# WikiHackathon
## Proposed date:
- Tuesday 13 October 2022
## Idea:
Wikipedia is one of the most amazing things that's come out of the internet, but it has a huge bias problem (Who writes wikipedia article [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Who_writes_Wikipedia%3F#:~:text=28%25%20of%20editors%20are%20aged%2040%2B.&text=59%25%20of%20the%20editors%20are%20aged%2017%20to%2040.&text=The%20English%20Wikipedia%20currently%20has,contributors%20participate%20in%20community%20discussions.)).
One statistic which stands out is that only ~15% of all edits being from women.
The Turing is in a fantastic position where we have so many experts from a wide variety of topics. It would be really fun if we could organise an effort to help leverage this knowledge towards improving wikipedia (with an EDI focus in mind).
## Plan:
- Everyone and anyone can get involved!
- Have a few people who are experienced with contributing to wikipedia to help out
- Have simple getting started instructions:
- How to make a wikipedia account
- How to make a simple edit
- Use an "opendoor" setup
- Keep things casual and let people come in and leave whenever they want
- Very conversational atmosphere
- Make it clear there's no requirement to join
- We could make a few suggestions for getting started of where to update things:
- This could have some additions to link to the institute for example
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing_Institute
- This is quite out of date
- Could have some great links to our current teams/projects
- More to add..
- Could collect suggestions when advertising!
- Have ample supply of biscuits to entice people to come in and chat
## Tasks
We'd focus on finding, correcting and adding:
- Missing / lacking articles
- Outdated references
- Retracted / proven incorrect references
- Biased / conjecture information
- Adding references diverse (e.g. some pages have like 10 references all from the same author)
- Fix outdated phrasing / insensitive language
- Make efforts to highlight lesser known - but just as important - researchers/groups
- Reword verbose pages to be more approachable
- Adjust language to be more inclusive
## Monitoring of contributions
It would be great to record pages being changed. Would be able to do some fun analytics on / try to measure the amount of impact we can make in a short timeframe.
