## Глава 5. Калифорнийский губан
Несколько дней Женька не появлялся у своей подружки, даже не звонил ей. Сначала девочка только радовалась тому, что она, наконец-то, сможет побыть в одиночестве и позаниматься своими делами: почитать какую-нибудь книжку, порисовать, даже поиграть с куклами. А что? Не такая уж она и взрослая, чтобы совсем забросить своих любимиц. Но вскоре она загрустила. Да, конечно, Женька порой бывал таким приставучим, но вот нет его несколько дней подряд, и уже чего-то не хватает. Поэтому, когда она в телефонной трубке услышала вновь его голос, радости не было предела.
– Ну, и куда теперь ты пропал? Почему не звонил? – взволнованно спрашивала она. Женька, довольный и одновременно смущенный тем, что девочка переживала за него, сказал:
– Меня, как и тебя в прошлый раз, внезапно увезли в деревню к бабушке, а там сама знаешь, какая там связь. А из деревни я вернулся не один. Помнишь моего двоюродного братца, Витька? Вот он приехал к нам погостить на недельку-другую. Можно, мы с ним вместе к тебе придем? Ты же уже наверняка придумала историю о каком-то необычном существе?
– Ладно уж, приходите вместе, только ты своего братца предупреди, чтобы без спросу никуда не лез, а то, чего доброго, мне еще потом дополнительную уборку придется делать, да и от мамы влететь может.
– Не переживай, он же уже подрос, будет вести себя нормально. К тому же, он интересуется животными, любит их.
– Хорошо, жду вас, – сказала Машка и повесила трубку.
Вскоре мальчишки уже были в ее комнате и с увлечением рассматривали фотографии удивительных животных.
Затем Маша обратила их внимание на фото, сделанное под водой, на котором была запечатлена необычная рыба, плывущая среди растущих на дне водоема водорослей.

Внизу плавала рыбка другого цвета, размером поменьше, но по форме похожая на ту, что была на первом плане.
У мальчишек разом вырвалось:
– Вау, вот это рыба!
– Как она называется, где живет? Давай, выкладывай побыстрее! – Женьку опять понесло, как застоявшегося в стойле жеребенка. – Не томи, рассказывай!!!
Витек лишь молча жалобно смотрел на нее...
Машка весело рассмеялась и начала свой рассказ.
– Эта рыба называется "Калифорнийский губан", надеюсь, вы могли догадаться из ее названия, родом она из Калифорнии, в прибрежных водах которой она, в основном, и обитает.
– А где она находится, эта самая Калифорния? – спросил Витек, который по малолетству еще не "дружил" с географией.
– В Америке. – терпеливо стала объяснять Маша неслышленышу. – Слышал же, наверное, про то, что есть такая страна – США или Соединеннные Штаты Америки.
– Слышал, конечно, не такой уж я дурачок, каким вы меня считаете, – обиженно надул губы Витек. – Конечно, вы же старше и умнее меня, но я скоро вырасту, догоню вас и даже обгоню! – запальчиво добавил он.
Машка снисходительно посмотрела не него, но ничего не сказала в ответ. Все равно он не поймет, что догнать по возрасту он их не сможет при всем своем желании, как бы ни старался. Поэтому она просто продолжила свой рассказ.
– Калифорнийский губан относится к роду губановых рыб, среди которых попадаются как совсем маленькие, размером не более 6—7 см, так и гиганты, длина которых достигает два с половиной метра. И весят такие богатыри под 200 килограммов каждый, представляете?

– Ничего себе, – восхитился Женька, а Витек лишь кивнул головой, сглотнув от волнения слюну.
Далее Машка рассказала своим друзьям, что рыбы этой породы имеют удлиненное тело, покрытое крупной чешуей.

Но не этим выделяются они среди своих подводных сородичей, а своим выдвижным ртом с толстыми и мясистыми губами и зубами конической или резцевидной формы, которые растут на складках внутренней стороны рта. В подтверждение своих слов она показала мальчишкам очередную фотографию. Зубы губана выглядели внушительно и устрашающе.

– Своими зубами они с легкостью дробят ракушки моллюсков и питаются этими деликатесами. Еще эти рыбы интересны тем, что имеют разнообразную окраску, причем в течение своей жизни они способны менять ее несколько раз. Но когда губаны умирают, они теряют свою окраску. А некоторые из них могут флюоресцировать.

Все, без исключения, губаны, не только калифорнийский, обитают у каменистых, заросших водорослями берегов и коралловых рифов. Они – одиночки, и на свою территорию не пустят чужака. По ночам они спят, зарываясь в песок либо окутывая себя слизистым коконом. Кстати, в семействе этих рыб насчитывается 69 родов, которые состоят из более чем пятисот видов!

– Ого..., – только и сказал Женька. Витек вновь предпочел промолчать, чтобы избежать насмешек.
– И еще одна особенность есть у губанов. Вот, представьте себе – вы же с детства уже знаете, кто мальчик, а кто - девочка. А все губаны рождаются самцами, но когда вырастут, кто-то из них по собственному желанию может превратиться в самку, чтобы произвести потомство.
Ну, что, вам было интересно? – закончив свой рассказ, спросила девочка. – Еще придешь в гости? – обратилась она к Витьку, который смотрел на нее восхищенным взглядом.
– Да, приду, мне очень понравилось. И вы не думайте, что я маленький и ничего не понимаю. Мне было очень интересно узнать об этой рыбе! А в следующий раз ты о ком будешь рассказывать? – тут же поинтересовался он.
Маша рассмеялась, разворошила рукой его непослушные волосы и сказала:
– Нет, не о рыбе, но о ком – я пока вам не скажу, пусть это будет для вас сюрпризом! А теперь бегите домой, у меня много дел еще впереди.
Мальчишки убежали, а Маша стала заниматься домашними делами, размышляя одновременно над тем, как ей построить рассказ о следующем необычном обитателе нашей планеты.

Chapter 5. California wrasse
For several days Eugene did not appear at his girlfriend's, did not even call her. At first, girl was only happy that she would finally be able to be alone and do their own thing: read a book, draw, even play with dolls. What? She wasn't old enough to give up her Pets altogether. But soon she was sad. Yes, of course, Eugene was sometimes so annoying, but there is no it a few days in a row, and already something is missing. So when she heard his voice on the phone again, she was overjoyed.
– Well, where have you gone now?" Why didn't you call?" "what is it? – she asked excitedly. Eugene, pleased and at same time embarrassed that girl was worried about him, said:
