## On the relation between science and religion  :zap: :microscope: <!-- Put the link to this slide here so people can follow --> by **Amelia** slides: https://s.id/scireg-a a slightly messier outline: https://s.id/whatamess --- <iframe src="https://giphy.com/embed/Y4pAM9NIxOvsvloSiY" width="480" height="270" frameBorder="0" class="giphy-embed" allowFullScreen></iframe> ***please note*** that these ideas are pretty raw and need more mork before it's executable. --- ### Where are all these begin? :one: <div style="text-align: left"> * The ***"antagonism narrative"*** between science and religion is more pervasive in many previous literature, and.. * ..provoking academic, philosophical, and ethical discussions for decades. </div> --- ### Where are all these begin? :one: <div style="text-align: left"> * The tense seems to be increasing esp. for "controversial issues" such as.. - Evolution vs Creationism - Anthropogenic climate change - Vaccinations and alternative medicine (in some countries, unfortunately:cry:) </div> --- ## Why researching this would add any value? :mortar_board: <div style="text-align: left"> * **==Trust building==** vs deficit model * Incompatibility narratives would impede trust building between scientific and religious communities. </div> --- ### What have we known so far? :book: <div style="text-align: left"> * Perceived incompatibility is more likely a product of intuitive thinking. - Increasing the importance of one [would decrease](https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0022103108001212) perceived value of the other. * It is "***a tale of two extremes***" - Majority of lay :us: [did not hold a view](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23045885/) that science and religion are in conflict. - [Those who did](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23045885/) were ***the least religious*** (and favouring science) or ***the most religious*** (in favour of religion). </div> --- ### What have we known so far? :book: <div style="text-align: left"> * Not only lay public, compatibility attitude was also common among ***academic scientists*** (in the :us:). - Again, those [who adopted the incompatibility](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1468-5906.2009.01447.x) view were ***the least religious*** or ***had a religious upbringing***. </div> --- ### What have we known so far? :book: <div style="text-align: left"> * Students in the Middle East who spent ***more weeks abroad in the West*** would be more likely to [hold a stronger conflict belief](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0963662519869815?journalCode=pusa) than those who did not. - Does this also mean that perceived compatibility is related to embracing certain values (e.g. secularism, conservatism)? </div> --- ## Pondering some of these.. :eyes: <div style="text-align: left"> * No one (yet) actually build a model to map out the relationship between "***perceived compatibility***" with ***religiosity***. - Two previous works are purely descriptive and used a rather biased sample (the most religious are often left out). </div> --- ## Now, the ideas.. :bulb: <div style="text-align: left"> * Since those who ***the least*** and ***the most religious*** hold apparently stronger incompatibility belief.. * ***My hypothesis*** is.. the relationship would be [curvilinear (quadratic)](http://faculty.cas.usf.edu/mbrannick/regression/curvilinear.html). </div> --- ## Pondering some of these.. :eyes: <div style="text-align: left"> * [Differing cognitive profiles](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/acp.3836) (between the two extremes) only explained a little why they endorse incompatibility narratives.. * ..so that the disagreements might be rooted in moral conflict, because the conflict is a matter of: :one: Which institutions and who is going to ***set meanings and does gain more influence*** in the society? Scientists or clerics? </div> --- ## Pondering some of these.. :eyes: <div style="text-align: left"> :two: What about the ***implicit moral teachings*** of some scientific claims? (e.g. does evolution theories aim to invalidate the existence of the Supreme Being?) :three: Also, is it ***moral*** to use technology or materials that violates or prohibited by religious laws to perform research? (e.g. using swine materials to produce vaccines) </div> --- ## Now, the ideas.. :bulb: <div style="text-align: left"> * Some of us think that **relying on logic and scientific evidence** is a moral virtue ([moralised rationality](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0166332)).. * ..while the others believe that **believing in a certain religion** is necessary and also the crucial source of morality [(moralising religiosity](https://psyarxiv.com/5a2db/)). * ==Both might impact== one's perception about the incompatibility between science and religion, so... </div> --- ## Now, the ideas.. :bulb: <div style="text-align: left"> * ***My hypothesis*** is that.. those who are likely to moralise religion ==***or***== moralise rationality would have ==stronger support== for the incompatibility, but.. * Those who endorse ==***both***== moralising religiosity ***and*** rationality would be ==less likely== to agree with the conflict narratives. - Moralising ***both*** religiosity ***and*** rationality allows individuals to retain two seemingly diverging opinions. </div> --- ## How will these ideas be executed? :walking: <div style="text-align: left"> * Cross-national surveys - Recruiting participants through any possible platforms, such as [subreddit](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/00986283211020739) ([r/SampleSize](https://www.reddit.com/r/SampleSize/) or countries subreddit) * More details might take time to set up... </div> --- <div style="text-align: left"> At last, looking forward to hearing what you think about this idea. And.. </div> ### Terima kasih! :tada:  :smile_cat: <div style="text-align: left"> ..for listening to this presentation and your (upcoming) feedback! </div>
