# How to play Alacrity Renegade in Fractals.
[TOC]
## Preface
Alacrity Renegade is the most important support role in Fractals.
This guide will break down how to effectively play this class and why it is an essential role in party compositions.
The following article is written with the assumption that the Renegade is geared in full Diviners with Scholar runes, 150 AR (Agony Resistance) and +100 Concentration food buff. Looks like [this (gw2skills.net)](http://gw2skills.net/editor/?PmwAwyZltQHsNyhpRNsM6hNSfMDKgJzl9rH-zRJYwRH/hUhCobRQLDBbdQEb2YPYL7usB-e).
Under these conditions the Renegade should be at 100% Boon Duration.
:::success
Due to Recursive Resourcing (Fractal Mastery), each 1 AR increases personal attributes by 1.5. With this in mind 150 AR can increase a 225 attribute on Concentration.

:::info
This article was completed in 2021 Mar 30th, which is under 2020 Jul 7th Balance Patch. Although the latest Balance Patch (2021 May 11th) Patch has been changed to this class, the overall gameplay has not changed much.

## What Do Renegades Provide?
### Alacrity
1. Trait <code class="trait">Righteous Rebel</code> (abbr. RR).
2. Spam **Orders from Above** off cooldown.
3. Keep spamming till the fight is finished.
If you want to grind DPS from a Alacrity Renegade, you can lower Boon Duration to 80%. Before you make this decision, please make sure that you know what you are doing!
### Might
In long fights, Firebrands can only provide roughly 20 stacks of Might, because of this an Alacrity Renegade is needed to provide the remaining 5 stacks.
1. Spam **Heroic Command** when might is not at 25 stacks.
2. Keep spamming till the fight is finished.
Ideally, the group will have 25 stacks of might at all times.
But not too worry about the beginning, since Firebrand usually pre-cast many boons before fight starting.
### Protection
There are many PUGs and newer players think Protection comes from the Firebrand, but it is not true.
Protection is from the Renegade. There is a Trait called <code class="legend kalla">All for One</code> wherein after every **Legendary Renegade seirse skill** used, Protection will be shared to teammates.
Using one **Legendary Renegade seirse skill**, 8 seconds of Protection is provided on the group. With the Legend switch being only 9 seconds, a Renegade only has to use 2 **Legendary Renegade seirse skill** to cover nearly 100% Protection uptime.
:::success
**Legendary Renegade seirse skill** not only utility skills, but also healing skill and elite skill are Included.

### Crowd Control (CC)
The most well known CC a renegade has is Staff 5, however that is not the only CC skill they can use.
- {Surge of the Mists|Staff-5} is usually only used on bosses as it is the most effective CC skill. Please be aware that when the skill is pressed it will take a second or two to activate. Additionally if the energy bar is below 15%, the skill will be cancel.
- <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> 's **Darkrazor’s Daring** mainly used when the team is facing multiple mobs. This skill is an AoE Stun and interrupts many mobs at the same time.
- **Jade Winds** can be used when channeling the <code class="legend shiro">Shiro</code> Legend. It makes for a decent AoE CC as well as on boss CC. Keep in mind that this skill uses 50% energy.
## Other Legends
Apart from <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> there are 4 other Legends to choose from. Of course it is not wise to choose randomly. Each Legend excels in different situations.
### Jalis (Dwarf)
There are many situations where group Stability is needed. Fractals such as Shattered Observatory, Chaos and Underground Facility are only a few examples. In these cases, we will choose <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> as our 2nd Legend.
==Most of the Stability is from **Inspiring Reinforcement**==, if energy is being used efficiently **Inspiring Reinforcement** can be used twice. Once when switching to <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> and one more time when leaving <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code>.
Another good reason to bring <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> is the Rite of the Great Dwarf skill. Using the skill will reduce some incoming damage. But do not forget Protection from <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> has higher priority than Rite of the Great Dwarf.
### Mallyx (Demon)
There are 2 main reasons to bring this Legend.
1. ==When we need boon strip.==
2. ==When we need Resistance (Boon).==
The bosses that generate self boons, like Amala from Twilight Oasis or the notorious Fractal Instability, ==No Pain, No Gain==, is already a good enough reason to bring <code class="legend mallyx">Mallyx</code>.
For Fractals that deal mass condition damage, <code class="legend mallyx">Mallyx</code> is the best choice, more so if the Fractal instability is Afflicted.
To counter the condition damage, **Pain Absorption** is used to share Resistance to the group, however do not forget those conditions will be transferred to the Renegade. When this happens the Firebrand should clear them from your bar in a timely fashion.
Another forgotten condition cleanse skill is {Renewing Wave|Staff-4}. When all else fails, use Staff 4.
### Ventari (Centaur)
<code class="legend ventari">Ventari</code> is mainly used for its bubble, **Protective Solace**, ==for blocking projectiles==.
Before taking <code class="legend ventari">Ventari</code>, please understand that it has less function than other Legends. Because of the high energy consumption, <code class="legend ventari">Ventari</code> is only practical if the group needs to block projectiles and desperate condition cleanses.
### Shiro (Assassin)
<code class="legend shiro">Shiro</code> has the least utility. Only consider bringing it for more damage - assuming the functions of Jalis, Mallyx and Ventari are not needed.
**Impossible Odds** increases personal attack speed. (This is not Quickness)
Do not forget Jade Winds. The <code class="legend shiro">Shiro</code> elite is another good CC skill to keep in mind.
## Effective Energy Management
An Alacrity Renegade in Fractals is like a Druid in Raids. As a support role, always keep in mind - How can I help my teammates efficiently and effectively?
### Charged Mists
As aforementioned, Renegades have energy limitations. To Solve this problem, <code class="trait">Charged Mists</code> (from Invocation Trait) is brought. When used correctly it will provide 20% more energy to use.
At the beginning of the fight, provide as much support from the 2 Legends that were chosen. The opening rotation should roughly look something like this.
1. Enter the fight, spend 41 to 50 energy immediately.
2. Switch Legend when there is less than 10% energy on the bar.
3. Now the bar should have 70 energy after Switching Legend.
The graph below shows the energy cost of the most commonly used skills.
| Legend | Skill | Energy Cost | Note |
|:-------------------------------------------:|:---------------------------:|:-----------:| -------------- |
| - | ==Order from Above== | ==20== | alacrity |
| - | Heroic Command | 10 | might |
| - | ==Surge of the Mists== | 15 | staff 5 |
| <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> | ==Darkrazor's Daring== | 30 | AoE daze |
| <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> | Icerazor's Ire | 20 | vulner |
| <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> | ==Inspiring Reinforcement== | ==30== | stab road |
| <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> | Rite of the Great Dwarf | 40 | reduce inc dmg |
| <code class="legend mallyx">Mallyx</code> | ==Banish Enchantment== | 20 | boon strip |
| <code class="legend mallyx">Mallyx</code> | Pain Absorption | 30 | resist |
| <code class="legend ventari">Ventari</code> | Purifying Essence | 25 | condi cleanse |
| <code class="legend shiro">Shiro</code> | Jade Winds | 50 | AoE stun |
There is no need to try and remember the specific numbers right away as it can be very confusing and ultimately take your focus away from the group. Over time and experience the knowledge becomes second nature.
### Upkeep Skills
While those skills are a one time use before going on cooldown, there is another type of skill which requires constant energy. These Upkeep skills can be used for a prolonged amount of time in exchange for energy ticks.
| Legend | Skill | Energy Cost | Note |
|:-------------------------------------------:|:--------------------:|:-----------:| ------------------------------ |
| <code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> | Soulcleave's Summit | 8 per sec | Elite skill. |
| <code class="legend jalis">Jalis</code> | Vengeful Hammers | 6 per sec | Reduce inc dmg (only on self). |
| <code class="legend mallyx">Mallyx</code> | Embrace the Darkness | 6 per sec | Elite skill. (abbr. EtD). |
| <code class="legend ventari">Ventari</code> | Protective Solace | 6 per sec | Bubble. |
| <code class="legend shiro">Shiro</code> | Impossible Odds | 6 per sec | when u want to grind dps. |
If you find that your energy is regenerating too fast and you worry about mistiming the switch, upkeep skills are the way to go. However, please note that these skills are low priority.
## Renegades can heal too
<code class="legend kalla">Kalla</code> elite skill, Soulcleave’s Summit, is one of the better Upkeep skills and can be used rather frequently. The reason for this is that it generates an AoE buff that not only increase DPS player's damage, but also allows the DPS to recover some health with each attack.
## What else does a Renegade bring?
Some things are just too simple to explain, and will happen almost passively thanks to the build traits and weapon skills.
1. <code class="trait">Assassin's Presence</code> (abbr. AP, from Devastation Trait)
2. Full 25 stacks Vulnerability on enemy.
3. Around 33% uptime of Retaliation, from <code class="trait">Spirit Boon</code> (from Invocation Trait).
4. Immobilize from {Shackling Wave|Sword-4} .
## Final Parting Tips
1. Use {Deathstrike|Sword-5} to teleport to an enemy if needed. There are some mechanics that will force players to leave group, however it can be used to speed up your Fractal progress with skips.
2. Use skills properly instead of insisting to proc your <code class="trait">Charged Mists</code> passive. Giving out boons and using CC skills are the first priority.
3. When in doubt take Jalis if you don't know what legend is the best for the current Fractal.
4. Supporting PUGs is a challenge because they face tank damage frequently. If they are constantly down or arguing with you about something that you know you are better at, just ignore them!
5. Get Gud and Have fun :)
