## Initial Study Weekly Study Group in Japanese
Joi to Boris:
> I'm working on the philosophical substance with Takemura-sensei in the context of what we want/need to do in a Japanese context. We are planning to conduct a weekly meeting in Japanese about this. I'm thinking about how/when to do the English language thing. I'm thinking of doing a kick-off meeting in Japanese next Friday. Here is a draft of the invitation that I'm working on. Still very rough but gives you a sense of where my head is at right now... We should discuss sometime soon, but please let me me put together a rough draft with Takemura-sensei before doing a loop with you, Boris.
Dear X,
You are invited to join the first meeting of the 変革会. This weekly meeting will be a preparatory meeting for a new center tentatively called the 変革センター that Joi Ito will be creating with Mitsuhiro Takemura and others. We will discuss the mission and purpose of the center as well as the substance of our work at the center.
In 2018, Joi completed his dissertation at Keio University which was called The Practice of Change / 変革論. In the dissertation, Joi discussed how to intervene in complex self-adaptive systems such as society and the planetary ecology. The new Center will endeavor to expand the scholarship beginning in the dissertation as well as provide a platform for making interventions in society.
The Digital Agency of Japan was established to help Japanese society with its digital transformation and to transform society through the use of digital technology. It is important that we do not merely digitize pre-digital processes and architectures but radically transform and refactor government and society to help Japanese society become more resilient and better adapted to the current global/digital environment. This will allow society to flourish in ways that seem to be challenging and elusive for Japan today.
This will require more than just a technical or even a technical/legal/policy approach. The behavior of the complex self-adaptive system that is society is guided more by the goals of the people than its rules - indeed the rules should reflect the goals. The goals develop from people’s values and the paradigms of society such as economics and democracy. These paradigms develop and are transmitted more through culture and aesthetics than through policy. The paradigm shift - a philosophical transformation - that is required to respond to the climate crisis, digital society and the new kind of global society driven by a global digital network and the shared responsibility for the environment will require this transformation.
The new philosophy will require a science and technology-informed conversation and work. We must design interventions in society - laws, products, media, movements - inspired by new aesthetics - a new sensibility - that will emerge from the anti-disciplinary activity of bringing together expert scholars, designers, entrepreneurs, students, writers, and many other types of people.
The weekly meeting and the Center will serve as one of the hubs for this ongoing process of radical transformation that is required for the future of Japan.
