# Identifying Zones - Elena It is important to maximize your energy. You perform best when you are doing things that energize you. ## Zone of Incompetence The things that other people probably do better than you (ie- fix your car), and therefore you should outsource if they don’t give you joy. want to bump all of these up: 1. Salestalk (convincing people) 2. Coding (I only have little knowledge still) 3. On-the-spot ideas/suggestions -- wala talaga akong maisip agad agad! 4. Marketing (no experience yet) ## Zone of Competence The things that you do just fine, but others are as good as you (ie- clean your bathroom) and therefore you should outsource if they don’t give you joy. 1. Doing repetitive tasks (marking submissions) - def does not give joy +1 Gladys from Karen: * Technical (github, coding, etc) from Pat: * Research (being resourceful) * General project coordination ## Zone of Excellence The things that you are excellent at (ie- better than others), but don’t love doing. This is the danger zone. Many people will want you to keep doing these things (as they gain significant value from you doing them), but this is the area that you should also look to move away from. This is the hard one! Honestly can't think of anything that I do excellently but hate doing right now. from Karen: * tahi-tahi ng mga tao (?). you're able to solve and be the mediator, but naiinis ka kapag sobrang obvious na haha from Gladys: * troubleshooting * Elena: gives joy from Daphne: * excellent communicator, but appears sleepy so it seems like she's not as interested from Pat: * **Reporting and data analysis** * There's a difference between not hating vs don't love doing. I know you don't hate this, but I'm not sure if you actually love doing this. * I notice that you have the skill of establishing trends, and brainstorming how data can be presented in a more visual way. * My hunch is that you've developed this skill from years of reporting (probably from school and previous work experience). It's a skill that I see improving task after task. ## Zone of Genius The things that you are uniquely good at in the world, and that you love to do (so much so, that time and space likely disappear when you do them). This is where you can add most value to the world and yourself. This is where you should be driving toward spending most, if not all, of your time. 1. Design (spreadsheets, campaign, reports, interiors) 2. Learning new stuff via (reading, watching videos, listening to podcasts and asking people :D ) 3. Customer Service Some people worry that if each of us operates solely in our Zone of Genius that no one will be available to do the un-fun stuff. This is a false fear. There are many personality types. For every activity that feels un-fun to you, there is someone out there who not only excels at it, but loves it. (Yes, even the “horrible” tasks, like firing people.) The key in any organization is for people to be transparent about what their Zone of Genius is, and then map all activities to the right people. from Gladys: * preparing detailed reports * making and fixing reports and everything from Karen: * spreadsheets * reporting from Daphne: * spreadsheets * data presentation and reporting * quick-thinker for conversations from Pat: * **Creative tasks / arts** * I think you enjoy doing the little things where your creative juices can flow. * **Problem solving (Reactive + Empathy)** * You're able to innately be resourceful and think through most of the issues you encounter with the intent of resolving them independently. * **Tool creation (Proactive)** * You're able to pull in your learnings and apply them by integrating features that solve painpoints. * I personally think that given the right tools and exposure, you would be able to create intricate and aestheticallys beautiful processes. ## Zone I want to Bump-up Id like my zone of incompetence to bump to zone of competence and eventually zone of genius. As a person who loves learning, being able to code like a pro would be a dream come true! :D
