Буквально на днях прочитала в интернете статью о том, что оказывается, **хронический рак при соответствующем его контроле продлевает жизнь**... --- ![](https://www.miloserdie.ru/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/microscope_0.jpg) [Фото](https://infonewsportal.ru/khronicheskijj-rak-prodlevaet-zhizn-vazhno-ego-kontrolirovat.html) --- К такому выводу пришел **врач-радиолог Роберт Гейтенби**, занимавшийся проблемами лечения рака с середины восьмидесятых годов прошлого столетия, когда работал в Онкологическом центре Фокс Чейс в Филадельфии (США). Методы лечения больных раком молочной железы его не устраивали ибо они приносили невыносимые страдания пациенткам, которые находились на излечении в Центре. По данным, собранным врачом-радиологом в период с 1985-го по 1998-й год, 15 процентов больных умерло не от рака, а от последствий борьбы с ним. Прежде всего, от химиотерапии, суть которой заключается в том, что больным дают практически смертельную дозу предназначенных для этой цели препаратов. Целью этого лечения является ликвидация раковых клеток, вот только вместе с ними гибнут и все остальные клетки. После проведенного курса такой терапии у больных возникают тяжелые побочные эффекты, среди которых тошнота, расстройство стула, затрудненность дыхания, проблемы с печенью, снижение иммунитета и т.д. Я ее испытала на себе, причем, дважды - в 2005-м году, когда мне впервые поставили этот диагноз, и, начиная с 2015-го года, когда у меня в легких обнаружили опухоль и целую россыпь метастазов рака молочной железы, и по настоящее время я вновь прохожу химиотерапию, правда, на этот раз не столь жесткую, как тогда, но зато более длительную, растянувшуюся на годы. И как я поняла из последней встречи со своим онкологом, на этот раз она бессрочна. *Роберт Гейтенби, изучая воздействие лечения рака, в частности, методом химиотерапии, пришел к выводу, что метод этот не только неэффективен, но еще и вреден. Опасность его заключается в том, что раковые клетки, в отличие от здоровых, под воздействием ядовитых препаратов гибнут лишь частично. Часть этих клеток, мутируя, становятся устойчивыми к применяемым лекарствам и разносятся по всем, жизненно важным органам человека в виде метастаз.* Анализируя собранные данные, доктор провел некую параллель между борьбой медиков с раковыми клетками и... сражениями фермеров с личинками капустной моли. Сопоставляя их с выводами, сделанными химиками-энтомологами, он пришел к выводу, что рак победить нельзя, однако, его можно и нужно контролировать, заставив перейти из острой формы в хроническую. ## Математика на грани жизни и смерти Взяв за основу уравнение Лотки–Вольтерры, Роберт Гейтенби описал то, как раковые клетки соревнуются со здоровыми за энергетический ресурс – глюкозу. А на основании этого он предложил использовать другой метод, который получил название **адаптивной химиотерапии**. Суть его состоит в том, что для лечения больного используют более низкие дозы препаратов, что клетки рака, конечно же, не убивают наповал, но заставляют его как бы замереть, перестать размножаться вплоть до того, что опухоль может уменьшиться в размерах. В итоге — можно будет на какое-то время даже отказаться от приема лекарств. Статью о своем открытии Гейтенби опубликовал в журнале "Cancer Research" еще в 1991-м году, но его идея превращения рака в хроническое заболевание не было принято его коллегами. Никто не верил, что рак можно контролировать, проще ведь было, как считали многие онкологи, удалить опухоль оперативным путем и провести курсы лучевой и химической терапии — убить раковые клетки любой ценой. А тут еще им предлагалось поверить в то, что рак можно подвести под какую-то там математическую формулу. Но Роберт не сдавался и пошел на смелый эксперимент... ## Модель сработала В 2007-м году в Онкологическом центре Моффит Роберт Гейтенби создал "Отделение математической онкологии", где был создан ряд компьютерных программ, изучающих развитие и поведение раковых опухолей с помощью математических уравнений. Спустя семь лет, в 2014-м году, начался эксперимент по испытанию новой методике на добровольцах - 11 человек из тех, кто был в группе неизлечимо больных людей. Я не буду расписывать тут, как проходил этот эксперимент, кого интересует данный вопрос, легко сможет найти подробное описание проведенных испытаний. Я тоже надеюсь на это и в то же время хочу сказать, что то лечение, которое в данный момент получаю я, основано, как ни странно, на подобной методике. Мне назначена химиотерапия в щадящих дозах. В итоге мои метастазы замерли, не увеличиваются в размерах и не размножаются. Опухоль тоже застыла в одном положении. Мой онколог, не знаю уж как, но нашел тот самый метод лечения, над которым Гейтенби работал столько лет. На этом я, пожалуй, закончу свой пост. I have experienced it myself, and twice - in 2005, when I was first diagnosed with this, and since 2015, when a tumor was found in my lungs and a whole scattering of metastases of breast cancer, and to the present time I am again undergoing chemotherapy, although this time not as harsh as then, but longer, stretching for years. And as I understood from the last meeting with my oncologist, this time it is indefinite. Robert Gatenby, studying the effects of cancer treatment, in particular, chemotherapy, came to the conclusion that this method is not only ineffective, but also harmful. Its danger lies in the fact that cancer cells, unlike healthy ones, die only partially under the influence of poisonous drugs. Some of these cells, mutating, become resistant to the drugs used and spread to all the vital organs of man in the form of metastases. Analyzing the collected data, the doctor drew a parallel between the struggle of physicians with cancer cells and... farmers ' battles with cabbage moth larvae. Comparing them with the conclusions made by chemists-entomologists, he came to the conclusion that cancer can not be defeated, however, it can and should be controlled, forcing it to move from an acute form to a chronic one. ## Math on the verge of life and death Taking the Lotka–Volterra equation as a basis, Robert Gatenby described how cancer cells compete with healthy ones for an energy resource – glucose. And on the basis of this, he proposed to use another method, which was called adaptive chemotherapy. The essence of it is that for the treatment of the patient use lower doses of drugs that cancer cells, of course, do not kill on the spot, but make it seem to freeze, stop multiplying to the point that the tumor can shrink in size. As a result-it will be possible for some time even to refuse medication. Gatenby published an article about his discovery in the journal "Cancer Research" back in 1991, but his idea of turning cancer into a chronic disease was not accepted by his colleagues. No one believed that cancer could be controlled, because it was easier, as many oncologists believed, to remove the tumor surgically and conduct courses of radiation and chemical therapy — to kill cancer cells at any cost. And then they were asked to believe that cancer can be brought under some kind of mathematical formula. But Robert did not give up and went on a bold experiment... ## The model worked In 2007, at the Moffitt Cancer center, Robert Gatenby created the "Department of mathematical Oncology", where a number of computer programs were created that study the development and behavior of cancer tumors using mathematical equations. Seven years later, in 2014, an experiment began to test the new technique on volunteers-11 people from those who were in the group of terminally ill people. I will not paint here how this experiment took place, who is interested in this question, will easily be able to find a detailed description of the tests. I also hope so, and at the same time I want to say that the treatment that I am currently receiving is based, oddly enough, on a similar technique. I was prescribed chemotherapy in gentle doses. As a result, my metastases froze, do not increase in size and do not multiply. The tumor was also frozen in one position. My oncologist, I don't know how, found the same treatment that Gatenby had been working on for so many years. I think I'll finish my post here.
