The Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) held a 2024 men's foreign player try-out draft in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at 3 p.m. on the 11th.
The deadline for renewal was 6 p.m. on the 10th. While KB Insurance announced its renewal of its contract with Villena, Leo and Yosvani, who ranked first and second in score, failed to renew their contracts with OK Financial Group and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, respectively.
That's why the draft attracted more attention. Leo and Yosvani's destination drew attention.
Nominations were granted based on the previous season's performance. KB Insurance, ranked seventh out of a total of 140 marbles, started with 35 yellow marbles, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, ranked sixth with 30 red marbles, KEPCO, ranked fifth with 25 pink marbles, Hyundai Capital, ranked fourth with 20 sky blue, Woori Card, ranked third with 15 white, OK Financial Group, ranked second with 10 green beads, and Korean Air, which won its fourth consecutive gold medal, started with five orange beads.
The first bead that came out of the drawing machine was orange. It was an unusual situation from the beginning. The winning team, Korean Air, received the first nomination. Coach Tommy Tilikainen nominated Yosvani.
Yosvani and Korean Air already have ties. They led Korean Air to win the 2020-2021 season. After four seasons, they will be wearing Korean Air uniforms again.
MVP Leo was named second. Hyundai Capital made the choice. Leo will be the third team to join the V-League after Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and OK Financial Group. With this, Hyundai Capital has the strongest "triangular formation" led by Leo, Heo Soo-bong, and Jeon Kwang-in.
KB, the third-ranked team, renewed its contract with Villena, and KEPCO chose Luiz Elian Estrada from Cuba. Lewis, who can play both outside heater and apogit speaker, is Cuba's Shin Seong, who was born in 2000, dreaming of becoming the next Leo. Lewis, who boasts dynamic jumping and high RBI in offense, was praised for his exceptional ability in offense.
Ranked fifth, Woori Card named Michael Ahi from the Netherlands. His height was disappointing, but he caught the eye with his flexible jump and energetic spike. He is a resource that can handle outside heaters. He also received high marks for his active attitude in testing.
Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, which was pushed to the sixth place even after receiving the second-highest number of 30 balls, asked for time and struggled hard. Coach Kim Sang-woo chose Mattei Kok (Slovenia), who played for Woori Card last season, after much consideration.
The last seventh-ranked OK Financial Group coach, Ogiino Masah, nominated Italian apogit spiker Manuel Luconi.
Villena, Leo, and Yosvani, who renewed their contracts, will receive 550,000 dollars (about 750 million won) side by side, including taxes, and the annual salary of new players in their first year is 400,000 dollars (about 550 million won).
