--- tags: stat230, stat340, learning-targets --- # Instructions for alternative Learning Target assessments "Completing" a Learning Target requires successful demonstration of understanding on that Learning Target. The primary way to demonstrate skill is to complete a problem for the target on a Learning Target Quiz. But it's not the only way! **You can also demonstrate this understanding through an oral quiz.** This document gives instructions on how these alternative methods work. ## Demonstrating skill through an oral quiz In this method, you'll do the following: - Schedule a 15-minute slot during appointment hours and indicate **one** Learning Target that you'd like to be quizzed on. - I will make up a new problem for that Learning Target, similar to one found on a regular quiz. - Then you simply drop in to drop-in hours at the time you selected. I will give you the problem to work, and you'll work it out "live" while I listen and observe. You can talk through your work, or work in silence, and use either paper or the board. - When done, I'll give you feedback on your work. Here are the instructions for how to set up an oral quiz: 1. Click this link to go to the section of my Calendly page for setting up oral quizzes: https://calendly.com/aloy-meetings 2. Choose a date from the calendar, then choose a time slot. Time slots are 15 minutes long. 3. When you confirm the appointment, you will be asked to select **one** Learning Target. 4. You'll receive a confirmation email. :::warning **Important rules for oral quizzes:** 1. You may only schedule **one oral quiz per week**. 2. **You must spend one token** to schedule an oral quiz (This is only for Stat 230). 3. Oral quizzes **are by appointment only**. Oral quizzes at other times are not available. 4. You can schedule oral quizzes **up to 10 calendar days in advance**; but **you cannot schedule a quiz within 6 hours of the start time**. (For example, if you want to take an oral quiz at 3:00pm, you must schedule it by 9:00am that day.) 5. Only **one Learning Target per visit** is allowed. 6. Appointment slots for oral quizzes start and end at the times indicated on Calendly --- **time extensions will not be granted, and if you are late to arrive, you will not be given extra time**. 7. **If you schedule an oral quiz and miss the appointment, it will count as your quiz for th week**. If you miss more than one appointment, you may be disallowed from scheduling oral quizzes for the remainder of the course. ::: <!-- ## Demonstrating skill through a video In this method, you'll request a Learning Target problem by email, and I will send you a new instance of a problem for that Learning Target. Then you'll give a presentation of your solution while being recorded on video. The video will go on [Flipgrid](https://info.flipgrid.com/), a video authoring and hosting service, and then I'll give you feedback. uate your work and give you feedback. Here are instructions for how to set up a video quiz: - First, download and install the [Flipgrid](https://info.flipgrid.com/) app on your devices. (This step is optional strictly speaking, but highly recommended as it makes the rest of the process a lot easier.) Link: https://info.flipgrid.com/ - Email me with **one** Learning Target you wish to attempt. I will reply with a new instance of a problem on that Learning Target. - Once you receive the reply with the problem, work out the solution in your notes. You will eventually present this solution on video. - Then, find a whiteboard or a chalkboard, and record yourself (or have a friend record you) while you present your solution, as if you were showing it to the rest of the class. - Then, once your video meets the technical standards (see below), upload your video to Flipgrid **using this link**: https://flipgrid.com/5f03a2d1 - You'll then get feedback on the video itself, so check back. Whiteboards are available almost everywhere on campus, but if you are having difficulty finding one (or if you are working off campus), please let me know. If you have a touchscreen computer or tablet with a stylus and note-taking software, you can use this as well instead of a whiteboard (but you'll need to record your face and voice simultaneously; see below). The Flipgrid app allows you to record the video directly to the Flipgrid website (this is why I said having the app makes the process easier). You can also open the Flipgrid website on a laptop or tablet, then record directly to the website using your webcam. However you can record video using whatever method you want, then save the video as a file and then upload the file to Flipgrid. :::warning **Important rules for video quizzes:** - Only **one Learning Target at a time** can be done in a video quiz. - You may submit **no more than two videos per week**. - Once you select a Learning Target for a video, **you must complete the video for that Learning Target before you are allowed to select another Learning Target.** That is, you cannot have more than one uncompleted video pending at a time. If you select a Learning Target and then decide you don't want to do it anymore, you can email me to let me know. - Videos can be **no longer than 5 minutes in length**. You may need to practice your presentation to get it under that length. You may not submit a "part 2" of a video if you go over time. - **Your handwriting must be legible and the audio must be clear**. If I cannot read what you're writing or understand what you're saying, you may be asked to redo the video. - **Your voice, handwriting, and face/body must remain in the video frame at all times.** For example, you may not talk into a camera while the handwriting is shown separately; and as mentioned you may not simply narrate over a completed solution. - **Your video solution must show all important steps in the problem from start to finish** just like on a regular quiz problem. However, if you choose, you can write out the entire solution before hitting the record button, then explain what you did. (This is a good way to keep videos under 5 minutes long.) Finally, note two important deadlines: - **Sunday, June 12** is the last day to request a video Learning Target problem. No requests after this point may be made. - **Sunday, June 19** is the last day to submit video Learning Target solutions. No videos submitted after this point will be accepted. ::: Here is a Flipgrid tutorial if you need it: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_HglmZnL7jQ" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> **Tips for making good videos:** A masterful production is not necessary here --- you can make these videos with just your smartphone (or a friend's smartphone). But do take steps to make sure the quality is good: * *Work out your solution completely on paper before recording*. This way you'll have notes to work from, which makes things go more smoothly. * *Practice first before recording*. Don't *just* work the solution out on paper but actually rehearse your presentation using the same tools you'll use when you make the video. This includes practicing with the video tools. * *Do a check of the video and audio* to make sure that your handwriting is clear and the audio is legible --- *before* recording the main video. * *Write a little larger, and speak a little more slowly, than you normally would.* This will help ensure you're coming through clearly. * *Be mindful of the time limit.* Flipgrid will not accept videos longer than 5 minutes. So, again, practice; and if you find you're taking longer than 5 minutes in practice, think about how you could present more clearly or efficiently, and whether your solution itself could be done more briefly. -->
