# ADR-0009 - Standing Desk * Status: in-progress * Deciders: Jeff Billimek * Date: 2020-07-18 Technical Story: As a remote IT worker, I want to have a standing desk, So that I will have a healthier lifestyle and non-hurting back ## Context and Problem Statement We are going to be stuck at home for the foreseeable future. There is strong demand in the marketplace right now for standing desk solutions. Prices are inflated and/or backordered. Ideally, I need to identify a solution that will work sooner-rather-than-later. ## Scope * Must fit within the confines of my study ## Decision Drivers * Need to procure a new 'high-top' chair * Adjustable or fixed-height * Size of table-top (current desk is quite expanive at 7' wide and 3.75' deep) ## Considered Options * Purchase motorized adjustable standing desk frame and bring my own tabletop (e.g. Uplift or Jarvis) * Purchase motorized adjustable standing desk frame with included tabletop (e.g. Uplift or Jarvis) * Purchase home depot Husky hand-crank workbench as a standing desk * DIY steel pipe desk with butcher block tabletop * Don't pursue a standing desk and stay with the sitting desk solution I currently use ## Decision Outcome Chosen option: * DIY steel pipe desk with butcher block tabletop Biggest factor: Less expensive and can fully customize the solution, also better stability (I hope) ## Pros and Cons of the Options ### Purchase motorized adjustable standing desk frame and bring my own tabletop (e.g. Uplift or Jarvis) * Good, because it is a popular choice and intended for standing desks * Good, because I can source the tabletop size and style that I want * Bad, because it's pretty expensive * Bad, because it will be at least two months until I could get this ### Purchase motorized adjustable standing desk frame with included tabletop (e.g. Uplift or Jarvis) * Good, because it is a popular choice and intended for standing desks * Good, because everything is included as a single solution * Bad, because it's pretty expensive * Bad, because it will be at least two months until I could get this * Bad, because I will be constrained by the tabletop size (probably too small for what I really want) ### Purchase home depot Husky hand-crank workbench as a standing desk * Good, because it is cheap * Good, because I can get it pretty fast * Bad, because the max height is probsbly too low * Bad, because the tabletop size is too small (only 2' deep) ### DIY steel pipe desk with butcher block tabletop * Good, because I can get it much quicker than the Uplift or Jarvis soltuion * Good, because I can source the tabletop size and style that I want * Good, because it may be much more stable than the motorized options * Good, because I can still manually adjust the height to exactly what I want * Good, because I can always repurpose as a sitting desk later in the future * Bad, because I can't easily change the height during the day * Bad, because I will need to procure a tall chair to use with this ### Don't pursue a standing desk and stay with the sitting desk solution I currently use * Good, because it has zero cost * Good, because I know my current desktop size works for my needs * Bad, because I will continue to have a sore butt and back pain ## References * [Uplift V2 Desk](https://www.upliftdesk.com/uplift-v2-standing-desk-v2-or-v2-commercial/) * [Home Depot Husky adjustable workbench](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-62-in-Adjustable-Height-Work-Bench-Table-HOLT62XDB12/301810799) * [Simplified Building adjustible steel pipe desk frame](https://www.simplifiedbuilding.com/kits/pipe-desk-frames/table-frame-kit-adjustable-height) * [Home Depot Birch Butcher Block](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Hardwood-Reflections-6-ft-2-in-L-x-3-ft-3-in-D-x-1-5-in-T-Island-Butcher-Block-Countertop-in-Unfinished-Birch-BBCT1502574/300688695)
