### NEIC AHM 2021 talk abstract: How to reach learners when they can not be in class See also: hackathon plan: https://hackmd.io/Y0okc9xgSsqytsaxYPEsAQ # How to reach learners when they can not be in the class ## Abstract With the pandemic came new challenges for teaching courses. Previously, the CodeRefinery (CR) team had been traveling around the Nordics sharing software development best practices. However, with restricted travel this was not possible anymore. So CR shifted to remote teaching. Remote teaching is not just presenting slides over Zoom. The CR team learned new techniques in how to deliver content, user interaction, continuous evaluation, hands-on labs, and feedback. They had to get familiar with tools and software for this. In this short workshop the CR team will demonstrate what they have learned and give the participants a chance to try out the tools used. ## Why * Pandemic * Less traveling, better for climate * Larger reach and impact * Foreign experts: easier to onboard and involve instructors and helpers * Teach the less advantaged who do not have the resources to travel or have a local course * Archive friendly * Universal contribution friendly ## Contributors * Richard Darst (CR) * Sabry Razick (CR) * Johan Hellsvik (CR) * Radovan Bast * ## The pedagogy ## Technology needed - Browser ## Examples - Streaming via Twitch - How to protect the privacy of learners in a large online event with streaming and recording - Asynchronous questions and answers via HackMD - Co-teaching ## How to join the CR effort and use the existing resources
