--- title: Virtual Coworking description: Fun fact, every WeWork location is first completely laser scanned as part of the process. What if those scans can be further useful in extending the benefits of co-working to an online metaverse? image: https://xrdevlog.com/img/starfish.jpg robots: index, follow lang: en dir: ltr breaks: true disqus: xrdevlog --- # Virtual Coworking {%hackmd theme-dark %} Exploring what the future of co-working may look like with a 3D scan of one from the heart of Mission district in San Francisco. This group provides spaces for the decentralized web community to collaborate with workspaces and 20+ community events monthly. ![A speaker giving a presentation at Starfish Mission](https://i.imgur.com/LlOJQTL.jpg) The technology is here today and has many use cases such as being able to broadcast talks to a global audience and collaborate in a fully interactive environment accessible on every platform and device. <iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/312827390?byline=0&portrait=0" width="100%" height="400" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; fullscreen" allowfullscreen></iframe> ## Features - **Presentation** ![](https://i.gyazo.com/dba859c6315cd5f81b0fc1c41cfc189b.gif =100%x) <p align="center"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zcWHamr5m_k" width="100%" height="400" frameborder="0"></iframe></p> - **Social** - **[Whiteboard](https://awwapp.com/)** ![](https://i.gyazo.com/914c561de8711d218a4bf52ba5d5725f.gif =100%x) - **[Notes](https://pad.deskcloud.io/p/randomnotes)** ![](https://i.gyazo.com/4451658b285fce8215bff479efa9a700.gif =100%x) - **[Desktop](deskcloud.html)** ![](https://i.gyazo.com/b58e9e7c48d4ee8ce18bd80e3d34c7c6.gif =100%x) - **Brainstorm** - <https://hubs.mozilla.com/5oC6R39/obedient-defiant-get-together> - **Sandbox** - <https://www.vrchat.net/home/launch?worldId=wrld_aea5c1d3-7abc-4287-acf8-200279c12700&instanceId=95012~hidden(usr_4a275d3c-b09d-493f-a315-d28db0a19c50)~nonce(729316e4-3f72-4cf1-8936-c17e3c52de95)> ## Process Before Starfish, the space was dedicated to VR/AR startups which is how I was able to acquire the scan. However, it appeared to be in really bad shape when I got it. ![Matterport scan with people artifacts fused inside](https://i.imgur.com/gjk0KFF.jpg) This is why preparation is necessary to have a clear, clean space before scanning. Regardless, extensive cleanup was done in blender to get the model to a more acceptable place to begin working with. ![](https://i.imgur.com/kEtQjCu.gif =100%x) Here is how the model looked in janus with a few lights and a skybox, which takes a few steps from a template and has less than 16 lines of code total. ![View of the coworking space in janus](https://i.imgur.com/9ZfXJek.jpg) *** The mirror world doesn't have to completely match the real world, but it would be useful if it stayed the same relative dimensions and collision map so that users in mixed reality can still mostly interact with physical and virtual reality players. ![Front lobby area of uploadvr office](https://i.imgur.com/x8B1vLV.jpg) ![Ingame view of the digital space](https://i.imgur.com/DXssbef.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/eQASeoY.jpg) ![](https://i.imgur.com/F5b9Oi0.jpg) #### Notes - <https://www.wework.com/blog/posts/using-lasers-to-capture-the-tiniest-details-of-a-workspace>
