# Navigating the bureaucracy after birth in Germany > The document was last updated on 06/01/2025 The document contains information on how I navigated the bureaucracy in Germany as an Indian parent. ## Birth Certificate Once the kid is born, the hospital communicates the details of the kid to the local registration office (*Standesamt*). One can then apply for birth certificate using the official website. For example in Munich it is; https://stadt.muenchen.de/service/info/geburtsurkunde-neugeborene/1063604/n0/ > The application needs to be made through the official portal of the stadt in which the kid was born. For example, if you live in Fürstenfeldbruck but kid was born in a hospital in Munich, the request must be sent to Munich office. During the process, the office shall ask for additional documents such as; - [ ] Marriage certificate (Translated to German) - [ ] Passports of both parents. - [ ] Visa/Residency documents of both parents. If all goes well the birth certificate(s) shall be delivered to home via post in 2 weeks. > Naming a kid is a highly debated and controversial topic in Germany. There are numorous threads in public forums covering this topic. The important thing being the name has to be decided before the birth since the hospital needs the same for all documentation purposes. ## Getting Indian Passport ### Register the child as an Indian Citizen: The process for CGI Munich is documented here : https://cgimunich.gov.in/pages/MjQ1 In general, the documents required are the following. - [ ] Copy of the online form submitted to https://indiancitizenshiponline.nic.in/ - [ ] Copy of birth certificate (multilingual) of the kid - [ ] Copy of passport(front and last page) of both parents - [ ] Copy of Visa/Residency documents of both parents - [ ] Copy of Marriage certificate - [ ] Proof of payment (bank transfer) The above documents depending on the consulate needs to be send via post. > To receive the Indian birth registration certificate via post instead of collecting it in person, you can buy a C5 envelope from supermarket or local courier and then paste the shipping label generated from deutsche post [website](https://shop.deutschepost.de/internetmarke/internetmarke-national/brief-postkarte-national).
