of users (crypto or not). The main **product flow looks and works like a blog** which most users are familiar with, while bundling 'crypto products' around it. Even the naming of these products like 'Crowdfund' and 'Auction' are simple and easy to grasp. I also like how **they use concepts which users are already familiar with to introduce new features**, such as 'Token Race' for the new community voting feature which borrows from '$WRITE Race'.
While Mirror's features might be insufficient for DAO / crypto experts, it definitely **serves the basic need of building a community and introducing relevant crypto technology to empower this community where applicable**. This should solve the majority of problems for the people who are new to DAOs (likely to be 10x or more than the current folks doing advanced stuff in DAOhaus)
### Composability
Currently, DAOhaus is the most composable out of all due to Minions and the Boost marktplace. This is especially important, given the diverse and everchanging diverse needs of DAOs. Hence, we should leverage on DAOhaus' composability and ability for community to build Boosts to help DAOhaus stay relevant as the community grows.
Unlike Juicebox and Mirror who are still focused on building core products or targeting non-tech users respectively, we can use Boosts to help DAOhaus be more relevant for certain persona / community types (e.g. Financial), while we focus on core experiences and bringing the 99% of the non-DAO world into DAOs
### Summary
In summary, there are more products trying to help community leaders / creators form and empower their communities. By targeting different profiles of communities, we see these products developing in different ways to cater to the problems faced by these profiles. For instance, Juicebox for fundraising and financial accountability, Mirror for "idiotproof" and simple user experience.
For the incoming non-DAOists (which is 99% of the rest of the world), **DAOhaus' focus on voting and proposal execution might not be the first thing they think of when creating their communities**. They might be thinking about other things like a shared DAO identity, financial accountability, high-touch community interactions, etc. In order to stay relevant to this new profile, we might need to **focus on creating a user-friendly and intuitive product offering, as well as observing what new DAOs want**.
When these new DAOs start to form, it is likely they'll branch off into different profiles, interests and needs too. For this, DAOhaus should use the Boosts Marketplace and Minion capabilities to empower these DAOs to build what they need to solve.
More specifically on fundraising, it seems like most new DAOs are formed and 'summoned' with a fundraising and token issuance event. If this is what users are used to, we should be ramping up on our CCO workstream as well.
Lastly, it seems that a lot of new projects (even outside of Tokenwalk) are going to be **building products and serices on top of Gnosis**. While we do not want to be monopolistic on how DAOs / Safes should operate, we should **pay close attention and see how we can utilise the Gnosis Guild momentum to expand DAOhaus' community and Boosts**
