Ребята долго не задерживались на кухне. Маша быстро разогрела стоявший на плите суп, а Женька в это время нарезал хлеб и сервировал стол. Затем они быстро поели, составили посуду в раковину и, вернувшись в комнату, принялись рассматривать следующее фото.
– Вот, смотри, на фото видно, насколько крупная эта птица. Только представь, ее рост достигает 1,5 метра, а размах крыльев – до 2,5 метров.

– Да и вес у этой пташки тоже приличный – от 5 до 7 кг. А как красиво смотрится она в полете!
Основной пищей для Китоглавов являются двоякодышащие рыбы – протоптеры, а также тилапии и сомы. Другую пищу им трудно добывать, все из-за своего необычного клюва. Они могут, конечно, есть лягушек, водных змей или даже детенышей крокодилов, черепах, улиток, грызунов и мелких водоплавающих птиц, но при нехватке привычного для них питания китоглавы часто гибнут от голода.

Охотятся они, в основном, на рассвете, хотя при необходимости могут ловить рыбу и днем.

– Маш, а как он спит-то? Клюв же у него такой огромный, что, наверное, не дает птице сохранять равновесие, когда она засыпает?
– Ты прав, Женька, китоглаву нелегко, именно поэтому он приспособился класть его себе на грудь, а не держать на весу.

– Есть у этой птицы и еще одно название - "Королевская цапля", и это при том, что китоглав вовсе к ним не относится, так как является одним-единственным представителем семейства китоглавых из отряда аистообразных.
Есть у этих птиц еще одна особенность, которая отличает их от других птиц - глаза у них расположены не по бокам головы, а в передней части черепа.

– А они как живут – в стае или каждый сам по себе? – спросил Женька.
– В основном, по отдельности. Им большая компания ни к чему. Для выведения потомства в укрытом от посторонних глаз месте из тростника и папируса они строят гнезда, которые представляют собой огромную платформу с основанием, равным почти трем метрам. Внутри гнездо застилают сухой и мягкой травой.
Как только гнездо будет готово, начинаются брачные игры, самец заманивает самку, кивая головой, вытягивая шею, издавая глухие звуки и щелкая клювом. Иногда, чтобы привлечь внимание своей дамы, самец издает громкое и протяжное мычание, похожее на коровье.

Затем самка в течение пяти дней откладывает в гнездо от одного до трех яиц и целый месяц высиживает птенцов. А выкармливать их ей помогает заботливый папаша.

Кстати, здесь птицам помогает их большой клюв, которым они черпают воду и сначала поливают ею яйца, охлаждая их, когда жарко, а потом купают птенцов! Через два месяца потомство уже готово к тому, чтобы жить самостоятельно, но до возраста четырех месяцев они могут время от времени возвращаться к родителям.

– Конечно, хотел бы. Они такие странные... мне было очень интересно о них узнать. Спасибо тебе, Маша! А в школе, когда закончатся каникулы, ты будешь делать доклад о тех необычных созданиях, о которых мы с тобой сейчас говорим?
– Почему бы и нет? – задумчиво проговорила Маша, – учительница не будет против, я думаю. Ну, давай прощаться. В этот раз мы с тобой вдвое больше времени потратили на изучение Китоглава, а у меня есть еще немало дел на сегодня.
– Да и мне бежать домой надо, сегодня мама дала поручение, которое я забыл выполнить. Завтра мы с тобой встретимся снова?
– Не знаю, мы с мамой собирались поехать в торговый центр, так что, ты лучше позвони, прежде чем бежать сюда, сломя голову. Вдруг нас не будет дома.
– Ладно, договорились! – сказал Женька и убежал домой, а Маша занялась своими делами. Не будем мешать ей, а тоже попрощаемся до будущей встречи.
