Blizzard Takes Legal Action against Vanilla WoW's Biggest Private Server

Home News MMO World Of Warcraft Blizzard is taking legal action against the largest Vanilla WoW private server

By Angus Morrison published 7 April 16

Blizzard has launched legal proceedings against World of Warcraft's largest and, in some ways, the best private server, Nostalrius. Nostalrius is an Blizz-like Vanilla WoW server (in PvP and PvE varieties)-it mimics the original World of Warcraft (opens in new tab) as closely as possible The key difference is its capacity to accommodate approximately 11,000 concurrent players. It's an amazing achievement that will shut down on April 10.

"Yesterday, we were sent a letter by US and French lawyers, representing Blizzard Entertainment. We are now in the process of preparing for trial [sic] against our hosting company OVH in less than one week," the dev team writes. (opens in a new tab). grnonline.info "This signifies the de facto end of Nostalrius in its current form."

It's a tragedy to me, made worse because Nostalrius isn't even a foot. Unlike some private servers, Nostalrius never charged a penny but World of Warcraft is ActiBlizzard's property and that's when it comes to the legal aspect goes.

Nostalrius is an archive of the past A beautiful, nostalgic record of what a living world used to look like. It's a museum-quality piece that was created by passionate fans with no official counterpart. The Nostalrius devs haven't quite abandoned the project, however.

The post continues "We will still publicly provide everything necessary to set up your own Nostalrius," "Today is also the day where Nostalrius will become a community-driven service in the truest sense of the word, as we will release the source code and anonymized player data (encrypting personal account data), so the community as a whole will decide the form of the future of Nostalrius. If you would like us to do so, we will be in the background but will not be in the lead.

They also petition Blizzard (opens new tab) to ensure the survival of the server. At the time of writing, there are 20,000 signatures. Barring a miraculous change of heart, however, Nostalrius will disappear at 23:00 CET+1 on April 10.
