### Discovery

Yellow fever was the first human illness shown to be caused by a filterable virus in 1901 and isolated the yellow fever virus (YFV) in 1927 (Latin: flavus, meaning yellow and is derived from the name Flaviviridae). The virus causing Japanese encephalitis (JE), described clinically in the 1870s, was isolated from human brain tissue in 1935. Australian X-disease, an epidemic encephalitis illness described in 1911, shown to be caused by Murray valley encephalitis virus (MVE) in 1951.
