# Electronic Authorization to Enjoy Bulk Game Benefits in Macau

Mainland China will soon begin issuing smart cards to replace paper permits for people traveling between mainland China and Macau, the official Xinhua news agency reported.


Ricardo Siu-Chichen, a gaming and tourism expert at Macau University, and Union Gaming Research Macau, a consulting firm, said the move would help Macau's casino public market.

The Ministry of Public Security plans to test-run the new permit in Guangdong Province. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that authorities began accepting applications for electronic permits today.

Similar to e-passports, users will be able to use existing e-passports to cross the border between Macau and mainland China. The e-passports are expected to improve the efficiency of inspections at checkpoints, Siu said.

The Gongbei Border Gate is the main entry point between Macau and mainland China, and it is the busiest checkpoint in China. 14.2 million people, 48.6 percent of the total visitors to Macau last year, entered the city using the Border Gate checkpoint.

Union Gaming expects the electronic licensing system to gradually expand to other provinces. Research House says the electronic licensing system is "very beneficial" for Macau because it benefits inbound individual tourists who are "much better quality visitors" in terms of total gaming revenue.
