🌱 ## [[1:47]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=107) Updates (DAOhaus Universe) - [dGov Hackathon](https://gitcoin.co/hackathon/dgov/) wrapped up - DAOhaus Bookkeeping App - Starting point for a bookkeeping tool for managing treasuries and transactions across DAOs - Gnosis Safe Minion - DAO governance controlling Gnosis Safe - Raid Guild Season 2 Cohort concluded and presented their projects today - [Monster Maps](https://www.monstermaps.world/) - Text-based NFT game — community exploded and grew and there is lots of development - Running a "blockchain D&D game" inside the [Discord](https://discord.gg/rqwMK42r) - Quests → Bounties (in $RAID) - 2 DAOs started: Artists creating NFT art around quests and monsters and Cartographers who are the Game Masters ## [[5:51](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=351)] John Paller and Opolis - "Building the bridge between web2 and web3" - John's background is in HR tech and employment system -- been in the employment game for almost 20 years - Had an "existential crisis" when getting into crypto in ~2016 - Everything from a legal structure, hierarchical standpoint, compliance needs to be reworked - [Opolis](https://opolis.co/) is "replication of employment" without needing to give up sovereignty or independence → - DAO speak: employment DAO with a legal wrapper - Digital employment cooperative that is tokenized and has a micro-economy that incentivizes its membership to build it - [[7:20]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=440) "Created a modern version of employment" while maintaining compliance such as taxes and W2s and insurance - Opolis addresses questions about how to function and lead a normal life while working in the Metaverse/working for DAOs - ~6mil raised in "Communities funding communities" capital raise model - Huge interest from DAO members since members need this "public utility infrastructure" so that DAOs don't need to take on this responsibility - [[8:56]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=536) If DAOs were to try to take on the employment responsibilities it would defeat purpose of being a DAO - Puts the controls of employment in the hands of each contributor but does this within the public utility infrastructure - Lots of people joining soon because of US Healthcare open enrollment periods -- big deal in the US because employment so closely tied to healthcare - Opolis gives the DAO communities/Metaverse ability to have high-quality, low-cost health insurance without need to work for a corporation - [[10:45]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=645) Opolis "web3ized" traditional employment systems plubming - Goal is to be permissionless infrastructure that works for anyone globally to gain employment benefits without giving up independence - Scaling to bring on staff to support other areas outside of the US ## [[12:34]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=754) DAOs and Overhead - DAOs can spin up fast and be purpose driven while being highly flexible - Can spin up fast and get the community going — but this is cheap because of not having "burdens of legacy systems" — wouldn't be able to get multinational teams together - Want to preserve the flexibility and fluidity of DAOs at a peak - Wouldn't be able to have the "high frequency of DAOs" - When bringing in the regulatory compliance you'd start losing elements of what makes a DAO a DAO - Regulatory compliance = cost = control - Control = DAO looks like a corporation and this is a slippery slope - [[13:54]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=834) When DAOs talk about wanting to employ people, they likely don't want this in actuality - If talking about providing security there are other ways to replicate that -- this is the point of Opolis - Replicate the "securities of employment without having to give up the independence" - DAOs should keep flexible and fluid and avoid going down the road of what businesses and corporations do - **Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)**: - Businesses can outsource services and scale more quickly than they can do it themselves, but most BPO services are targeted toward corporations not individuals - Point is to create scalability - Opolis helps create scalability - [[16:53]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1013) Opolis sees the two most important things to sustain: - 1) **Benevolence** - Allow folks to experience "benevolence at scale" - 2) **Economic Viability** - Sustainable from an economic standpoint - Opolis members are owners, like a DAO, and are creating a scalable service within an ecosystem that everyone needs and everyone is incentivized to grow the total volume ## [[19:20]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1160) Audience Members Questions About Opolis - [[20:31]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1231) What should people who are employed in multiple DAOs be doing? Should they be their own entity working across multiple DAOs? - "Employment wrapper" → use single entity to wrap all revenue streams - Similar to a "corporation of many" with several clients with everything funneling into a single PnL - Multiple revenue streams coming in to a single wrapper — "Company of One" - "Legitimizes the individual Metaverse/DAO contributor in a way that other BPOs and service providers won't touch." - Traditional BPOs only want to deal with volume, so companies of one were not of interest and so they didn't take this approach and focus - These companies are incentivized to focus on B2B, not providing services to individuals - [[22:59]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1379) Opolis has created the wrapping system and vertically integrated services stack so that the "business owner of one" can more simply manage their revenue streams in a compliant way - Opolis manages revenue streams *compliantly* - "Set it and forget it!" — Opolis abstracts nearly everything away - [[24:39]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1479) What kind of feedback has Opolis received from the traditional medical/retirement entities that it interfaces with? These are obviously centralized legacy system and it would be great to see them positively impacted by web3/DAO influence. Do you sense any reciprocity with that centralized infrastructure? Does the bridge go both ways? - Not really. Incentive design for many legacy systems is bad and are highly bureaucratic - Community is now self-insured so doesn't need to deal with as much bureaucracy as before (in terms of healthcare) — able to partner with providers/groups who are friendly or open to web3 - Haven't fully connected the dots to web3 yet, but they understand web3 and are open to it - Opolis acts as a buffer to these legacy systems - [[29:18]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1758) "People are going to do what they are incentivized to do" - Economic games we've built are terrible from an incentive point of view and are out of whack and there are layers of issues in the game design where *one* of these issues is terminal - Web3 is much more multi-dimensional and difficult in terms of game design since there are far more stakeholders and owners in DAOs than in traditional companies - Incentives are bad for foundations to create value or have people contribute — could act as an organization with even worse incentives - [[31:49]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1909) Our current version of Capitalism is highly exploitable, concentrated, and crony-esque and knee-jerk reactions are to overcorrect - [[32:15]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=1935) "How do you thread the needle of how to build value" and distribute incentives across stakeholders → positive sum games being built with DAOs - **Build our own Web3 employment Legos** - [[34:51]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2091) Did finding out what democratizing work meant to you (John) lead to Opolis? - Yes! One of his previous stratups was trying to build collaboration platform in previous startup and saw this required a "police force" to resolve disputes - All previous experiments were instrumental in forming and creating Opolis - Was a very iterative learning process leading to Opolis's design - built up their understanding of the social, legal, and team dynamics at play and it took time to learn, package it, and build a product ## [[38:02]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2282) Practical Questions - How Big is Opolis Now? - $12mil in annual payroll, with another $25mil upcoming in pipeline - Onboarding and education are now the challenges as they're growing and expanding - What do they want to do better? - 1) Shouldn't have to be a genius to be able to understand how to run your small business - Need to create a process flow and onboarding that is self-educational and beginner friendly - Connect the *why* and *best practices* - Once the community network effects kick in the community will educate the community - Need to make the information accessible — product is obvious once folks dig in so that folks can have conversations about DAO and Metaverse employment - Provide the "simple stuff" that provides a starting point with a community to support them - Opolis functionally backs up web3 values — packaging and delivering the information - 2) Opolis aiming to improve onboarding - Looking into pathways such as Discord - Aiming to make the onboarding process straight forward, clear, and painless - [[43:13]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2593) Is Opolis's main target demographic folks already in the space? Is there a path where web2 people can get into DAOs and web3? - From a default standpoint, Opolis is designed to be *fiat to fiat* - Opolis has abstracted away a lot of complexity to make things as simple as possible while still based in web3 while gradually decentralizing the elements that *can* be put on chain - Certain compliance details remain offchain due to being PII - Target audience is: - Already independent (could be crypto, but not necessary) - Lower hanging fruit is DAOs, DeFi, international contributors to blockchain companies - [[45:48]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2748) Could eventually become a placement platform when dealing with web2 folks and independent contractors: "Do you want to go work for a DAO?" - Help DAOs hire web2 folks - Operates as its own community talent marketplace - Wanting to get into DAOs, then list yourself on Opolis and DAOs and opportunities can discover you - Likely can't fully utilize these mechanics until you have a large enough community -- not quite big enough yet. Still tinkering on these, but haven't launched - [[47:33]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2853) How do independent workers handle concepts such as PTO and sick time? - "Relics of the subjugation mentality" and "paycheck culture" - In new world, compensation is more like a statement of work - [[48:38]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=2918) How do folks avoid burnout and have time off for balance? — Even if this is a relic, how do we balance this? - The *giving* of the time off is the relic — compensation correlated to *value creation not time* - you can just *take* the time off when needed - In "paycheck culture" paychecks are connected to *time* and not necessarily *value creation* - If people are incentivized to be productive they'll be productive - Moving into communities that move you and inspire! - If someone wants to get started, the first thing to do is *evaluate risk tolerance* - Opolis is a great resource for getting information about how to *professionalize* and *legitimize efforts* - [[52:05]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=3125) What can people do now? What are the calls to action? - We've heard of going bankless, can people now go jobless? - Emphasis on contributing value and expressing your own unique creativity in DAOs and communities that move you - [[53:06]](https://youtu.be/P4mlPgscJU8?t=3186) To get started, first evaluate your risk tolerance and go into this eyes wide open - Opolis is a great resource for how to "professionalize and legitimize" - Can get started now with Opolis Membership Steward - Opolis can also help folks become incorporated and check all of the boxes needed to start ## Resources - [Opolis](https://opolis.co/) - [Office Space](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0151804/)
