# Deferring studies at University of Nairobi (UoN)
Most processes in the University of Nairobi are not documented adequately. I have undergone some of them in the past, and I thought it would be great to share my experiences.
Before you proceed, consider whether it is necessary to defer your studies. Consider the following:
* If you are planning to defer because you need to undertake another task, is it possible to tweak your time in order to fit in school and the task at hand?
* A year (or longer) later, will you be proud of your accomplishments within that period?
* Are you willing to hang out with a new set of friends?
The deferment process is relatively less convoluted (as compared to other tasks). As an undergraduate student, you are require to write a deferment letter to the Academic Registrar through the Chairperson of your Department.
Here's a sample (which you should not copy verbatim!):
```
The Academic Registrar, University of Nairobi, P.O. Box 30197-00100, Nairobi.
Thru,
The Director, School of Computing and Informatics.
Dear Sir,
Re: Request to defer studies.
I am writing this letter to request to defer my studies for a year.
I am currently undertaking personal projects which are taking a toll on my academic performance.
Yours faithfully,
Joe Budden.
```
You should then print and deliver this letter to your department for approval. Depending on the specific school, the letter will be forwarded to the office of the Academic Registrar. Alternatively, once your request is approved and stamped, you may have to pick it then deliver it yourself to the office of the Academic Registrar. Afterwards, you should go to the office of the Academic Registrar to confirm that the request was approved. 9 out of 10 times, it is.
In my experience, the whole process takes less than 3 days.
## Readmission
Once you are ready to resume studies. You repeat the same process, only that you will be applying for readmission this time round.
Check out this sample letter:
```
P.O. Box 3500−00200, Nairobi.
17th September, 2017.
The Academic Registrar,
Thru,
The Director, School of Computing and Informatics.
Dear Sir/Madam,
Re: Application for Re-admission
I am writing to be re-admitted into the School of Computing and Informatics after a one-year deferment period.
Over my year-long break, I was able to complete some important projects.
Your faithfully,
Joe Budden.
```
If I remember correctly, your department may require you to avail the (signed and stamped) letter wherein your deferrement was approved.
