Online Essentials: Community Building **Activity 1** (in pairs) **STEP 1:** __Discuss the following questions (10 minutes).__ * In your personal or professional life, what communities are you part of? Why and how do you engage with them? * How important do you think community is to learning in online environments? Why do you think so? * Have you been part of an online learning community before? * If yes, successfully so, what elements contributed to its success? * If not (not yet or not successfully so), what things do theoretically contribute to building a learning community online? --- **STEP 2: Report back to other groups (6 people) (7-10 minutes)** --- ## 2. How will you establish teacher presence in your course(s)? EReflect on the elements you've seen in FitFOL2020 so far. * Which have helped establish instructor presence in your opinion? * Can you think of other ways? --- ## 3. How do you define and communicate your approach to pedagogy? ### Activity 2: Teaching Metaphor Gallery Wall (10 mins) **STEP 1:** Reflect on your teaching philosophy towards community building as a part of online learning. (individually 2 minutes) **STEP 2:** Find an image **([click here to open a new page in this resource](https://openeducationalberta.ca/itfol-light/chapter/images/))** that best represents a metaphor for your philosophy towards community building in online courses. You will find an example in the link below. **STEP 3:** Post your image with a brief description of what it represents on **[our collaborative gallery wall linked here](https://padlet.com/erinreid/vy4zo899280u)**. **STEP 4:** Once a few peers have posted, comment on at least one other image. --- ## 4. How will you build community online? ### Group Activity 3: Annotating our Module Chapter (15-20 min.) To demonstrate how you could have your students collaboratively annotate a digital resource of your choice: **Your task**: * Work with a partner. * Watch closely as the instructor demonstrates how to annotate our module chapter using the **[ Hypothesis tool in Moodle](https://moodle.uleth.ca/202002/mod/lti/view.php?id=17553)**. * Ask your partner any of the questions below and type her/ his/ zer / their answer into an annotation. **Questions to comment on:** *1. Which part in the module chapter gave you ideas for your own online course? 2. Which part in the module do you want to learn more about? 3.
