# Ambassador Summary
Adopted from [Elian's writeup](https://hackmd.io/XWgeLdgNRDykwcB8_iba-w?view) and our conversations around it.
## What is an Ambassador?
The first issue at hand is the difference between an **ambassador** and a **maintainer**.
An ambassador advocates for and represents Astro _outside_ the community. They're a large part of the Astro community, but not responsible for maintaining it. An ambassador is _encouraged_ to contribute, like everyone else, but is not required.
A maintainer is supports the community from _within_: they're a key contributor to the project and the community, and are recognized for making consistent valuable contributions to the project.
If a community member does community advocacy outside the community _and_ maintains key project efforts (core, docs, support) - they're a great candidate for Maintainer! Our first unofficial ambassador ended up being a great Maintainer candidate.
An ambassador program would be a way to encourage someone to promote and advocate for the project and bring Astro into their communities. Ambassadors represent Astro at live and virtual events, create content to promote Astro, and advocate for Astro's use cases.
A maintainer is considered to be "closer to the project" than an ambassador. An ambassador could later become a maintainer - but it probably doesn't make sense for a maintainer to become an ambassador.
## Ambassador Duties/Opportunities
- Speaking at conferences and events
- Creating content
- Giving workshops
- Engaging with Astro users and potential users on social media and in-person, advocating for Astro's benefits
- Serving as an entry point into the Astro project
- Provide useful input to the roadmap from the perspective of an outside user
### Ambassadorship is not -
- Retweeting @astrodotbuild on twitter.
- for personal promotion: While you may gain valuable experience and exposure as an ambassador through your work, the primary focus should be on promoting and advocating the project, not on personal promotion. In return, _we_ will make sure you're recognized as an ambassador.
- a one-time thing: Being an ambassador requires a commitment to Astro and the community, regularly engaging with it.
## Ambassador Rewards
Need further discussion if we intend to start an ambassador program:
- Recognition/appreciation - spot on the website?
- Training - other ambassadors, maintainers, and core team members can help with technical writing and speaking
- Astro swag
- Exclusive channel with core + maintainers
