# Data science for science and humanities fornightly meetings notes ## 2023-04-05 - Existing collaboration with Rothamsted - Looking to continue this work, animal agriculture focus - partners incl Goldman Sachs - Pieter to stay until August - Out-of-budget now on hold - Not much news on AI hubs/AI for net zero - MSF-AI institute, responsible, centre for data driven discovery, workshop, open to all https://sites.google.com/view/rainscmu. Breakout activity on generative methods (generative/discriminator themed competition). Coronation bank holiday ## 2023-03-08 - **PMU**: Lelle will now work across humanities and science programme as programme coordinator - **Sebastian** link to Gabor Csanyi - **AIUK** quite a few will be there, but the meeting will still be in the diary - **Scott** new postdoc (Kristina) starting - **Humanities OOB** Ruth and Pieter remain for 6 more months - **Oliver** next week he's attending a workshop for potential collaboration with the turing (Data61/CSIRO) - **Jon Rowe and Kirstie** potential collaboration regarding zoology (ZSL) - Tom Coates, visiting researcher at Turing soon - potential connections with Scivision ## 2023-02-22 - **New joiners**: Intro by Robert Blackwell, CEFAS, starting a secondment with the Turing and Sara Bernardini will join as well, NOC (wokring on the biodiversity project Turing/CEH/NOC) - **Fundings** Couple of calls from UKRI: - pre-announcement on interdisciplinary research [link here](https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/ukri-cross-research-council-responsive-mode-pilot-scheme/) - Jon Rowe suggests coordination to avoid submit similar things. RA and SA already thinking to submit something; SH in conversation with Alden for IceNet as well. - Another call: **Future Leaders** ([link here](https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/future-leaders-fellowships-round-8/)) for early-career researchers, but very vague definition of it. No need of PhD - **ResearchFish** Put all your UKRI related stuff in it. - **Turing Annual Report** Emphasis on impact, so not only academic impact. Deadline this Friday! - **Book Launch** from Living with machines: https://livingwithmachines.ac.uk/events/ - **Scivision** Successful round of interviews for Scivision, 3 new people joining - **Fellowships** RA: we have some fellowships coming on board as part of Turing fellowships scheme, in the aftermath of LwM - **Turing Recruitment** asks HS to populate a forecast of roles that may come in the future - **Enviromnent and Sustainability** SH is helping with that, he is expecting to grow but doesn't know the size. - **TRIC** Any clarity about funding? ## 2023-02-08 - **Draft Turing Strategy** available on Mathison, they are looking for feedbacks. Lots of focus on grand challenge area, says nothing about connection with Turing structure. Next phase is understanding how programmes will connect to it. Scott leads on environmental sustainability - **Turing Annual Report.** Turing is working on the next annual report. 2/3 things that have impact from the programme. - Things directly from REG activity but relevant to the programme? To discuss between us. - Projects (sciences): - Scivision (collecting things for Research Fish, lots of REG activity) - IceNet - DyME - **Funding opportunities**: - AI Hubs (deadline tomorrow) - Turing can't apply but we could collaborate with them. - Centre for Doctoral Training: Turing can't apply but maybe there will be collaborations (through Training and Skills) - UKRI: fund for interdisciplinary research, it seems very open [link](https://www.ukri.org/opportunity/ukri-cross-research-council-responsive-mode-pilot-scheme/) - ASG: researchfish is open for contribution. - **AHRC Pilot**: send a draft to AHRC by end of this week. Pieter and Ruth leading a proposal for furthering the agenda of A&H working with Data Science. Base for a business case for next year to access UKRI infrastructure fund. - **TRIC** and support for agriculture side. As part of AIUK there will be an official launch - **Future stuff:** Matt / Scott to discuss with Oliver about potential REG involvement in a proposal with Birmingham ## 2023-01-25 - Extension of the A&H project: Subtantial progress, Turing and AHRC meet and there is support for continuing the involvment of turing on A&H. Starting from April 2023, financed by AHRC, at least another year if not 5 years. - Alligment with TPS. - Dave: Think about organising around a mission as asked for the - PMU will update REG on timelines for this new project, it should stay the same as approved proposal. - Alan R Lowe on DS4S: Out of budget proposals approved around Scivision and Molecular biology. Postdocs accepted offers. - Health project: A couple of researchers of the Crick interested in collaborating with the Turing, Alan to broker this collaboration, possible out of budget proposals. To contact May if a REG representation is needed in this meetings. - ## Jan 11th 2023 No meeting. ## November 30th 2022 David Sarmiento Perez: New project manager, he's taking over from Arielle. New postdoc positions in Scivision ### Funding status: - Agricultural project, not sure about how is the founder. - Chris Dent project is going to panel for 2nd or 3rd time this week - Matt Fry, Monitoring diversity project with REG. Another work on terrestrial biodiversity (ecosistem leadership grant, i guess this is a different one? [name=Oliver] yes there are two similar biodiversity projects). Collaboration with NOC - Scott Hosking, Scivision had their first community call (coordinated by RAM) - Aberdeen (abrdn charitable foundation) funding (?) terrestrial biodiversity monitoring <-- working with REG - David Roy, Tom August and OTS co-I, funding approved, starts in March - Still waiting for the outcome of the out of budget (Ruth, Pieter and Andre). Mark G is waiting to understand whether AHRC will give us some money before the Turing will put some money in ### New PostDoc Turing Fellowships [New scheme](https://mathison.turing.ac.uk/Interact/Pages/Content/Document.aspx?id=2680&SearchId=0&utm_source=interact&utm_medium=category_search&utm_term=*), Turing research fellows for current postdocs. 20 positions, with career opportunities after. Placement with research groups with the department or in university netwrok High level description of what areas the postdocs could work on e.g: - biodiversity monitoring - historical archives They apply saying what they are interested in and then there's a match-making process. They will co-create the project. ### Quinquennial Review Turing asked to complete a quinquennial review. How much should our budget be or 1 year renewable. Deadline middle December. The Turing wants to go for 5 years. Jon will share the draft with Research leads and PMU (basically not with us). Overview of what has been done in the last 5 years. Business case for ASG and LwM - he might need some help from research leads. They need to write what are our strategies and objectives for the next 5 years? How do we align with these 4 grand challenge areas? Arts and Humanities should fit towards digital economy or defence? They don't know exactly how to pitch it. EPSRC call for CDT and AI Hubs, AI for engineering and AI for real data. Turing is not allowed to apply for this. Turing is expected to work with succesful ones in some way. AI Hubs: scientific engineering research programmes. Put together some demonstration as part of the new phase of Scivision. https://scivision.org/ ## November 16th 2022 ### Notes Several resubmissions to out of budget (outcome end of the month) TMF: tech emission fund (deadline 31/03/2023) Automated biodiversity monitoring system - J. Rowe mention a compiler that allows you to compile to different hardwares with different specifications (memory, processor, etc). - Moth guy from Oxford? [Alex Rodgers](https://www.cs.ox.ac.uk/people/alex.rogers/) Natural history museum event went very well Royal institute of Great Britain hosting a turing lecture on raising sea level and AI [link](https://www.turing.ac.uk/events/turing-lectures-how-much-can-we-limit-rising-seas) Aida on RAM: - more representation of RAM in Programme meetings - goal to be 10 in April (now 4) - promote adoption of research output - research adiacent or research infrastrcture roles (REG, RAM, Community Managers) - RAM as REG is horizontal - RAM under TPS - promote best practices - community managers make sure the existing project participants all work well together, RAM focuses on external stakeholders and users) RAMs offer different perspectives (positive experience on Scivision). Scope-creep: user engagement vs project management vs community management What is the difference between RAM and REG? - Aida: it depends if you cost time for REG, if not then RAM can work with PDRA To engage with them first a meeting with Aida and Malvika to know if what is needed is community manager or RAM Pieter: meeting with AHRC for what is the future plan and what's coming in our way. Dave will attend the meeting.
