# Podcast /w Sarah Sharples
## Introduction
- Hi everyone and welcome to another episode of the Turing podcast
- I'm your host today, Aoife, and I'm joined by Torti
- say hi
- and I'm so happy to welcome our guest today
- Prof. Sarah Sharples
- Before we get into things, Sarah, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background
- ...
- ... and you recently gave a Turing Lecture about your work, for any listeners unfamilar, the Turing lectures are the Institute's flagship event series; this year, they are organised in partnership with the Royal institute of Great Britian with the goal of making AI and data science research accessible to everyone!
- How did that go?
## Questions to ask from online transcripts (27 Sep 2022)
- Question 2- 07:26:11 PM - Anthony
- What work is being done on the legal implications for self-driving vehicles? Who is responsible if an accident occurs?
- Question 3- 08:07:54 PM - Perdita Stevens
- if the driver must stay alert and responsible, what is the point of the autonomous vehicle?
- Question 10 -08:05:13 PM Matt Hervey, Head of AI Law, Gowling WLG
- Do you think we may need to jump level 3 and go straight to levels 4/5"
- [name=Aoife] what are the levels?
- Level 0 (No Driving Automation)
- Level 1 (Driver Assistance)
- Level 2 (Partial Driving Automation)
- Level 3 (Conditional Driving Automation)
- Level 4 (High Driving Automation)
- Level 5 (Full Driving Automation)
- Question 10- 08:07:02 PM - Simon
- "how do you address hacking, viruses, hardware trojans, etc?
- Question 19- 08:14:21 PM - Ahmad
- What about when there's a medical emergency? Will we code cars to allow ambulances through?
- Question 22- 08:17:35 PM - Simon
- "Will AV's be remotely commanded when there is a danger ahead, such as a vehicle fire, flood or other hazards?"
### Feedback form questions
- Question 3 -What strategic partnerships need to happen to broaden inclusion?
### General questions:
- [name=Aoife] Do you think we could reach a tipping point, where say cost for using a self-driving car is lower than a human operated one e.g., if insurance begins to favour self-driving
- [name=Aoife] Self-driving cars will rely on a whole assortment of data streams, with things like GDPR people are now more aware and more protective of their data than ever. Is it a consideration that people may opt out of giving their data or else may request it be removed - if so will this upset the AI/ML systems in place?
- [name=Aoife] Do you think there's been a bit less excitement about self-driving vehicles now that a lot of people have discovered that they can work from home?
- [name=Aoife] There's been some amazing scientific breakthroughs in the past, for example vaccines, which have been marred by some unfortunate views and press. Have you considered ways of getting ahead of the inevitable bad press and keeping the narritive based in facts?
- [name=Tort] How do AV fit in with future sustainability plans, should we instead be focusing on better public transport networks?
### Misc questions (somewhat silly or less important)
- [name=Aoife] Could there be the possiblity that this becomes an equality issue, where it is safer to use self-driving cars, but very few will be able to afford it.
- [name=Aoife] Cars built before 1965 (legal in 1983 to all wear) and which do not have seatbelts, have no legal requirement to have them fitted. Do you foresee this being an equally long and potentially difficult transition from human-self driving?
- Maybe WRT "Connected & automated Mobility 2025"
- [name=Aoife] There seems to be a huge effort around the world, both in public and private sectors working on this, how do we prevent "reinventing the wheel"?
- [name=Aoife] ~~There have been infamous examples of AI being attacked and trained to do horrible things e.g., chatbots learning from users have been trained to say unacceptable things to others. How would the law handle if say a group of people found a way to introduce negative features?~~
- (I do quite like this one) 07:59:56 PM – Oliver Marriage- When do you think we'll be able to fall asleep while driving?"
## Outro
- I'd just like to thank again Torti for hosting with me today
