--- title: How to increase DAO participation in UberHaus? --- # How to increase DAO participation in UberHaus? ## Context  During the UberHaus Paladin call, we discussed about UberHaus' mission and manifesto and how we could increase more engagement within UberHaus. I will attempt to brainstorm how we can increase UberHaus participation by first looking at the user personas of different DAOs and why they might want to collaborate with different DAOs. After understanding their motivations, we can then brainstorm how to increase these collaboration and engagements between DAOs.
---
## User Personas: Younger DAOs play in single-player, while older DAOs play in multi-player mode :crystal_ball: If I were to split up all the DAOs without looking at data, the easiest one would be by the maturity of the DAOs - new and existing (mature) DAOs. **For new DAOs that are first summoned, most of them will be looking inwards** because the first priority is to configure their settings, making sure the DAO runs and finetuning the DAO. This puts them in single-player mode with very few incentives to actively reach out and collaborate with other DAOs, hence having a lower participation rate. It's very similar to countries (which are good analogies to DAOs). Let's say a country wants to install a new governance system (i.e. democracy, capitalism or even communism). At the early stage, a lot of work is internal - setting up institutions, enacting laws, hiring administrators and civil service. These work are typically internal as it is what the country needs to get off the ground. **Gradually, the existing and more mature DAOs are likely to be more external-facing**, interacting and collaborating with the DAO community on Discord. These groups are also more aware of the ins and outs of the DAOHaus tools and ecosystems, such that they are ready to see problems, discuss and suggst improvements. As such, when we look at the spectrum of DAOs and how to increase their participation in UberHaus, we should treat DAOs as cohorts where they have to cross some chasm before they start going multi-player and participating in UberHaus. **For those DAOs still in single-player mode, they are primarily under the purview of DAOHaus' tools and community.** DAOHaus should help DAOs to 1. Understand what's a DAO 2. Understand how to set up a DAO 3. Set up their DAO. Gradually, this should help them **cross the chasm and start looking towards collaborations with other parts of the community**. For those DAOs in multi-player mode, they will still rely on DAOHaus' tools and ecosystem for their single-player needs, but also **UberHaus as a platform for multi-player discussion, decision-making and collaboration**.
---
## How to increase multi-player participation between DAOs :globe_with_meridians: ### 1. Summon more DAOs to increase organic growth :chart_with_upwards_trend: With the above analysis, if there are more new DAOs as well as maturing DAOs, there will be more DAOs looking to participate, collaborate and govern this DAO for ecosystem. Hence, if we'd like to increase this, our **key metric would be to increase the number of new DAOs summoned, as well as number of DAOs crossing a certain threshold or milestone**. All DAOHaus initiatves should focus on that, such as an intentional content strategy, better onboarding, more user-friendly product UX. Once these are started and synergised, more DAOs will cross the chasm and organic growth in DAO participation should follow. ### 2. Reduce UberHaus participatory friction to increase organic growth :fast_forward: As the DAO community matures, along with DAOHaus organic growth efforts above, more DAOs should see issues they want to discuss and work on, organically increasing the engagements of the DAOs. **Naturally, there will be drop-offs due to participatory friction.** Here, the initiatives should be more under the purview of UberHaus. We should study the different steps required for a DAO to participate in UberHaus and see whether there are ways we can lower it. Ultimately, this might result in the form of more effective outreach about UberHaus, lower friction in joining and participating in UberHaus (could be tokens, the web UX, Discord bots, etc.) ### 3. Create new reasons or uncover latent reasons to collaborate :rocket: Doing the above would slowly but surely increase the participation of DAOs in UberHaus. After all, coupling lowering friction, growing the target addressable market and organic growth will always lead to greater numbers. The question is just how long would it take? **Alternatively, what if we could increase the intrinsic intention and desire to participate for DAOs, which might lead to a faster & greater increase in participation**? Instead of being "chased" to participate, what if we could tap on the more intrinsic and latent reasons where DAOs would want to go multi-player? To further dive into this idea, I would use the analogies of countries and international organisations. Countries are just like DAOs, and international organisations such as United Nations, World Health Organisation are just like DAO hubs (e.g. UberHaus). In a meta way, these international organisations are also DAOs themselves. **So why do countries want to go multi-player?** Countries collaborate with each other via organisations, as well as bilaterally. **They collaborate with each other because it gives them benefits!** | | Benefit | Example | Category | | --- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------- | | 1 | Seek economic help through knowledge transfer or investments | US, Japan & China's investments in emerging economies during their various booms | Economic (investment) | | 2 | Seek trade to sell things they are good at making, and buy things they aren't good at making | World Trade Organisation, Free Trade Agreements, Exclusive Economic Zones | Economic (commerce) | | 3 | Solve a common problem that requires collective actions | World Health Organisation, IATA, Copenhagen | Public goods (security, environment, etc. ) | | 4 | Preserve peace and harmony in a region | Sporting events, cultural exchanges between countries | Social, Cultural | | 5 | Create defence and deterrence | Defence agreements; 5 Eyes | Defence | From the above, if we were to take off our lens of "countries" and switch them back to "DAOs", why would DAOs want to collaborate? | | Benefit (lifted from countries) | Use Case in DAOs | Category | Who benefits? | | --- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------- | | 1 | Seek economic help through knowledge transfer or investments | Investment syndications | Economic (investment) | Investment DAOs, new projects, | | 2 | Seek trade to sell things they are good at making, and buy things they aren't good at making | Product & services marketplaces | Economic (commerce) | Creators, builders, market-maker DAOs | | 3 | Solve a common problem that requires collective actions | Cross-project collaborations to create new standards, products, etc. | Public goods (security, environment, etc.) | All DAOs | | 4 | Preserve peace and harmony in a region | Hackathons, gaming competitions, showcases | Social, Cultural | All DAOs | | 5 | Create defence and deterrence | Not sure yet | Defence | Not sure yet | **If we can observe and forecast why it is better for DAOs to go multi-player instead of remain single-player, we can start initiatives to better facilitate these collaboration**s. This should naturally attract more engagement and participation between DAOs, as it is solving an actual need for DAOs instead of an administrative duty. **For each use case, we should bettter understand what's stopping them from going multi-player, and then build solutions, community and process around it**. Regardless whether it's a investment syndication module, products and services marketplace, or even a gaming competition bot, I believe that when the use case is clear, the community will be open and excited to collaborate. **Like the changing needs of countries and geopolitics, the needs of DAOs to collaborate will keep changing as well**. As long as we can keep that in mind, prioritise which needs are most relevant, and build tools, community and process for DAOs to collaborate well, UberHaus should have longevity in attracting DAO participation.
---
# Summary :telescope: In summary, we can increase the participation of DAOs in UberHaus by **increasing the number of new and maturing DAOs via DAOHaus, as well as reducing the participatory friction in UberHaus**. However, more importantly, if we want to be more forward looking & do a 10x increase in DAO participation, we should start looking towards **discovering more latent reasons why DAOs want to go multi-player, but are not doing so yet**. These reasons will be strong pillars in having organic and self-sustainable DAO participation in UberHaus. Perhaps, further studies with in-depth research and data can be done to analyse the above 3 points.
---
# Appendix
