Notes: S3Ep8 (Liscon FOMO Edition) Join us for 🎉 Haus Party Live 🎉 every Thursday at 2pm EST on the [DAOhaus Discord](https://discord.gg/daohaus) ## Notes From the [Livestream](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1183021727) 🎉 > Initial notes shared after Haus Party LIVE! but will be updated afterward with more references and resources. **Topics** - Liscon FOMO - Open conversation with the audience **Hosts & Guests** - dekanbro, Vanilladelphia.eth, vengist, and other folks! --- 🌱 Welcome to our metaphorical garden! 🌱 ## Liscon FOMO - Felipe is hosting [The DAOist](https://www.thedaoist.co/) event in Lisbon - Grabbing some audience questions and jamming ## Updates (DAOhaus Universe) - DAOhaus has *The Boost Bonanza* coming up -- special boosts and integrations launching - Other NFT ideas in the works - Next week we'll have more coming out with *multicall forms* - If you've used safe minions, this will 10x capability by adding in multicall functionality - Experimenting with linking 2 DAOs by sharing a Gnosis safe - Shared alignment around a single treasury - Look for infographics showcasing some basic DAO configurations possible on DAOhaus - **Wargames** - Anyone coming to Haus Party Live able to participate in these FlashDAOs - Can either claim or play the *DAO Wargame* - Last week introduced idea of *social contracts* - Investigating altruism and social relations ## Meditations on Moloch - [Meditations on Moloch by Scott Alexander](https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/07/30/meditations-on-moloch/) - What impact did this have on you and your web3/crypto journey? - Not like a "Our DAO vs. your DAO" or "us vs. them", it is "all of us vs. Moloch" - Moving away from these dichotomies and instead thinking about how we can coordinate -- breaking down coordination happens internally often - As we see cultures within the space emerge, such as Degen, we should remain aware that when we're creating new things it doesn't need to be 100% of a single thing - Competition in the space is to drive ourselves to do better, not to squish each other's projects and ideas - "Want to lift up everyone because what we want to do is build something better for the future." - TravisWyche's take on some of the philosophical themes throughout: - Found this through the Moloch Ventures whitepaper alongside "8 Principles for Managing a Commons" - Living document that we can (and should) continue contributing towards -- there are many openings about how we think about the "world as an economic game" - Contextualized through existential risk - There are real stakes at play, there is extenstential risks around how we communicate and collaborate with each other, and losing the game has real consequences - Also reminiscent of Aaron Swartz's work, particularly hyperlocal ideas about governance: http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/parpolity - People should be voting on things that they have skin in the game on - Much of how DAOhaus works now is inspired from these ideas ### Applied Learnings from Meditations on Moloch - As we're moving forward with lots of velocity it's important to have a strong sense of alignment - Calling the contract `moloch.sol` is interesting and has caused lots of confusion throughout the years - Idea is to be *slaying* Moloch, not worshipping Moloch - "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" similarity -- does creating a DAO have a similar set of effective core principles for creating a community? - What things have been learned from reading MoM that can be actively applied to creating a new DAO? - Revealing weaknesses that led to lack of coordination - Theme of centralized power is present throughout -- aware of creating "coordination mechanisms instead of mechanisms of control" - Aware of this when setting up DAO processes - We talk a lot about trustless mechanisms but these help us actually develop more trust in each other - Emergent property in these mechanisms - Moving from control to coordination mechanisms is a huge shift, but once you start to understand it and see the elements that lead to coordination over control - Once trust is there, less checks need to happen -- this is critical, especially for smaller DAOs - "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." - Not a strict dichotomy. As a DAO member, it is useful at times to go fast and alone when doing something for the DAO - Working together doesn't always mean "working directly together" -- working on separate things with a merge at a point down the road - Focusing entirely on efficiency can lead to existential risks - Anecdote of [Paperclip Maximizer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrumental_convergence#Paperclip_maximizer): Take a system, or AI, and task with one thing and have it do this one thing very well, it can distort the world view to *prioritize the optimization of the task* - Manifestation would be that we'd be "drowning in paperclips" - Must stay aware of what this threshold is and keep sight on values so to not lose our humanity - "Raising the sanity waterline" is happening in the DAOhaus community, and DAOs generally, and web3 more generally - Means of production moving back to the hands of the makers - Real meditation on Moloch: Convince ourselves that we're doing something for the greater good, but with a single slip we're suddenly working against ourselves and others ### Sub DAOs and Raid Guild - Sub DAOs are a way to minimize group size while also communicating back to a parent DAO - People tend to be more efficient in smaller groups, and this is how Raid Parties work - How do open systems and forking work? Sometimes this is an effective way to show dissent, and being able to fork and *rage quit* are healthy mechanisms ### Other Inspirational Texts - [Robert Heinlein's Moon is a Harsh Mistress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moon_Is_a_Harsh_Mistress) \ - Another inspirational text when thinking about decentralization - Speculative fiction is useful for imagining alternative timelines - The *dystopian side* of blockchain is interesting -- tend to hear more about the *utopian side* - What potential futures are we accidentally leading ourselves into? - [Neuromancer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuromancer) - [Snow Crash](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Crash) - [Cryptonomicon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptonomicon) - [Anathem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anathem) - [Always Coming Home](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Always_Coming_Home) - Your wallet as a "permenent mark" on the blockchain, and this is a serious issue with identity - Address tied to your identity can mean different things in different cultures - What are the consequences? - Raid Guild - Championing process revamp -- now, to Champion a member you need to stake an amount of tokens - Metrics need to be hit, and if not met the stake will be slashed. If met, will be rewarded! - Staking reputation can potentially be more impactful than financial staking
