# Open Sustain Technology ## 2025 4 December ### Attendees - Tobias - Salam - Richard - Pierre ### Agenda - Check-ins - Richard: Gave a talk, that's about it. - Salam: Updated the dashboard for the open analytics, improved the UI. Added an outline to differentiate the different tabs. Saw some TODOs on the Discord, I'll get to those today or later. - Tobias: Interested in other suggestions and feedback on the dashboard. I updated the organizational labels. We can filter organization plots, or ranking for countries (US, EU...). We also have growth and stars. New contributor! - Pierre: Repo maintenance, bandwidth is low - Finances from Brazil trip (Richard) - Confirm Richard expenses - Tobias and Pierre confirm. - Confirm Alex expenses - Tobias and Pierre confrim - Add note on finances to the Constitution? (Richard) - See https://github.com/protontypes/meeting-notes/blob/main/governance.md - Richard will add a PR noting that all emails should CC tobias and richard for GNOME, as a backup. - Paper: - Can we make everyone first author? (Tobias) - Richard: I can try. Also, use https://credit.niso.org/ - Outreach (Tobias) - We have two main things that we can release: the dashboard and the paper. - How do we release it? - How do we get it into Guardian? - Most people need easy messages. How do we make it not confusing? - Richard: The Mapping paper we just made will be released on Jan 1, I think; the journal article will take longer. I dno't know how we time that with the dashboard. - Tobias: We could plan for a new report next year, or end of next year. We could focus on the government implosion in the US and how that affects OSS, or on particular parts of the database (biodiversity, etc). We could ask these questions in the paper, or in the blogpost, or both, and ask for funding for this publicly. - In this paper, we should ask future questions for futue papers. A good research paper is asking new questions. - Richard: I think that would be a good fit for the Jan 15th journal. - Pierre: Have a "Tell us we matter" slide or questionairre on the website - Pierre: Have a slido set up for us to share after talks to get bfeedback and other ideas - We also should give talks at subsets - hydrology, atmospheric science, etc - Andrew's work: - Andrew said he can work on the back-end side, I suggested he had more about usage data. Star growth, issue growth, etc. Dependents, dependencies. - Dashboard - We could replace the homepage with the starburst? - Pierre: I can work on searh and keywords. - Will talk with Andrew about it, but bandwidth low. - Plan OST meeting for FOSDEM - Onboarding ## 2025 6 November ### Agenda - _Add your items here_ ## 2025 16 October - Andrew - Chris - Pierre - Richard ### Agenda - Pierre's new tool for link checking - Automatically makes a PR - As long as there is a review step, that's good - https://github.com/Pierre-VF/open-sustainable-technology/actions/workflows/maintain_listing.yaml - Suggest splitting it up into smaller PRs, looks very useful - Status of paper - Chris will add some stuff - Andrew has this: https://ost.ecosyste.ms/projects/dependencies - Richard worked on Intro and Context - Science citations workshop from Andrew - A new project is coming next year funded by Schmidt Futures - Should be very powerful for OST - Chris met some people at Northwest Environment Conf (?) - Was on a podcast - Video would be good for us! ## 2025 7 Aug - Alice - Chris - Pierre - Richard - Tobias ### Agenda - Paper got accepted at https://symposium.openforumeurope.org/#programme - Plots would be good. - Pierre is willing to help with GitHub - November, paper due mid-October (12 October: Deadline for submission of completed paper) - This is: Presentation of Ongoing Research: 6-10 page summary, abstract of 300 words maximum - Let's have best practices in the paper, too (or at least gather them for a later paper, if that's too big a job) - How will this work towards a larger paper - Richard: - Going to spend 1-2 hours before next Thursday to spec out the general size and shape of the paper, and will set up a working tool for the paper - Tobias: - Will work on analysis, start creating a dashboard for plots. Would be good to show in this conference / on the website. - Will work on the dashboard - Pierre: - Working with Tobias on the plots - wireframes? - and waiting for his concept. ## 2025 2 Jul - Tobias Augspurger - Michael - Chris Harris - Pierre VF - Andrew - Richard Littauer? We should motivate the open source community in this area to add Good First Issue labels to their issues. 2. We should use a consistent hashtag in our post and motivate people to use the hashtag if they talk about the project or closed an issue. The hashtag could be measured across GitHub but also social media platforms. We could use #climatetriage but also some other GitHub hashtag. 3. I will write a blog post draft for OpenSource.org that we can sign and share together. OpenSource.org helped a lot in the past in doing marketing for the project. 4. We should try to motivate some Open Source "Influence" people to share our content. 5. We should set up a chat room or something similar where we guide people and match them according to their skills to some open source project. The OpenSustain.tech community can help this people to find good project to participate. ``` - How do we ensure githubs 'important' considered OS projects align with the ones from OST - Github has some OKR's developed with https://speedandscale.com/ - [x] redoing the plots from the old report with new backend data - Michael takes lead - Do appointment with Josh and Tobi - Will be used for the github climate week in SF - What plots do we need? - [ ] 2025 report? - [x] Governance doc - https://github.com/protontypes/meeting-notes/blob/main/governance.md - not perfect yet, not everything included, but it is a start - [x] Issue about that we need a process to enable humans to update metadata -> Pierre creates Issue - Andrew - Took over numfocus hackathon (innovation sprint) -> trying to get some machine learning people to use ost data as training data and to classify new entries - Where is any additional data about OST projects stored? What is the central data store? - Tobi - Names for people working on ost - Investigation - Data Mining - Ecosystem Study - Analysics - Community Growth - Ecosystem Support - Advocacy - We should be aware of the signaling of the names - OST projects are 90% for developers, and ~10% with a nice frontend which also ca - We can not show historical data/data growth at the moment because we do not have any historical data ## 2025 March 6 ### Participants: - Richard Littauer - Andrew Nesbitt - Tobias Augspurger - Chris Harris - Michael Scheiwiller Secretary: Richard. (Unless someone else wants to do this?) ### Agenda and Notes - Introduction to new members and attendees - Report back from action items from last meeting - Richard: - [x] Save to repository, make next agenda - [ ] Document about media outlets - [ ] Write Gunner - [~] Paper status - Andrew - NumFOCUS Energy, Climate, and Environment Innovation Sprint - The idea is to leverage existing curated datasets (e.g., Tobi’s list of over 2,000 human-curated climate-related tools), along with data from sources like OpenAlex, GitHub, MOSS, and Ecosyste.ms. - https://funds.ecosyste.ms/ is progressing, can potentially setup an OST fund - https://github.com/open-energy-transition/open-esd-analysis - Tobi - We are a DPG now \o/ - Still need to suss out what the benefits are. - GitHub was asked if they will pay for the flight to CA; probably not. - Chris Harris could go and seems keen! - [ ] Chris, let us know - [ ] Tobi, follow back up with Paul about flights? - Docs with skillset per person - Issue about the 'manifesto' website - Help on governance editing - Michael - [x] Add ananlytics to Climate Triage - Finance report - GNOME: Still has $10k. - Still have $9500 in the climate fund. - Media report: - Anything we should know about that needs to be covered in this meeting? - We have Bluesky and Mastodon and OST - https://bsky.app/profile/opensustaintech.bsky.social - https://mastodon.social/@opensustaintech - Doesn't make sense to make an org LinkedIn - [ ] Richard write up about this - [ ] RIchard: Talk to Stuart about posts - Governance questions - https://github.com/protontypes/open-sustainable-technology/issues/932 - https://communityrule.info/create/ - Goal for this meeting: - Where we are - Values: Goals - https://report.opensustain.tech/chapters/principles.html - Openness - Transparency and Traceability - Trust - Collaborative - Localized - Decentralized - Accountable - Decisions - Lazy consensus - Defaults to Tobi making decisions - Processes - Asyncronous conversation - Pull requests end up with Tobi merging - - Structure - Where we want tobe - Values - Decisions - Processes - Structure - Governance Doc - Set up a Group for reviewing climate PRs (and only that!) - Set up roles for the meetings: - Secretary - Note-taking - Facilitator - Leads the meetings - These will defualt to Richard if he is there, otherwise don't have a meeting without choosing someon - Finance: If you ahve been to the last three meetings, you get a vote for how anything over $500 is spent - Clear majority 75%+ of quorum - In three months - June 6- check back in with what we need - Code of Conduct committee - Who is on the committee - Richard will set up a govenrance doc, and we can make PRS, which will need 100% sign-off fomr the people at the last three meetings - Tag the explicit people that is relevant - Sign off is an explicit text message that shows agreement. ## 2025 February 6 **Participants:** - Tobias - Michael - Pierre - Richard Secretary: Richard **Agenda and Notes:** - HackMD? Yes? - Yes. - [ ] Richard will save to the repository afterwards/ - [Richard] OST Paper https://docs.google.com/document/d/12jn8Xfhkf6IMUa_dhkIO9Qw1VPU0F_pkUgKBQuJ2WkE/edit?usp=sharing - Can we put it on Zenodo? - That'll be a good part of the paper - Pierre can do this work for the Zenodo - Richard wants to make sure that we don't step on Andrew's toes and find a way to do all of his work, too ,in this dataset bucket - Could be enriched with Andrews data, but Pierre has a basic plugin that will work - Richard: Work with Pierre and Andrew on this together. - Tobias: We have an issue for this, could do more: https://github.com/protontypes/open-sustainable-technology/issues/798 - We already have a DOI - [Pierre] Updates on the communications strategy - Email list? - [ ] Richard: Reach out to Gunner about a way to find shared goals - [ ] All: Write down our conferences we're going to (where?) - [ ] Richard: Make a document about our media outlets - [Tobias] Climate Triage Responsibility discussion - We need someone in charge for climate triage - We need analytics – is this even important? - We need to lay out these different projects - [Tobias] US Agency analytics - We could get some publicity and traction off of this. - We are the only ones who can do this fast enough, we think. - Can we do this with ecosyste.ms alone? It has no history, just a state... but we can talk about this. Would have to look at trends over time. - [Richard] Prep hack.md for next meeting
