Introduction
This summer, I attempted to learn how to pitch a ball in order to understand how humans evolved.

What?
Yes, somehow, this is connected to this.
The two may seem unrelated, and any attempt to form a causation relationship between the two may seem farfetched; if we step back to think about the richness, complexity, and vast scale of human history and uniqueness, it may be difficult to attribute it to something as seemingly trivial as an ability to throw. And I understand, as this was also my initial reaction.

My hopes for this document are that it provides:
A brief overview of some key universal features of DAWs, and
An exposure to these features through a learning activity.
With that having been said, let's dive in!
1) ACTIVITY: Trying a DAW

Here are a few activities that will introduce some skills you will use when you use BandLab, Garageband, or any other kind of DAW that you will be using.
Sequencing
"Sequencers allow you to program a combination of notes, rhythms, articulations and effects that can be sent to anything from your DAW of choice to hardware synths. By programming your patterns, melodies and loops, you free yourself up to experiment with mixing, dynamics and performing with other instruments."" [^1]
Try Sequencing!
Open Song Maker and play around with this sequencer.

A short foreword:
Welcome! My hopes for these documents are that they would give you the fundamentals, skills, and tools to be able to go out on your own and experiment by yourself as an artist.
As you go through these activities, please share your thoughts with each other through the "Reflections" forums. Your realizations, observations, and reflections may be valuable to others who might have missed something along the way or may not have thought about things as you have... and vice versa; you might get something out of reading others' posts, as well. As artists, you will probably want to collaborate with others in the future; think of this as a way for you to start doing so early. With that having been said, go for it! Good luck.

Welcome! By the end of this pathway, the hope is that you'll have a better understanding of sampling in (Hip-Hop) music.

How To Use This Document
However you explore this pathway is up to you. Feel free to jump back and forth from chapter to chapter and activity to activity.
In each chapter, you will find JOURNAL prompts. These are optional moments for you to reflect on each activity and record your thoughts about your experiences. In my opinion, these are important because music, like all art, requires a lot of reflection and deliberation.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me @brendansson@gmail.com.
