Long has been taking these walks since the mid 1960s where he has walked in places such as the Sahara Desert, Australia, Iceland and near his home in Bristol, United Kingdom. His work has proven to be revolutionary as it has changed how society views sculpture. His work has influenced the boundaries of sculpture to not be limited to only "traditional" materials and to be able to use alternative materials in his work. Not only is he using alternative materials such as rock and earth, but he also changed what art is, as the actual art piece can be the process of creating the art itself ### Cases **Turner Prize: Outstanding Contribution** -- *White Water Line* ![](https://i.imgur.com/0HLqHIk.jpg) > ‘A walk marks time with an accumulation of footsteps. It defines the form of the land. Walking the roads and paths is to trace a portrait of the country. I have become interested in using a walk to express original ideas about the land, art and walking itself.’ (Richard Long, Words after fact, 1982) > -"In Waterline, 1989, Long spills white acrylic paint(丙烯顏料) across a long strip of black vinyl(乙烯基) to represent his path. An emulsion(乳膠) has been added which bonds the pigment(顏料) to the vinyl((乙烯基)), making a permanent cohesion between the two. Instead of recreating an activity from destination to destination, Long has objectified it(將主體活動行為 對象化/物化), constructing a transportable object with fine-art materials. This work asserts a much clearer distinction between gallery space and natural setting(強調展館和自然環境的區隔), taking into account both the viewer’s behavior and the representation of an individual’s subjective experience(兼顧觀者行為 與 個人主觀體驗的再現)." (—Kirby Gookin) **Tate Modern/Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery** -- *Delabole Slate Circle* ![](https://i.imgur.com/bbyJteg.jpg) -The piece is nearly 2 metres in diameter and is composed of 168 pieces of slate that came from the Delabole quarry in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The piece can be configured differently, however Long has specified a few rules on how it should be put together—— All pieces of stone must touch so that they can be locked together and stable, as well as the pieces must form a circle. The connection of the slates and the geometric shape illustrates a common theme that Long portrays in his work about the relationship between man and nature(石塊的聯結和幾何圓形 說明long作品中共同主題 即人與自然的關係) > "you could say that my work is ... a balance between the patterns of nature and formalism of human, abstract ideas of lines and circles. It is where my human characteristics meet the natural forces and patterns of the world, and that is really the kind of subject of my work." (----Long ) > "Cornish Stone Circle becomes not only a sculptural configuration, but a way of representing a far-off place, through the presence of materials gathered there."(----MOMA) [![](https://i.imgur.com/Yn0a8dU.jpg)](https://www.moma.org/collection/works/81483) **Berlin Circle* ## WORK ANALYSIS: Human Scale - human-nature: -- human as texture of nature(interacted by embodiment--foot touch language...) ![](https://i.imgur.com/7WMBAAd.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/1RzpESu.jpg) -- nature as texture of human work(intermediated by stone water mud...) ![](https://i.imgur.com/fFTWLle.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/6mcOc0w.jpg) ## LINK TO DESIGN: Post-modern x Human Factor - post-modern: > ‘Richard Long’s squiggly walk gives a post-modern twist to traditions that date back to prehistoric cave paintings’ (----Campbell-Johnston 2007). ![](https://i.imgur.com/PjYgkSv.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/6Hv8NVg.jpg) - human nature-human factor: -- communicate with human nature-through object -semiotic (languge-graphic...)-instant respond, methophor... ![](https://i.imgur.com/vhoemVD.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/YugRKzF.jpg) ## MY WORK: 3d-scan Installation in Real Landscape ### Reference: ![](https://i.imgur.com/jeooMSj.jpg) ### Concept: - ritualistic design as link between human and nature ![](https://i.imgur.com/qMB9qix.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/1hEfgSy.png) - humanscale to nature-point of view shifting ![](https://i.imgur.com/l5gQ6aV.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/5VWf3Zc.jpg) ### Method: - moss from ritualistic site of desert :lidar scan + 3d print ![](https://i.imgur.com/AUrTTIt.jpg) - moss architecture with geometric shape ![](https://i.imgur.com/KbWPFOI.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/LQdD2pr.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/qfEBix7.jpg) - moss planting on the architecture ![](https://i.imgur.com/lKLzilj.png) - high-tech stylish stone plate as walkpave ![](https://i.imgur.com/XeyWkb7.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/XvcOJBK.jpg) - Bird View ![](https://i.imgur.com/YoOZbC7.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/BDXPOMY.jpg) ### Conceptual Animation <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/tI6ITMYSSw4" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe> ## Extension: **AI Generating Work vs Human-Touch** -INPUT: “A desert-landscape based natural sculpture of by Richard Long” -OUPUT: [dreamstudio](https://beta.dreamstudio.ai/home?code=p-2NR4zz-ut-nQ7mk4AKxy0O2GU8qF4hQlTeh53gu_3AU&state=eFhsSXplWjBFWUVZeFB0cHJZcEpTbWllY1FuRGFOSmE4LmhKNjFaRWpOdg==) ![](https://i.imgur.com/saIlvmZ.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/5yXKE84.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/AnhKCAn.png) ![](https://i.imgur.com/wwwPDv8.png) [dreamai](https://dream.ai/create) ![](https://i.imgur.com/a50gjiv.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/1K35iNn.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/J52UHDF.jpg)
