--- tags: Rangers, notes, Open Haus --- # Open Haus Notes: 6/16/2021 ## Rangers Onboarding → Contributing - What does the onboarding process look like to maintain engagement? - What would it look like to contract services outward as a group of contributors to other DAOs such as BanklessDAO? - How do we recognize people who are providing value? How do we help clarify the path for contributing? - Tracks could allow for voting contributors into full membership and also help to provide visibility toward contribution? - Claiming POAPs for completing work? - [Gitcoin Quests](https://gitcoin.co/quests) are basically this (getting a POAP for completing work) - Folks showing up on calls such as Haus Party has value (receive the POAP) → could this count toward increasing XP or levels? - What can we do to engage lurkers? - How much do we reward attendees of calls and meetings? - If someone comes to a meeting *and participates*? - There are a lot of options to help level people up with the Discord reboot - Importance to be aware of the purpose and providing insight into how to contribute - Gamification is cool but need to be aware to not make it *not too complex* - Humans trying to contribute and find a way through the process - Providing *wayfinding* to provide value - Providing *scaffolding* - Teach people what things are and how they can contribute - There are ways to game things — how to avoid things becoming chores and decreasing enjoyment of the platform - Human element is the most important - Reaching out is crucial and encouraging - Direct outreach scaffolds involvement ### Engagement and Contribution - Education tracks - Way to get people formally into the DAO and contributing - Should be able to stand on its own (somewhat) - Quests - Can these be utilized to provide *scaffolding* and *encouragement* after people are initially brought in? - What methods and processes are there for keeping people engaged? - Human contact and outreach → keep potential contributors hooked while they explore and see what value they can provide - "Transparency of information" and "Contributor Experience" is a new area for exploration - Participation and "Contributor Experience" is a core aspect of DAOs and is critical - How does someone find out *what* they can contribute? - Once they know *what*, *how* do they contribute? - Beyond that, *why* would someone want to contribute? - Why → How → What - Reputation as a way to earn voting power - Proof of Contribution → know 100% on chain that this person could be trusted since they have a reputation that can be *slashed* by the DAO if they did something negative or malicious - Does a lack of GSuite cause issues? - *Individuals* use centralized products, but... - In true decentralization, DAO would own access to Medium or Twitter and delegate control to members and the DAO could then pull access back if needed - Adding a *maximum amount of voting power* could be an improvement - This currently exists on a social consensus level within a DAO - Ensuring there are safeguards so certain in-groups don't acquire too much power - DXDao Contribution - *Contribute* → direct link to the GitHub (but these are all individuals GitHubs — not the DAO's GitHub) - DAOs having bounties and projects that need to be done it's much easier to have newcomers jump in - MetaGame's Notion is a good resource for the *Evergreen Quests* for technical and non-technical newcomers - How to help folks contribute when they're available for only a few hours? - How do you balance this with getting folks up to speed with contributing to the codebase? - Unless having an isolated task it's hard to get people able to contribute — this also exists for non-technical tasks - Project and task lists is a great way to provide a sense of what's needed in a Guild/DAO while also providing wayfinding and scaffolding on *how* to contribute - There are lots of non-technical contributions: documentation, processes, etc. that provide insight into *how the DAO operates* while also having a clear output - *Information needs to be as available as possible* — after the initial investment in the content that is a great way to get people involved - Common problem in decentralization: - Don't need multiple job boards — why not focus on 1 so that folks know where to go? - Can have several competing boards but then find 1 that gains traction - Divergent angles and takes is healthy for product development — will help determine what sticks and has traction over time - Seeing writing and communication samples is a way to gain insight into how people think and communicate - Writing helps establish points of permanences so that ideas aren't lost writing things down → reviewing what is written → providing it to people who need to see it ### How to DAO - *How to DAO series of articles/docs?* - Requesting payment is an area that would be included in this - Basic series on concepts about contribution, requesting payment, etc. - *Value* is the keyword in these conversations, but how does this translate to be forward-facing? - What are the outcomes and how are these identified? These would ideally come from a North Star and mission alignment - Need to have a base amount of value extraction to feel rewarded, but don't want to extract too much that it would be harmful to the larger DAO - Likelihood is participating and contributing in multiple DAOs, but the challenge is a question of *where to extract value from* or *how and when to extract value?* - What happens if someone is brought on *to contribute* and *doesn't contribute*? - Be mindful of which permissions they receive — nothing lost if they don't contribute (provided they don't request payment) - DAOs need to have *community alignment* and *information availability* to prevent gaming reward systems - Calls for maximum transparency — SourceCred is often a blackbox that communities rely on ## Resources - [https://dxdao.eth.link/#/manifesto](https://dxdao.eth.link/#/manifesto) - [https://dxdao.eth.link/#/worker-compensation](https://dxdao.eth.link/#/worker-compensation) - [Wordsmiths Meetup](https://hackmd.io/Vv3NnAhlQZm4gkwnqtjsLw)
