# Interpreting e-mailed grade reports
This is your guide to interpreting e-mailed grade progress reports. These progress reports are e-mailed every Sunday and are meant to help you keep track of the recorded grades we have for you in the course.
## Interpreting your grade report
The e-mail you receive will look something like this:

The format may slightly change as the semester progresses. We will do our best to keep this page updated, but even if your grade report looks slightly different, the information below will still apply.

### Explanations of specific sections
#### Late days
The late days used are calculated based on submission times on Gradescope. If you had an assignment extension due to a documented special circumstance, you should have a Gradescope extension for that assignment, which automatically means that those extra days are not counted towards your late days.
#### Drills
Drills are graded based on completion. Even though you only need to complete 80% of the drills to get full credit for the drills score for the class, the grade report includes information for all the drills that have been completed in the course so far.
#### Homeworks/projects/mini quizzes
Your percentages for each assignment and assessment are included here. They should match your point totals on Gradescope. If we do not have a submission for you for a specific assignment, that score will be 0%.
#### Skills areas
These are provided for your information on how well you are mastering the learning goals for the course, and are based on the homework/project rubrics. If you have earned 95+% of the points possible for a skill area, your note will read "fantastic!". 90-95% will read "good", 75-90% will read "would benefit from attention", and below 75% will read "needs improvement." Note that not having an assignment turned in may bring these percentages down substantially.
:::warning
Especially for the first few grade reports, some skills areas may change significantly from report to report because there were not very many points allocated to those areas in the assignments so far.
:::
See below for how these skills areas factor into computing your final grade.
### How final grades are calculated
Please refer to the [syllabus](https://hackmd.io/@cs111/syllabus-s22#Course-grades) for information on the weighting of different assignments/assessments in the course. In particular, pay attention to how the skills areas are used to compute grades on the boundary.
:::warning
Remember that Milda takes a more nuanced view when computing final grades than just computing one final number and matching it to a letter. For instance, she looks at your improvement over time and also checks if there was just one assignment pulling your grade down. For this reason, the grade reports do not include a prediction of your final letter grade in the class.

## Reporting discrepancies
Sometimes, our record-keeping may not match your record-keeping. It is your job to review the grade report and alert Milda of any discrepancies **within two weeks of receiving the e-mail with the discrepancy,** so that we can fix it. Before contacting Milda, however, please review these common questions:
***I have not received my grade report this week.***
Possible resolutions: 1) Check your spam folder from an email from `noreply@brown.edu`; 2) it is still Sunday, the grade report may not have been generated and sent yet, so wait until the end of the day; 3) check on Ed or review in-class announcements in case a grade report is not being sent this week.
***My homework % doesn't match what I see on Gradescope!***
Sometimes, homework submissions are split into multiple Gradescope assignments. Your e-mailed percentage takes all of these scores into account (for example, HW 2 had two submissions: the main submission worth 70 points, and the SRC submission worth 10 points. The e-mailed percentage was calculated as the sum of the scores out of 80).
***I don't think I should have missed [specific points] on [specific assignment]***
Please submit a regrade request for a specific assignment on Gradescope. Note that, until the regrade request is processed by the TAs, your homework score on the e-mailed reports will still be based on your old score. It may take up to a week after your regrade request is completed for the new score to show up on the e-mailed report.
***The report shows me using more late days than I think I did!***
Double-check *all* of the submissions for the homework. If a homework has both a written and a programming part as different submissions, we consider the latest submission when calculating late days.
***I turned in a homework, but the report is showing a score of 0!***
If you were using a non-Brown e-mail account (such as a RISD e-mail) at the start of the semester, follow [these instructions](https://help.gradescope.com/article/ipjyg27lg5-student-merge-accounts) to merge the accounts so that your scores from the first assignments get pulled in. We only consider the Brown e-mail that we get from Banner when computing your scores.
If you had to resubmit your work after the deadline, the resubmission may not have been graded, which shows up as a 0 on Gradescope. Submit a regrade request on Gradescope so that the TAs get flagged to grade the assignment.
***Can you tell me what my final grade in the course will be, based on these percentages? OR My skills area says "needs improvement", can I still get an A in the course?***
See specific sections on final grade calculation above for these questions. As a rule, we will not know what your final grade is until all assignments and assessments are in, because of the procedures outlined above.
***I've done 7 drills, but the report only shows 6 out of the first 6! (or similar questions)***
We may not have pulled in the most recent drill, especially if it is due on the Monday after grade reports go out. Check the text "out of the first __" to see how many drills we are currently sending records for.
***I am taking the class S/NC. Why am I still getting specific numbers?***
Milda does not check who is taking the class S/NC until it is time to calculate final grades. During the semester, the grade reports are calculated in the same way for everyone, regardless of S/NC status. You may still find it useful to keep track of your performance in the class using these grade reports, even if you are taking the class S/NC.

If you have reviewed the questions and still have a question about your grade report, email Milda (do not post on Ed or e-mail the TAs or HTAs, because Milda is the only one who handles final grades) and include the following text:

*I have reviewed the "Interpreting Grade Reports" document and verified that my issue was not solved by reading one of the common questions. I confirm that this e-mail is being sent within two weeks of receiving the grade report where the discrepancy first appeared.*
