## DAOhaus Vision & Manifesto
We envision a future where any community can achieve its goals while reinforcing the sovereignty of its members. We build technological and cultural tools empowering communities to coordinate.
We are rebels and visionaries. We rebel by building the future we envision. The rebellion is serious, but we don't take ourselves too seriously. We are comrades more than colleagues. We work with integrity, with people of integrity.
We build for the community, with the community. We build public goods, and empower anyone to contribute. Our way of building coordination tools for communities is with community-owned coordination tools.
### DAOhaus Principles
We strive first to create value, not extract.
We strive first to collaborate, not compete.
We strive first to coordinate, not control.

## DAOhaus Past, Present & Future
### DAOhaus Birthday POAP
DAOhaus was born at the ETHBerlin convention on August 25th, 2019.
ETHBerlin was a hackathon, with judges and prizes. The judges didn't like the DAOhaus presentation much - but the community did. It won the community award and a $2000 prize.
That was enough to get the ball rolling.
Since then the DAOhaus community has grown and evolved but one thing hasn't changed: DAOhaus provides free-to-use DAO tooling and an interface to the magnificent Moloch DAO contracts.
Happy Birthday DAOhaus!
### DAOhaus Origins
> "Build fast, get something out the door. Then realize some things were built too fast. Slow down, go back to the protocol level" - Dekan
DAOhaus was born at the ETHBerlin convention on August 25th, 2019. around 3 developers (Dekan, Sam & Ven) and a community of users that needed a DAO solution. At that time it was just a side project.
*Pokemol* (Pocket Moloch) was built as an interface for MetaCartel's' Moloch v1 DAO. Pokemol was used by a few DAOs, including Raidguild. People started forking it.
The 3 founding devs decided to make DAOing a little easier by creating a directory, explorer & all-in-one DAO solution: Enter DAOhaus.
ETHBerlin was a hackathon, with judges and prizes. The judges didn't like the DAOhaus presentation much - and admittedly it was pretty bad. One slide showed a live birth of a demon child...
But DAOhaus won the community award - and a $2000 prize.
That was all it took to motivate them to keep building for a couple more weeks.
> "We decided to see how it goes" - Dekan
#### Moloch & DAOhaus v1
Then Moloch V2 came out. Moloch DAO awarded a $20,000 grant and that allowed the community to expand a little more. There was a parallel effort at the time with Raidguild.
>"We were finding other devs in the space and reaching out to them. The Moloch grant got some devs from MolochDAO involved.
>
>It was the 3 of us, Raul and maybe one other. A couple random contributors who did stuff. Ameen helped us for sure. He gave us a lot of feedback on how it worked. It kind of kept rolling on top of itself like that." - Dekan
After DAOhaus v1 was done and it got a little traction, it was the only option in the space supporting Moloch.
> "Aragon had done a fork of Moloch called Dandelion. Metacartel Ventures was around." - Dekan
#### DAOhaus DAO & Community
Around August 2020, the decision was made to spin DAOhaus off into its own community and its own DAO.
“At that point we decided to spin DAOhaus off to its own community and its own DAO. In 2020 I think. Right before we launched the token. There was a small group of us — basically I talked to Metacartel. Lets focus on a product of some sort. DAOhaus is a great one to use because we use it. " - Dekan"
#### Token Launch
"Its getting interest and traction lets launch a token. We’re not going to do it like a crazy VC round, lets see if the community will support us. Founders wont get a huge amount of tokens, we’ll just keep it community-centric. That actually got us about 200K when we first launched that. Cool, we can definitely build out the rest of V2 and do some new things.” - Dekan
#### First CCO
First CCO was Sep of 2020. I had just started, was not aprt of the original discussions around the idea of developing a CCO or how it would work. I was given an opoprtunity to contribute to the CCO itself (because of in RG) I was confused about how it could work and dug into and remember felt veyr inspired by it and interested in the mechanisms that were being created. Felt ocnfident in those mechanisms as ap erson putting capital in now. Pretty similar to CCO mechanism now. Without yeeter -
put in tribute. Put in XDAI, request Loot shares back at “declared” proportion at the time. Proposal passes. Somebody would get your proposal through - which was the handful of core team members at the time - some number of days later it would pass and execute. If they knew who you were - RG, Metacartel or immediate connection.
Your DAI would be in the treasury. You could rage quit it if you wanted. The transmutations were faster - each month - more risk, team was less established. Every month there were transmutations - the DAI would flow into our core contributor DAO from the CCO DAO - then from there into each of the circles subdaos. We were basically only doing Retroactive compensation at the time - we didn’t call it that - but we would request from each of the circles we contributed to. Was 500K or 250K raise.
#### Gnosis Migration
December 2020 "Milestones? A big one was moving off of mainnet - right around December of 2020. Gas prices for the first time were really starting to get higher. We were getting into the 40 gwei range. OMG that’s so high. Forced us to recognize the cost of a DH type moloch dao proposal type, because of the assurances it creates because of distribution of power and requires multiple transactions was getting ver expesnive. Decided it was an existential threat to communities to use DH. We needed a lower cost solution. Ultimately we decided - there weren’t htat many options at hte time. Polygon didn’t exist. Rollups weren’t on radar. XDai now called Gnosis had been going for 6 months, maybe a year at the time. We decided to move our own operations over there." - Spencer
#### DAOhaus v2 January 2021
Jord Joins the team.
#### CCO2 - February 2021
Raised just over $1 million
#### MCON September 2021
#### CCO3 - February 2022
750 ETH @ $3000 ETH price (at the time) = 2.25mil$ ish.
Initiated @ ETHDenver 2022
That really kicked off some new things. Community bootstrapping:https://hackmd.io/@Dekan/S1E1tvEs9
### A Change in Narrative
In 2021 the DAO narrative changed, compromising on the additional overhead of onchain governance became much more popular. The landscape was growing to be more inclusive and the DAO narrative was to leverage more mainstream adoption which in turn gave greater funding opportunities. DAOhaus mainly missed this boat (opportunity) completely, our focus continued to be in experimentation with on chain governance and with continuing to build out of this monolithic DAO platform. DAOhaus bet on the number of web3 natives growing but that didn’t happen as planned, instead web2.5 natives started coming in.
### Challenges & Issues
**Issues with Funding**
Funding has been a challenge for the DAOhaus team. Being community funded, compensation for work is funded from one community raise to the next. Over a million dollars in community funding from the sale of HAUS was raised, but not without significant overhead. A dedicated team continues to work on the next round of funding after raising enough funds from the previous round of funding. Most of the time, there is about 6 months of guaranteed runway at any given time.
**Issues with Compensation**
The Daohaus team has battled with different compensation models for their core builders. When funding was abundant, burn rate increased and focus decreased, while also gaining great talent and commitment. When narrowing it down to delivery based compensation, the team gained focus and predictable burn rate, but lost longer term commitment.
**Issues with Monetization**
Monetization has been an important discussion from the beginning, with several interesting mechanics and app ideas that DAOhaus would be able to leverage. While the overarching desire has been to organically grow the user base with a free to use core product, how to implement for-profit experiments has been a challenge. Being able to balance the focus on these two seperate and important areas is something that is periodically being discussed with the core team. The bigger vision would be to continue to provide a free open source protocol and build focused for profit experiments that bring in income.
**Issues with long-term strategy**
Being a part of a rapidly changing market, long-term stratgey within the DAO has not been the main focus. Instead the emphasis was on experimentation and emergence. Although this strategy was really valuable in growing the team and honing in on the DAOhaus mission, the transition to a unified vision of the future has been a challenge.
**Issues with HAUS**
Finding utility for the haus token has been an issue. HAUS has been very useful for daily operations and has its bright spots as a fundraising tool. Besides market speculation, unfortunatelty, it has not brought value back to long-term supporters through it (neither with governance power or market value).
**Issues with Transparency**
Although DAOhaus is building in open source, most of the internal collaboration of the team is hidden. The desire is to get better at communicating the ops side of things to the public and to supporters.
**Market Research**
Instead of focusing on market research, pmf, and vc funding, the main focus has been in creating more tools to make on chain governance more accessible. Going forward putting more attention on market research will be beneficial to open up for more opportunities for future projects like creating cohorts in a DAOhaus labs-like experience.
### New Opportunity
On the bright side of things, DAOhaus is moving forward. Using the challenges and mistakes as raw material for learning and innovation. DAOhaus has added a ton of value to the DAO space, while maintaining integrity throughout it all! And DAOhaus ships!
The greater communities overwhelming feedback is that they love DAOhaus. With a ton of traction and good vibes, moving through challenges will be motivating.
The DAO narrative is shifting back, the benefits of onchain governance is being rediscovered by many of the new users in the dao space and new solutions that leverage the best of both worlds are beginning to get traction, with DAOhaus siiting in a perfect position for this.
Over the last 4 months Daohaus has honed in with focus and shipped v3 of DAOhaus, with a new emphasis on an open, flexible and composible core set of tools for developers. A new longer term strategy that entangles the HAUS token, open source core, and independent monetization initiatives is evolving. This gives DAOhaus a new opportunity to prioritize and overcome the issues at hand.
### Timeline & Major Transitions
- Bear market adaptations
- We did 3 raises on [date], [date2], [date3]. The amounts were [amount1], [amount2], [amount3] respectively. The price of Eth around that time was: [price1], [price2], [price3].
With raise 3, with prices near their peak, we had what seemed like over a year of runway. Within a few months of price dropping, we realized we had only 2 months and that if we cut our expenses drastically. We were spending [amount] per month. We cut that to 70,000.
- How did DAOhaus evolve? History. (UI369 will ask Dekan)

## Membership & Governance
In a Moloch DAO, membership is permissioned and governance power is non-transferable. The only way to become a member is with the DAO’s approval.
Governance power in Moloch DAOs takes two forms:
- **Voting rights** – how much your voice matters in whether proposals pass or fail
- **Economic stake**, aka exit rights or “ragequit” – a direct claim on a proportion of the assets in the DAO treasury
- **Governance power** is represented by shares, of which there are two types. Full shares represent both voting rights and economic stake, while loot shares represent only economic stake.
Any address that has at least one share and/or loot is considered a member of the DAO. A single member can have multiple shares and/or loot.

## Growth & Recruitment
### Staking for Shares
When you use a Moloch v2 or v3 contract for your DAO, and you use DAOhaus platform to manage it, you have easy access to the "shares" distinction to distribute power among your dao members.
A share is like a vote, people with more shares have more votes. Votes are required to pass proposals, so shares translate to proposal passing power.
By setting up a "Stake for Shares" system, you allow people to tribute tokens in exchange for shares. This could lead to a plutocratic power-buy system, but it doesn't have to. Each tribute is a proposal that needs to be passed by the other members of the DAO.
- DAOhaus currently requires a 20 HAUS stake to join. New members receive 200 shares. Starting in 2021, a Coordinape system was set up. Active members are given 100 points to assign to their fellow contributor based on their perceived contributions. The proportional points are then used to divvy up 600 HAUS each month. These HAUS can be used to purchase new shares at a rate of 10 shares per 1 HAUS.

### Bounty Board & Task Volunteers
At DAOhaus we've kept a bounty board on the [Github website repo](https://github.com/HausDAO/daohaus-website/issues) with some tasks that seem good for a new person to pick up. This gives people a path to interact/contribute.
The bounty board doesn't have to be comprehensive. It seems to accomplish 80% of its recruitment purpose just by having a few 'easy wins' on the board. When an enthusiastic new contributor comes along, they can knock out the tasks, signalling to the team that 1) They have someone willing to take initiative and 2) they should add some new tasks to the bounty board.
### Open Forum Conversations
- Weekly at 11AM Pacific DAOhaus throws a "HAUS Party" - this is a 1 hour conversation about different DAO-related topics. Members of the audience are always welcome to come on stage and contribute.
These open forums can give your DAO a recruiting, skillshare, marketing and community building benefit.

## Rage & Sage Development Strategy
Rage and Sage are modes of focus used in project management that DAOhaus uses in software development. They are strategies to organize and focus attention during the different phases of development projects.
Although these phases are being used in software development by DAOhaus, these patterns can be useful in many different aspects of creation in any DAO.
***We Rage to build the machine! Then Sage to dial it in...***
**Rage**: In the Rage Phase, developers are testing new ideas, tools, and processes at a fast pace. This phase can sparked from a problem or issue that has come to light, waiting for a skillful solution to be implemented.
All the major technical implementation questions are answered in this phase, large configuration and architectural issues are solved, and flowcharts and other document-based planning tools are created.
Rages allow a team to see if their preconceptions of how something will work is grounded in reality.
**Sage**: During the Sage Phase of the work flow, a developer or small team of developers focus on details and quality. Slowing down and taking the time to optimize for quality, assures that the code written becomes a load-bearing bastion that can easily support other projects atop it.
Saging allows a team to craft with quality in mind.
> Raging is about getting something to work, Saging is about getting something right.
**Buddy System**
At DAOhaus a couple of the members of the DAO created the Buddy System in an effort to help new contributors get up to speed with how things work in the DAO.
This works by pairing a more seasoned member of the DAO with a newer member. This lets the newer contributor get oriented, ask questions, and receive support. The veteran member benefits from the added accountability, skill sharing and as they say, "to teach is to learn".
The primary focus of this Buddy System is relationship and trust building. An intentional, safe, and consistent space to share experiences, learn from one another, expand on shared interests, and collaborate on projects.
Another important aspect of the Buddy System is accountability. Providing structure in a system like a DAO, that inherently lacks a lot of it—it is beneficial to have a trusted person who will provide honest, respectful and clear feedback on ideas and outputs so that the work being contributed to the DAO is of high quality and fidelity. This provides a more seamless and efficient route to being properly compensated for the value that is being provided.
Although this Buddy System is centered toward pairing a new member with a veteran member of the DAO, there is nothing in the way of creating more intentional and consistent connections with others members of the DAO that you vibe with. The essence of this Buddy System focuses on accountability, trust, and human to human connection—allowing each person in the relationship to thrive as an individual and as a contributing member of the DAO.
The Buddy System is a great tactic for getting new contributors up-to-speed, identifying synergies, helping each other grow, bridging silos in the DAO, and identifying gaps in our individual and collective understanding. On the cultural side, the Buddy System cultivates conviviality, offers checks and balances to ensure ongoing cultural alignment to make sure we are building the right things in the right ways in the right order for the right reasons.
**Basic Structure for Providing Consistency and Building Trust within the Buddy System:**
* Daily calls, 4x per week.
* Allowing space to connect at a human level in ways that would not always be possible in meeting spaces.
* Ask each other for feedback and have reflexive conversations about DAO priorities.
* Extend a direct offer to ask questions about how the DAO and sub-DAOs work. (Veteran DAO members)
* Collaborate in identifying gaps, and then working together to document them for the benefit of the whole DAO.
* Share divergent experiences and cross-disciplinary training.
* Challenge each other to get explicit about where we are personally trying to get to, in relation to where the organization is trying to go.

**Decision Making Processes**
## Consensus vs Consent Based Decision making
**Consensus** is trying to get everybody to agree about everything before making a decision. This could include agreeing as a group to grant some people decision making authority. Consensus is not nimble because it requires everybody to agree.
Pros: Super easy to implement without any documentation. Cons: Wildly inefficient over a certain team size, can lead to power silos, watered down creativity, gridlock, and the most vocal or persuasive individuals deciding most courses of action. Often devolves into oligarchy. See also: Anarchy
**Consent** is a subtle modification of Consensus. It doesn't require everybody to 'agree' - it requires there to be 'no objections'. If there are objections, they can be addressed and integrated until Consent is reached.
The Consent model allows for more forward movement without the perceived need to have everybody sign off on a decision. The challenge emerges with decision visibility & objection handling.
## Share-weighted Voting & Tribute for Shares
DAOhaus uses share-weighted voting, meaning that every member can vote, but not every member's vote counts equally - instead each member receives 1 vote for each share they have.
Shares can be granted by the DAO according to some agreed-upon system. Ideally that system would be representative of a member's contribution & understanding of the DAO's mission and domain. This helps with supporting [Anticapture]() principles.
From late 2021 to late 2022, Warcamp has used Coordinape to help it allocate shares. Each month, members distribute shares to other members according to their perceived contributions. These votes are used to distribute a proportional amount of a 600 HAUS token allocation. These HAUS tokens can then be "tributed" to the DAO in exchange for shares, at a rate of 10:1.
In this way, shares are given to active members who are perceived to be making a contribution.
