# CS Club Board Elections Spring 2023 # Candidate Statements ## President #### Ian Hayes ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/7pjdU84.jpg) Dear fellow Computer Science Students and CS club members, My name is Ian Hayes, and I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Computer Science club president. As a senior college student, I have been involved in numerous club events and spent considerable time in the department, both to unwind in the lounge and to also assist other students whenever possible. Throughout my time in both the club and in the major, I have come to appreciate the importance of maintaining a balance between work and fun. As we all know, computer science can be quite a challenging field that requires focus, dedication, and hard work. However, it's equally essential to take time off to recharge and engage in activities that allow us to blow off some steam and to just have some fun instead of stressing. That's why, if elected president, I plan to make work/fun balance my primary platform concept. If elected club president, I will work towards organizing events that not only offer opportunities to learn new skills or practice with existing ones, but also offer more of the fun activities we’ve had in the past, such as mixers, game nights, and tournaments. In taking a page from my colleagues book as well, I intend to also examine the possibility of doing more opportunities akin to that of the Hackathon done in the Fall 2022 semester, as I feel such an opportunity is a perfect balance between work and fun and would love for more people to have a chance to participate. I will strive to create a positive club culture that encourages members to pursue their passions while also maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Additionally, I will be available to support and mentor members who need help, whether academically or otherwise. In conclusion, I am eager to serve as your president and bring positive changes to the club. I look forward to discussing my vision and hearing your feedback during the campaign and voting period. Thank you for considering my candidacy, and I hope to earn your vote. #### Malcolm Garbutt ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/hEph3Nl.jpg) Greetings Hornets! My name is Malcolm Garbutt and I am humbly vying to be your next Computer Science Club President! I am a 20 year old sophomore from Philadelphia majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Entrepreneurship. During my time serving you as “Mr. Computer Science Club” during the 2022-2023 school year, I advocated for students and all members of the club, helping grow outreach and engagement. I did this through hosting several events throughout the year such as game nights and mixers, as well as through managing the social media page. As your CS Club president, I will continue these efforts, taking whatever initiatives are needed based on the expressed needs and wants of members. For example, I would love to implement peer mentorship relationships for the everyone who wants one in the club, but the main challenge for this last year was participation. I hope to accomplish this and many more things if elected as your President. Thank you! ## Treasurer #### Chara Hinds ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/QVU2ahP.jpg) Dear fellow members of the Computer Science Club, my name is Chara Hinds, and I am thrilled to run for the Treasurer position of the 2023-2024 board. We have a makerspace, but many of the students are not utilizing this space because there is a lack of focus on it. We should have events that have the makerspace play a significant role and we should spread information about the makerspace to students so they use their creativity to create something incredible. In addition, we should upgrade the makerspace with new technologies or create a whole new space that can be used by our students for projects and experimentation. ## Events Coordinator #### Immanuel Fowler ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/REfxdaI.jpg) Hello, my name is Immanuel Fowler. I believe that the computer science students here at DSU are truly exceptional and deserve a platform that matches their brilliance. As Events Coordinator, I would be able to shine a light on every computer science major's inner genius by reaching out to my industry connections and providing students with amazing hands-on opportunities. Some opportunities I want to provide to students are being able to give your own TED talk, exclusive internship opportunities with tech companies, and hands on access to a cutting edge makerspace lab with new technology and a renovated atmosphere. #### Lillie Hunter ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/ymFuRS3.png) Hello Everyone! My name is Lillie Hunter. I am a Junior majoring in Information Technology and I am currently serving as your Events Coordinator for the Computer Science Club. I am excited to announce that I will be running for the position of Events Coordinator for the 2023-2024 school year. For the past 2 years, you have given me the opportunity to host and plan social gatherings for students in the department. It has truly been a pleasure seeing everyone’s engagement during game nights, workshops, and conferences hosted this semester and past semesters. This position has not only shaped my ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances but it has also encouraged me to speak my mind and confidently communicate with others. If selected, my objective is to increase community collaboration. While the Computer Science Club has found great success in event turnout and participation, it is also important to reach out to other organizations and clubs on campus for additional support. Due to factors such as the pandemic, we have grown accustomed to promoting our social activities mainly to people within the STEM field. I would like to open up these opportunities to all students. My goal is to reach out to various organizations on campus and work as a unit to hold off-campus outings, offer community service opportunities, host networking events, and much more. By putting this plan into action, we can recover the excitement and commitment to expanding the CS club’s outreach and influence on campus. It’s beneficial to students who want to share their activities with friends outside of the department and builds acceptance within the club itself. I hope to represent you and the department in the best way possible. I wish the best of luck to all of my fellow peers running for office. Thank you for your support, and remember: “You can NEVER go wrong with picking a Lillie!” ## Miss Computer Science #### Jordaynn Alawode ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/zvpyDbd.jpg) Dear members of the Computer Science Club, I am Jordaynn Alawode, and I am running for the position of Miss Computer Science. As a computer science enthusiast and a dedicated member of this club, I am excited to have the opportunity to represent you and advocate for your interests. I believe that it is important to foster collaboration and encourage knowledge sharing among members. I will organize events and activities that allow members to connect, share ideas, and work together towards common goals. I am confident that with your support, I can be an effective and passionate Miss Computer Science. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to serving you in this role. #### Lillie Hunter ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/ymFuRS3.png) Hello Everyone! My name is Lillie Hunter. My name is Merasia, I’m an incoming sophomore majoring in Computer Science. I am pleased to announce my candidacy for Miss Computer Science for the 2023-2024 academic year. Along with majoring in computer science, I am also an athlete on the women’s track and field team. You may recognize me from the CS events hosted this year and if elected, I will continue to prioritize and be in attendance of these events. In addition, I will encourage those inside and outside the major to participate as well! When I first started coding, I felt lost when it came to progressing my skills outside of the classroom, something that we all know is crucial in this major. What helped me was being able to reach out to people that I trusted to ask for help or resources. As Miss Computer Science I want to be a known face for others to come to. My main mission as Miss Computer Science would be to create a more nurturing environment where we can express our challenges inside and outside the major and find ways to address these issues together. If given the opportunity for this position, I plan to bring forth ideas like collective study sessions and coding challenges to help practice skills outside of the classroom. I believe my time management skills, discipline, and healthy balance of school and leisure will allow me to take on the responsibility of this position while being a student athlete. I have really grown a passion and drive for computer science and would love the opportunity to do more outside of the classroom. Thank you for reading my statement and I am looking forward to being your next Miss Computer Science! #### Sydney Brown ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/86RRmbT.jpg) Hello Computer Science Students! My name is Sydney Brown and I am from Detroit, Michigan. I am running for the position of Ms. Computer Science for the 2023-2024 Academic Year because I am passionate about the field and want to make a positive impact on the club and its members. As someone who is heavily involved in the tech community and constantly looking for ways to improve my skills and knowledge, I believe that I would be an excellent fit for this role. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have also been actively involved in various extracurricular clubs such as NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), Computer Science Club, and NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). As the Freshman Corresponding Secretary for the SGA, I have gained valuable experience in communication and organization, which I believe will be assets in this position. My vision for the Computer Science Club is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where members can learn, grow, and collaborate with each other. I believe that by fostering a sense of community and providing opportunities for members to develop their skills and pursue their interests, we can make the club a hub for innovation and creativity on campus. If elected, I am committed to working hard and advocating for the needs and interests of the members of the club. I look forward to bringing my passion for computer science and my leadership skills to this position and helping to make the Computer Science Club the best it can be. ## Mister Computer Science #### Immanuel Fowler ### ![](https://i.imgur.com/49LKGtt.jpg) Hello, my name is Immanuel Fowler. My name is Sameer Patel, a sophomore in Computer Science, and I am happy to announce that I will be running for Mister Computer Science! Over the past two years, many of you have seen me around the lounge as I’ve hung out and gotten to know quite a lot of you, and many have also sought my help as a tutor over the past year. I care enormously about seeing everyone achieving their goals and constructing a bright future ahead of college, and it would be an honor to represent the entirety of the CS Club throughout the 2023-2024 year as I represent my platform of “See Everyone Succeed”. As a tutor, I analyze the way students learn and notice the potential they have for their future. However, that potential is usually prevented from growing due to the overwhelming accountabilities they are given at school, home, and work. The stress behind these responsibilities creates an imbalance between productivity and enjoyment, affecting the students' overall performance. As Mr. Computer Science, I want to help students build an equilibrium between work and life no matter how many responsibilities they must endure in life, so they can have time to train their performance and develop the future they want to see. Students also may not see their prospects while others do, and pay more attention to areas that will not make their potential useful enough and waste time investing in that area. To handle this matter, I will encourage others to attend programs that can help expose them to specific fields and have them realize their potential and pursue the path. In closing, I am anxiously thrilled to become your Mr. Computer Science and help students find the areas they will enjoy working in and become their best selves. I look forward to having any conversations or answering questions regarding my crusade. Thank you for your support and wish the best of luck to the other candidates for Mr. Computer Science.
