1. _intro leads to what is a DAO_
In your travels through crypto space…you may have landed upon the word ‘DAO’. But you’re still wondering what a DAO actually is.
DAO is short … for Decentralized Autonomous Organization.
But if you’re like most people, this explanation isn’t really helpful.
--
2. _example trad org - digital agency_
To learn how DAOs work, let’s jump right into an example with a traditional digital agency for contrast.
A business like this relies on someone to make decisions, distribute profits, hire and fire employees...the boss.
This creates a situation where the business lives or dies based on the whims of this strange creature.
And who handles the money? Who makes sure agreements are being met and things are going as planned?
An army of administrative workers, lawyers, and accountants end up using up the bulk of the company’s resources.
Despite the cost, every one of these employees answer to one authority–whoever pays the salaries. Which means that any value, goal, or agreement can be burned at a moment’s notice, without the permission of the employees.
How much effort is left for the actual purpose of the business? … not much
The problem in trusting authority to keep everything in check is that there’s no one to check that authority.
_Because of this problem, trad orgs usually end up quite Rigid, Competitive, Unfair, Opaque_
--
3. _digital agency as DAO_
Now let’s imagine this digital agency is now a DAO.
It operates online with no brick and mortar presence. Members live and work all around the world and simply use a DAO to coordinate with each other.
All actions require a proposal
Anyone with shares can vote on proposals
To become a member, you must be approved by other members.
Interested parties can stake assets or provide work in exchange for shares.
Instead of relying on a boss to lead the business, the DAO is led by the community.
_Because of this, DAOs tend to be more Agile, Collaborative, Diverse, Transparent_
--
4. _member benefits of digital agency as DAO_
Leadership still exists within a DAO, it's just that they don't have **ABSOLUTE POWER** like your typical boss in a trad org would.
In a DAO, there are no hard lines drawn and anyone can become a leader, and often members will rotate these responsibilities or even form mini councils.
Members get to harvest the fruits of their labour while enjoying the benefits of a larger organization.
Choosing their own hours and level of involvement,
...and access and voice to a collective pool of funds to better the organization.
--
5. _Technical benefits_
Perhaps most importantly, security and transparency is built in.
DAO funds can only be spent or moved with a proposal. Every transaction creates a record on an open public ledger, that cannot be censored ...the blockchain.
This removes the need for that army of bureaucrats and frees members to work on tasks more conducive to their interests.
This may sound distant and utopian, but this organization exists now.
Raid Guild.
It has grown from 5 members to 108 members, has finished an incredible number of projects, and is always recruiting new members.
--
6. _Some other current active dao use cases_
But Raid Guild is just one DAO. There’s an entire ecosystem of DAOs, each with different forms of governance that work for them.
Have a sweet idea? Pop over to Meta Cartel DAO to apply for a grant.
Need legal services or dispute resolution? Visit LexDAO
Or maybe you just need some pants. Metafactory designs clothes and coordinates small clothing manufacturers all over the world.
And the list goes on.
DAOhaus itself runs as a DAO and ownership is shared across all organizations that use it and/or build on it.

1. _intro leads to what is a DAO_
In your travels through crypto space...you may have landed upon the word ‘DAO’. But you’re still wondering what a DAO actually is. | zoom in on planet DAO
DAO is short for ... Decentralized Autonomous Organization
But if you’re like most people, this explanation isn’t really helpful.
--
2. _quick overview of a DAO_
Think of a DAO as a type of organization that coordinates purely on the internet, through a peer to peer network of collaborators.
Instead of being mediated by a board of directors or a legal system...
...the rules of a DAO, this internet organization, are written in code and secured in the blockchain.
Both the code and its results are 100% transparent and immutable, meaning every action is visible to all and the data (like results of a vote) cannot be manipulated after the fact.
This means we don't have to trust a central authority to 'manage' this information for us.
--
3. _example trad org - digital agency_
So, what does this all mean, and why is it beneficial?
To get a sense of that, let’s start with an example. Imagine we were starting a digital agency in the old world.
Digital agencies are lucky in that they can operate remotely. However, for many businesses, we need to trust our coworkers before we hand over the company accounts.
Businesses also need someone to make decisions, distribute profits, hire and fire employees.
The boss.
4. _trad problems_
This creates a situation where the business lives or dies based on the whims of this strange creature.
And who handles the money? Who makes sure agreements are being met and things are going as planned?
An army of administrative workers, lawyers, accountants who end up using up the bulk of the company's resources.
Despite the cost, every one of these employees answer to one authority--whoever pays the salaries. Which means that any value, goal, or agreement can be burned at a moment's notice, without the permission of the employees.
So what becomes of this dream of making beautiful web apps? How much effort is left for the actual purpose of the business?
Unfortunately, not much.
The problem in trusting authority to keep everything in check is that there’s no one to check that authority.
**DAOs aim to solve this problem...**
...by removing the need for a central authority and allowing a group of people to govern themselves. they’re able to reduce the surface area of corruption and bureaucratic bottlenecks, while increasing incentives and opportunity for all involved.
--
5. _digital agency as DAO_
Now let's see how a similar organization works as a DAO.
This is Raid Guild, a digital agency DAO that exists on the internet. It operates online with no brick and mortar presence anywhere. Members live and work all around the word and simply use a DAO to coordinate with each other.
All actions (adding/removing a member, distributing funds, etc) require a proposal
Anyone with shares can vote on proposals
This means to become a member, you must be approved by other members. Interested parties can stake some assets or provide work in exchange for shares.
**Instead of relying on a boss to lead an organization, a DAO is led by the community.**
6. _Benefits of digital agency as DAO_
There are some emergent perks of DAOs that can’t be matched by traditional organizations.
Without DAOs, a designer or developer would have to choose between working as an employee or owning their own business.
Members get to harvest the fruits of their labour while enjoying the benefits of a larger organization.
Members work where they want. Choose their own hours and level of involvement.
Members have access to a collective pool of funds to better the organization.
7. _Reiteration of DAO technicals and benefits_
Perhaps most importantly, security and transparency is built in.
DAO funds can only be spent or moved with a proposal. Every transaction creates a record on an open public ledger, that cannot be censored, the blockchain.
This removes the need for that army of bureaucrats and frees members to work on tasks more conducive to their interests.
This may sound distant and utopian, but it’s important to note that Raid Guild is an actual organization that exists.
It has grown from 5 members to 108 members, has finished an incredible number of projects ~100, and is always recruiting new members.

8. _Some other current active dao use cases_
But Raid Guild is just one DAO. There's an entire ecosystem of DAOs, each configured with different forms of governance that work for them.
Have a sweet idea? Pop over to Meta Cartel DAO to apply for a grant.
Need legal services or dispute resolution? Visit LexDAO
Or maybe you just need some pants. Just another pair of pants. Metafactory is a DAO that designs clothes and coordinates small clothing manufacturers all over the world.
And the list goes on.
DAOhaus itself runs as DAO.
