Richard Stallman created the GNU project, because he was frustrated with the proprietary nature of computer systems he worked on (particularly Unix). The GNU project contained open-source rewrites of closed-source software Stallman used. --- ### What is FSF ? In 1985 Stallman founded the Free Software Foundation (FSF), a foundation to support the free software movement. Despite the problematic statements Stallman has made from time to time, he is a true visionary and pioneer of open-source software. The FSF takes a radical stance as it demands total control over software and its code --- #### What are open source licenses ? * Apache License 2.0 * BSD 3-Clause "New" or "Revised" license * BSD 2-Clause "Simplified" or "FreeBSD" license * GNU General Public License (GPL) * GNU Library or "Lesser" General Public License (LGPL) * MIT license --- ### Day to day things we use which are open source. - Linux - Git - Mozilla Firefox - VLC Media Player - Python --- ### Organizations which contribute to open source.  - google - microsoft - redhat - intel - IBM - amazon ### Why do they do it ?
