# Presentation re Datopian Culture ## Communication in a remote and flat company - Commitment to communicate effectively - Commitment to proactively communicate especially about things especially things that are not working as well as we would like This is key in all teams and all organizations and it is especially important for us as we are: a) remote b) relatively flat (self-managing, autonomous). --- ## Getting in sync / getting complete We often avoid getting in sync, especially when we think there may be a disagreement on something important – when, in fact, it is most important. * Recognize that conflicts are essential for great relationships * Know how to get in sync and disagree well * If it is your meeting to run, manage the conversation. --- ## (Constructive) Disagreement is Welcome We strive for an environment where disagreement can be handled powerfully and constructively rather than being a source of fear and distrust. --- ## Don’t (Intentionally) Cause Upsets, Withhold or Gossip We do not intentionally cause upsets, withhold communications or gossip. * **Be friendly and patient.** * **Be welcoming** * **Be considerate** * **Be respectful** * **Be careful in the words that we choose** * **Try to understand why we disagree** --- ## Principles for Effective Feedback 1. Feedback should be offered with a willingness to listen in return. Those giving feedback should also ask for it. 2. Feedback should be a way for both parties to work together to find solutions, rather than one party pointing out problems. 3. Feedback should be as specific as possible and contain concrete suggestions on how to improve. 4. Feedback should be delivered one on one, rather than in front of others (unless there is prior consent). 5. Feedback should never be framed as criticism. It should start with positive acknowledgements of what the person receiving feedback has done well, and an assumption the person is doing the best they can and that they may face problems out of their control you are not aware of. 6. Feedback should never be delivered in a way that feels personal. It should focus on activities and roles, not people's characters. 7. Feedback should always be followed up, to check on and offer support around its implementation. 8. Feedback should follow shared ground rules for how it is carried out. ---
