# Solutions for Smart but Struggling Students : The SG Way : Week 3 (03 Oct 2019) Largely based on this webinar (Free for 36hrs per week) https://brightandquirky.com/smart-struggling-students-member/ ## Week 3: How to Help Bright Kids With Learning Differences https://hub.brightandquirky.com/sbss-2019/week-3/ Length of notes indicates how interesting I find the talks.... ### Session 1: What You Need to Know about Dyslexia Dan Peters, Ph.D. Running time: 48:50 * Dysgraphia : sloppy handwriting syndrome, fine motor issues, and issue with connecting the brain to the hand * Dysgraphia can come with dyslexia. However if you have dyslexia, usually you will have dysgraphia * Dyslexia = issue with reading decoding, fluency, reading comprehension, spelling and writing * Dyslexia usually come with pattern of challenges and strength. * Dyslexia Challenges : rote learning, remembering facts, unrelated facts, dates. Procedural & sequencial memory. Auditory processing (hearing words accurately). Visual processing (seeing letters/character accurately). Executive functioning issues that overlap with ADHD. Time management. * Dyslexia Strength : MIND (Dyxlexicadvantage.org). **M = Material Reasoning**; seeing things from multiple sides eg: lego builders, archtecture building and engineering. Reportedly, all 7 wonders of the world had been designed by dyslexic architects. **I = Interconnected Reasoning**. Pattern recognizers, connect the dots and see patterns. See the different ideas, connect the dots and come up with different ideas. Out of the box thinkers. **N=Narrative Reasoning** often story tellers, either through words or pictures. Eg: Roald Dahl is dyslexic. He wrote as he thinks and people end up liking it. Dyslexics often mis-say words and have to go round words and give the context and story, instead of giving straight answer. **D=Dynamic Reasoning** ability to take past and present data points and predict future outcomes. One in three entrepreneurs are dyslexics. Dyslexics are known to be highly intuitive. Help kids reinforce intuition as a thing, help kids learn to explain the process over time. eg: alot of entreprenears can see what needs to be done to succeed, but if they can't convince the stakeholders, funders, employees where they need to go, then they can have a great idea but it won't get executed. * Kids that at bright and make careless mistakes. Actually it can be dyslexia * Help kids find their line of strength in terms of intervention, diagnosis is to help kids get support. * Stealth dyslexics : intervention (Multisensory Approaches : see the words, listen to the words, move your mouth to the words, touch. [Orton Gillingham](https://https://www.ortonacademy.org/resources/what-is-the-orton-gillingham-approach/), [Susan Barton](https://https://www.dys-add.com/), [Association of Education Therapists (the last not so helpful for SG)](https://https://www.aetonline.org/)) * Dyslexia can be due to : Visual processing issues (cannot decode the words/letters correctly), phonological issues (cannot process the word sounds correcting), or visual tracking issues. For efficient intervention, need to screen and assess correctly #### Ideas to implement in SG: * Beware of stealth dyslexia where alot of the kids with IQ>130 think they are dumb due to the classroom experiences. * Explain to them if they have high IQ and dyslexia, which are separate things. * Do not go to school with advocates that are adversarial. * If we use public system for neuropsych assessment, know that it has limitations in that it will not be complete (360 include moods), sometimes even inaccurate, but it should give you the behaviours to work with. ### Session 2: My at Times Wonderful, At Times Horrible 2e Journey Sara Renzulli, Ph.D. Running time: 27:19 * Interview of an 2E grown up about her experience. #### Ideas to implement in SG: * * ### Session 3: How Two Experts in Gifted Ed Navigated their Child's 2e Journey Sally Reis, Ph.D. Running time: 40:21 * Professor of Educational Psychology, University of Connecticut. Trained in gifted education. * Parent of 2E child with dyslexia, who was born premature by 6 weeks. Her child has high verbal ability by poor reading ability. * Her child compensates by memorizing. * But her child is not able to access advanced materials which she needs due to her learning disability. * Parents needs to ensure that she can have 1 or 2 developmental goals, develop their strengths * Once a child has a interest in something, she will do whatever it takes to do that. * Ask teachers if child can turn in assignments relevant to her interests and accomodates her deficits (eg: instead of written work, ask her to look for materials, watch advanced videos etc) * Ask Teachers, what their interests are, what they do well in. If they don't know, ask them to find out. * Encourage child to develop their own set of coping strategies * Parents have to put 2E kids in the right learning environment to help them shine #### Ideas to implement in SG: * Self-scientist : develop what works for each child * Strength based intervention * Understand the ways you can be more successful in school * Plan 1 or 2 development goals for 2E children ### Session 4: Focusing Solely on Remediation, aka Sit, Git and Spit, Has Not Worked Joe Renzulli, Ph.D. Running time: 23:58 * Coral : cant focus.
