# Grant funding supported by HPC
A few months ago, back in early Summer 2021, we asked colleagues who had been identified as PIs (Principal Investigators) to tell us a little about their grants, funding and how much it depends in the HPC facility.
We asked:
* Their name
* Their faculty
* The value of current grant income per year (so for a total award of £300,000 over 3 years this would be £100,000)
* The degree to which research depends on HPC (Completely, partially, or not at all)
We also gave respondents the opportunity to comment.
## Findings
1. We identified **208** people as PIs. This was derived from the user application form that new users complete. We had **132** responses.
**Response rate: 63%**
2. We did not include any Centres for Doctoral training, Taught Programme teaching or any non-research grant income in our totals.
3. In the [last published University accounts](https://www.leeds.ac.uk/downloads/download/72/corporate_publications), the University had a total research income from all sources of **£139,887,000**
4. Our survey respondents reported a total research income of **£29,892,157**
**Percentage of total reported University research grants and contracts underpinned by HPC = 21.37 %**
5. We had responses from every faculty except Social Sciences, with the number of responses from each faculty summarised in *Table 1*
|Faculty|Number of responses|
|---|---|
|Arts, Humanities and Culture | 1 |
|Engineering and Physical Sciences| 68 |
|Biological Sciences| 17 |
|Business School | 1 |
|Social Sciences | 0 |
|Environment | 31 |
|Medicine and Health | 14 |
*Table 1: funding summary returns by faculty*
6. From the responses we calculated the value of reported grant income by faculty (*table 2*):
|Faculty | Reported grant income |
|---|---|
|AHC | £100,000|
|Environment | £8,569,000|
|FBS | £3,627,000|
|FEPS | £14,915,865|
|LUBS | 0|
|Medicine and Health| £2,680,292|
*Table 2: Reported grant income by faculty*
(The one respondent from the Business School does not report any grant income in the current year)
7. We asked whether research was completely or partially dependent on HPC, or whether it was a "nice to have" and other facilities could be used instead:
|Dependence| Number of respondents| Percentage |
|---|---|---|
|Completely | 61 | 47% |
|Partially | 67 | 51%
|Nice to have | 4 | 2% |

**There is a significant dependence on a robust HPC service to support computational and data driven research at the University**
